Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Error 0x800706CD means RPC_S_UNKNOWN_AUTHN_TYPE: a Windows component received a remote-procedure-call request that used an authentication type it does not recognize. The code does not identify the application, service, policy, or authentication package involved, so there is no single reset command that fixes every occurrence.
Start by recording where the message appeared and checking the Windows logs for the component that made the call. If it appeared during Windows Update, run Microsoft’s built-in Windows Update troubleshooter first. Only after identifying the affected component should you review its authentication, account, policy, certificate, or firewall configuration.

What error 0x800706CD means
The hexadecimal value 0x800706CD is the Win32/HRESULT form of RPC_S_UNKNOWN_AUTHN_TYPE. The documented text is “The authentication type is unknown.” In practical terms, one Windows process tried to communicate with another process or service through RPC (remote procedure call), but the receiving side did not recognize the authentication type supplied with that request.
RPC is used by many Windows services and by third-party software. The same code can therefore appear in an installer, an application, a background service, a domain or network operation, or Windows Update. The number by itself does not tell you which component is at fault, which authentication package should be enabled, or whether a registry, service, or cache change is appropriate.

Microsoft’s published common Windows Update error table for Windows 10 and Windows 11 does not list 0x800706CD. Treating it as a Windows-Update-only code, or applying a generic cache-reset recipe without identifying the caller, can leave the underlying problem untouched and may damage a working configuration.
Before changing anything, identify the failing component
Capture the context while the error is still reproducible. Write down the application or installer name, the service involved (if shown), the update KB number (if an update was being installed), the complete error text, and the exact time. Also note whether the computer is joined to a domain, uses a local account, or recently received a policy, certificate, firewall, driver, or software change.
- Press
Win, type Event Viewer, and open it. - Expand Windows Logs, then inspect System and Application.
- Use the timestamp you recorded to locate warnings and errors immediately before and after the 0x800706CD message.
- Open each relevant event and record its General and Details information, including the process, service, provider, account, and any authentication or RPC wording.
- Repeat the operation once, if safe, and compare the new event time. A matching process or service name is more useful than the hexadecimal code alone.
Do not disable authentication, change domain policy, or edit the registry merely because an event mentions RPC. Those changes can reduce security and still fail to address the caller.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter on Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run. On current Windows 11 installations, Microsoft directs users to the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app; follow that app’s prompts if Windows opens it instead of a classic troubleshooter window.
- Allow the checks and any offered repairs to finish. Read the reported result rather than assuming that the code has been removed.
- Restart the computer. Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter on Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security, select Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update and choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply only the repairs it reports, restart, and then open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
The troubleshooter addresses common update conditions; it does not prove that 0x800706CD originated in Windows Update or that an RPC authentication mismatch has been corrected. If the same code returns, use the event timestamp to identify the process or service involved.

Follow Microsoft’s general update guidance when the troubleshooter is inconclusive
Use Microsoft’s “Troubleshoot problems updating Windows” guidance for the installation or recovery path that matches your symptoms. Follow the edition-specific instructions shown for your device and keep the exact KB number and build information in your notes. Do not substitute a registry edit, service-account change, or cache deletion simply because it appears in an unrelated error guide.
Windows 10 free Windows Update support and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 installation can continue to run after that date, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. If your issue is on Windows 10, record the edition and build before deciding whether an in-place upgrade or another supported recovery path is suitable.
Check the RPC and authentication configuration of the originating component
Once Event Viewer or the application’s own log identifies the caller, compare the configuration on both ends of the RPC conversation. The correct setting depends on that vendor’s documentation and on whether the connection is local, domain-based, or across a network.
Compare authentication settings
- Check which authentication package or mechanism the client is requesting and which mechanisms the receiving service accepts.
- Compare the client and server security settings after the last known-good run. A mismatch can follow a software upgrade, policy deployment, certificate change, or account change.
- Verify that the service is running under the intended account and that the account still has the permissions required by the application.
- On domain-connected systems, check whether a recent domain or local security policy changed authentication requirements. Record the policy name and scope before altering it.
Review network and firewall changes
- Identify whether the failing RPC call crosses a machine or network boundary. If it does, compare the firewall rules and endpoint-security settings on both systems.
- Check for a recent firewall, VPN, proxy, certificate, or endpoint-security change that coincides with the first failure.
- Do not broadly open RPC ports or turn off firewall protection as a test. Ask the application or network administrator for the documented ports and authentication requirements for that component.
Change only documented, reversible settings
Use the affected component’s vendor instructions for any authentication or security-policy change. Before editing a policy, export or record its current value, note the scope (local computer, user, or domain), and plan a rollback. A global reduction in RPC authentication can expose other services and is not a general repair for 0x800706CD.

