Error 0x8007422 is not listed in Microsoft’s normal Windows error tables, and the only exact-code report associated it with Microsoft Store opening and Microsoft game sign-in. Treat the displayed number as unconfirmed until you copy it directly from the dialog and record your Windows build with winver. Then follow the branch that matches your symptom: reset Microsoft Store for Store or game failures, use the Windows Update troubleshooter for update failures, or collect SetupDiag and setup logs when an upgrade fails.

What error 0x8007422 means

There is no standard Microsoft definition for 0x8007422 in the usual Windows Update, Windows upgrade or common-error reference tables. That absence matters: a single mistyped character can send you toward the wrong repair procedure. Microsoft support guidance generally recommends trying its general fixes before searching for a specific code, and the exact-code Microsoft Q&A discussion asks users to provide their Windows version and build.

The only exact-code report located for 0x8007422 describes Microsoft Store failing to open and sign-in problems in games such as Minecraft. That report is a community question and reply thread, not a formal error-code definition. It does not establish that every appearance of the number has the same cause. If your message appeared during Windows Update or while upgrading Windows, diagnose that workflow separately rather than assuming the Store workaround applies.

The “2020” in some versions of this title is not verified as the year the code was created or documented. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but that date concerns the end of free software updates, technical assistance and security fixes; it does not identify this error or prove that an installation is affected by it.

First, verify the code and your Windows build

Do this before changing services, reinstalling apps or editing system components. Your notes will also make it possible to compare a later log entry with the original message.

  1. Copy the code exactly. Select the dialog text if Windows allows it, or take a screenshot and transcribe every character. Keep the leading 0x, all zeroes and the final digits. Do not substitute a visually similar code from a web search.
  2. Record the Windows identity. Press Windows+R, type winver, and press Enter. Write down the edition, version and OS build shown in the About Windows box. The Q&A discussion for this exact number specifically requests that information.
  3. Record the trigger. Note whether the dialog appeared when opening Microsoft Store, signing in to a Store game, downloading an update, or running Windows Setup. Also note whether the failure affects one account or every account on the PC.
  4. Capture the complete message. A sentence surrounding the number, an application name, or a second result code can be more diagnostic than the hexadecimal value alone.
  5. Restart once and reproduce the same action. A one-time Store or sign-in interruption should not be treated as a persistent error. If the number changes after restarting, keep both messages in your notes.

What fails What is established Start here
Microsoft Store will not open The exact-code report associates 0x8007422 with this symptom. Run wsreset; if needed, re-register Microsoft Store.
Sign-in to Minecraft or another Microsoft Store game The same community report mentions game sign-in, but does not prove a universal game-specific cause. Reset Store, then test the Store and the game again.
Windows Update download or installation 0x8007422 is not a documented standard Windows Update code. Use the Windows Update troubleshooter and check the update service and cache.
Windows feature upgrade or setup Microsoft explains that general 0x800xxxxx results can represent operating-system failures and are not unique to upgrades. Save the displayed result code, inspect setup logs and run SetupDiag.

If more than one row describes your situation, start with the action that produced the message most recently. A Store reset will not explain a setup rollback, and an upgrade log will not repair a Store package by itself.

Fix Microsoft Store and Store-game failures

1. Reset the Store cache with wsreset

  1. Close Microsoft Store and any game showing the sign-in error.
  2. Press Windows+R, enter wsreset, and press Enter.
  3. A blank command window may remain open while the cache is cleared. Do not close it prematurely.
  4. Wait for the command window to close and for Microsoft Store to open again automatically. The first launch can take longer than usual.
  5. Sign in to Store, then retry the game or download that produced the error.

This procedure is the primary Store action suggested in the exact-code Q&A replies. It resets Store cache data; it does not establish what the unlisted hexadecimal code means. If the Store still fails, continue to re-registration rather than repeatedly running the reset.

2. Re-register Microsoft Store from elevated PowerShell

Re-registration is a more advanced change than wsreset. Create a restore point or make a current backup before proceeding, especially on a work-managed computer. The command below is the standard AppX re-registration form referenced by the community replies for this issue.

  1. Open Start and type PowerShell.
  2. Right-click Windows PowerShell or PowerShell and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Paste this single line and press Enter:
    Get-AppxPackage -allusers Microsoft.WindowsStore | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"}
  4. Let PowerShell finish. Red text can indicate a package or account-specific problem; copy the complete message rather than ignoring it.
  5. Restart Windows, open Microsoft Store, sign in, and test the affected game.

If PowerShell reports that the package or manifest cannot be found, stop there and preserve the error text. Do not delete AppX folders manually or download a replacement package from an unofficial site. A missing package, permission problem or damaged Windows installation needs a different diagnosis.