If the vendor does not document a compatible authentication type for the version you are running, stop changing settings and escalate with the diagnostic package described below. The code alone cannot tell you whether the missing type is caused by an unsupported application version, a policy mismatch, or a damaged component.
Repair Windows files only when the evidence points to corruption
Servicing or recovery tools may be appropriate when Event Viewer shows damaged Windows components, failed servicing operations, or a broader pattern of system-file errors. However, the available Microsoft pages do not publish a 0x800706CD-specific SFC, DISM, registry, or cache command. Do not present one of those commands as a universal fix.
If Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends a servicing or recovery step for your edition and symptoms, follow that sequence exactly and allow it to finish before testing again. Keep the resulting log or completion message. If logs point to an application or service rather than corrupted Windows files, return to that component’s support instructions instead of repeatedly repairing the operating system.

After each change, reproduce the same action that originally failed and record the result. - Still fails with the same event: the setting may not belong to the caller, or another policy or account mismatch remains.
- Fails only for one user or account: compare that account’s permissions, profile, certificates, and service credentials with a known-good account, following the application’s documentation.
- Fails only across the network: concentrate on the remote service, firewall path, domain policy, and certificate or trust changes.
- Fails only in one application: collect that application’s version and logs and contact its vendor; do not assume Windows Update is involved.
- Disappears after an update or policy rollback: document the exact change and seek a supported replacement rather than leaving a broad security exception in place.
What to send when you need support
If the error returns after the applicable troubleshooter and documented component checks, prepare a complete diagnostic package. Include:
- The exact error text and code, including capitalization and punctuation.
- The application, installer, or service name that displayed it.
- The date and time of each occurrence, with your time zone if support is remote.
- Relevant Event Viewer entries from Windows Logs > System and Application, including provider, event ID, process, and account details.
- Your Windows edition, architecture, and build number. Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and record the displayed version and build. - The update KB number, if the failure occurred while installing an update.
- Recent software, policy, certificate, firewall, account, or network changes.
- The troubleshooting steps already attempted and their exact results.
Send this package to the application or service vendor first when the logs identify a third-party component. Use Microsoft Support when the events identify Windows servicing or a Microsoft component, or when the vendor’s documented configuration cannot resolve the mismatch. Redact passwords, tokens, private keys, and unrelated personal data before sharing logs.
How the available remedies compare
| Remedy | Identifies the RPC caller? | Reversible and documented? | Security impact | User-data impact | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Event Viewer and application logs | Often; it can reveal the process or service | Yes; observation only | None | Preserves data | First step for every context |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | No; it targets common update conditions | Microsoft-supported workflow | Normally low; review proposed repairs | Preserves personal files | When the message appeared during Windows Update |
| Microsoft’s general update guidance | Sometimes, through edition-specific diagnostics | Supported when followed for the matching symptom | Depends on the selected recovery step | Depends on the chosen path; read warnings | When the troubleshooter cannot resolve an update failure |
| Vendor-documented authentication or policy change | Yes, if the vendor’s logs identify its component | Should be reversible and version-specific | Can be significant; avoid global weakening | Preserves data when configuration-only | When client and server authentication settings do not match |
| Generic registry, SFC, DISM, or cache recipe | No | Not established for this code | Varies; unsupported edits can create new faults | Usually intended to preserve data, but no universal result is established | Do not use as a blind first response |
| Escalation with logs and build details | Yes, when support can correlate the evidence | Supported diagnostic path | None beyond safe log sharing | Preserves data | When the code persists or the caller is unclear |
Frequently asked questions
Is 0x800706CD a virus warning?
No conclusion about malware follows from this code. It identifies an unknown RPC authentication type, not an infection. Use your normal security software and investigate the process named in the logs rather than treating the number itself as a malware diagnosis.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why can it appear during Windows Update if it is not in Microsoft’s common update-error table?
Windows Update can call other services and components that use RPC. A failure in one of those calls can surface while an update is running, even though Microsoft does not list 0x800706CD as a standard Windows Update code. The event log is needed to distinguish an update condition from an unrelated service or application failure.
Best Value
Can I fix it by resetting the Windows Update cache?
The available Microsoft guidance does not establish a cache reset as a universal repair for 0x800706CD. Run the applicable troubleshooter and follow the general update instructions first; reset or servicing steps should match the evidence and the supported procedure for your Windows edition.
Should I disable RPC authentication or lower security to make the call work?
Do not make a global change. A lower authentication requirement can expose other RPC services and may not match the affected application’s protocol. Change only a setting documented by the component’s vendor, record the previous value, and keep a rollback path.
Which Windows versions are covered?
The troubleshooting paths above apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10. Windows 10 free Windows Update support and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025; record your build and consider Microsoft’s recommended move to Windows 11 when planning longer-term support.