3. Separate Store access from game-account access

After the reset or re-registration, test in this order:

  1. Open Microsoft Store without launching the game.
  2. Confirm that the Store account can sign in and display the Library page.
  3. Open the game and test sign-in.
  4. If Store works but the game alone fails, record the game name, account type and its new message. That result is no longer evidence that Store itself is broken.

This separation prevents an account or game-service failure from being mistaken for a Windows Store package failure. The exact-code report does not provide a universal fix for every game, so retain any new code for the next diagnosis.

Fix a Windows Update failure

Use this branch only when the message appears while checking, downloading or installing Windows updates. Microsoft does not list 0x8007422 as a normal Update reference code, so the useful evidence will be the complete Update result, the build from winver and what the troubleshooter reports.

1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. On Windows 11, open Settings and go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Select Windows Update, choose Run or Run the troubleshooter, and apply the recommended action.
  4. Restart if requested, then check for updates once more.

Record whether the troubleshooter changes the displayed code, identifies a disabled service, or reports that it made no changes. That result determines the next step; do not apply an unrelated cache procedure solely because the hexadecimal number looks familiar.

2. Check the Windows Update service

  1. Press Windows+R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Update in the list.
  3. Open its properties and check the current status and startup setting. Microsoft’s documented remedies include ensuring the service is enabled and restarting it when an applicable Update error calls for that action.
  4. Restart the service only if it is stopped or the troubleshooter instructs you to do so. On a business-managed PC, a policy may intentionally control this service.
  5. Close the Services console, restart Windows, and test Windows Update again.

If the service immediately stops, cannot be started, or is missing, note the exact message. That is a service-configuration problem, not proof that 0x8007422 has a known meaning.

3. Reset the update cache only for an update symptom

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes resetting the Windows Update cache for applicable error conditions. Cache reset procedures stop update-related services, rename or clear their temporary download data, restart the services and then try the update again. Because the exact commands and folders differ by Windows version and policy, use the procedure in Microsoft’s current Windows Update troubleshooting instructions for your edition rather than deleting folders at random.

Do not use an update-cache reset to repair Microsoft Store, a game login or an upgrade rollback. If the update still fails afterward, preserve the new result code and move to logs or support rather than repeating the reset indefinitely.

Diagnose a failed Windows upgrade

If the error appears while Windows Setup is upgrading the operating system, treat the displayed value as a setup result, not as a Store error. Microsoft Learn notes that general 0x800xxxxx results can represent operating-system failures and are not unique to the Windows upgrade process.

1. Record the setup result and rollback point

  • Write down the complete result code, any second code shown after a hyphen, and the percentage or stage where Setup stopped.
  • Note whether Setup rolled back to the previous Windows installation or left the computer in a pending-restart state.
  • Record the edition, version and build from winver after the rollback.

2. Review Windows Setup logs

Microsoft identifies setup logs such as setuperr.log as useful evidence. Search the Setup log locations for entries recorded at the failure time, and copy the surrounding lines rather than only one hexadecimal value. A log may identify a driver, migration action or component result that is more specific than 0x8007422.

3. Run SetupDiag

Microsoft’s SetupDiag tool analyzes Windows Setup logs and reports a matching rule when it can identify the cause. Download it only from Microsoft, run it after the failed upgrade, and save the generated result. If SetupDiag reports a different code, use that documented result as the next troubleshooting target; the original unlisted number may only be a wrapper result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not start another upgrade attempt until you have saved the logs. A second attempt can overwrite useful evidence and make it harder to distinguish a repeatable failure from a one-time interruption.

Checks that apply to every branch

  • Use the same symptom after each change. Test the Store after a Store repair, Windows Update after an Update repair, and Setup only after collecting setup evidence.
  • Keep an intervention log. Write down the date, build, action, restart and resulting message. This prevents repeating a failed step and shows which change altered the behavior.
  • Protect advanced changes. Create a restore point or backup before PowerShell re-registration or other system-level changes. Restore points may be unavailable on some editions or managed devices, so do not assume one exists.
  • Respect managed-device policy. Organization-controlled services, Store access and upgrade policies may override local settings. Contact the administrator with the exact code, build and log excerpt.
  • Do not infer malware from the code. Nothing in the available documentation establishes that 0x8007422 indicates malware, and the code is not a virus diagnosis.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek targeted help

Escalate with evidence when the code remains unlisted after verification, when Store re-registration produces package errors, when Windows Update repeatedly fails after the documented troubleshooter and service checks, or when SetupDiag identifies a separate failure. Provide the exact dialog text, winver output, the affected component, steps already tried and relevant log excerpts. A request that says only “0x8007422” omits the information needed to distinguish Store, Update and Setup problems.

Windows 10 machines can still display this code after October 14, 2025. The end of free updates and technical assistance changes the support position for that operating system; it does not convert an unlisted number into a documented Windows Update error. On a supported device, check the current Windows version and Microsoft’s support status before planning a broader upgrade.
