Error 0x8007045D means Windows encountered an I/O device error while trying to read or write data. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis of one particular part. The failure may be caused by damaged media, a bad cable or port, file-system corruption, bad sectors, a failing drive, or—during optical-disc work—a burner, firmware, or unsupported burn speed.

Protect important files before attempting repairs. Then identify whether the error occurs during Windows installation, an optical-disc operation, a USB or hard-drive transfer, or a backup. Use the matching checks below, starting with the least destructive test.

What 0x8007045D means

Microsoft defines 0x8007045D as ERROR_IO_DEVICE: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” The code appears when a requested read or write cannot be completed somewhere in the storage path. Windows does not identify the failed component from the code alone.

The storage path can include the source drive, destination drive, USB port, cable, enclosure, power supply, optical disc, burner, or the file-system structures on a volume. A drive that is beginning to fail can also produce intermittent errors that look like ordinary corruption.

Do this before troubleshooting

Save the files that still open

If the affected drive is readable, copy the most important documents, photos, and other irreplaceable files to a known-good disk. Prioritize data over repair attempts. Stop repeated retries if the drive clicks, disconnects, becomes read-only, or slows dramatically; those symptoms can indicate hardware trouble, and software repair is not guaranteed to recover inaccessible data.

Record the exact operation

Write down what you were doing when the message appeared:

  • Installing Windows from a disc or USB device
  • Reading or burning an optical disc
  • Copying files between a computer and USB or external storage
  • Creating or restoring a backup or system image
  • Copying files on an internal hard drive

This determines which device to test first. If the error follows a particular drive or disc to another computer, that media is the leading suspect. If the same device works elsewhere but fails through one computer port, cable, or enclosure, the computer-side path deserves attention.

Remove unnecessary hardware

For installation problems, shut down and unplug nonessential external hardware before trying again. Disconnect extra USB drives, docks, printers, card readers, and other peripherals. Leave only the keyboard, display, required installation media, and the target drive connected. A simpler configuration removes competing drivers, power demands, and devices that Windows setup might try to access.

Retry the operation after removing the extras. If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the one that changes the result.

Fix Windows 8 installation-media errors

When a disc is used

An installation disc can fail because the disc is incompatible or defective, the burner is malfunctioning, the burner firmware is outdated, or the disc was written at a speed the burner or media does not support. Try a different disc of a compatible type or brand. If you created the disc yourself, check for a firmware update for the burner from its manufacturer and create the disc again at a slower burn speed.

Inspect the disc for visible damage and test it in another compatible optical drive if one is available. If another disc works in the same drive, replace the failed media rather than repeatedly retrying it.

When a USB installer is used

Test the installer in another USB port, preferably one directly on the computer rather than through a hub or dock. Try another cable or enclosure when the installation source is housed in one. If a newly created installer works while the original does not, rebuild the installation media on a known-good USB flash drive. A replacement installer can isolate bad removable media; it cannot repair a failing internal disk.

Check the target disk

If several known-good installation sources fail at the same point, the target disk or its connection may be the problem. Reseat the drive and test a different cable or port where the hardware allows it. Preserve data on the target before destructive installation actions; formatting or repartitioning removes the existing file system and can make recovery harder.

Fix USB, external-drive, and ordinary copy failures

Test the complete path

  1. Disconnect the affected device and reconnect it directly to another USB port.
  2. Replace the USB cable if the device uses a detachable cable.
  3. If the drive is in an external enclosure, try a different enclosure or a known-good power source where applicable.
  4. Copy a small, nonessential file first. Then try a different source file and a known-good destination.
  5. Repeat the transfer with another removable drive. Compare whether the error follows the original drive or remains with one port, cable, or computer.

A transfer that fails only with one destination points toward that destination or its file system. A failure that follows the same portable drive across ports points toward the drive, enclosure, or its cable. A failure affecting several devices through one port suggests a port, hub, or power problem.

Check for connection and power symptoms

Unexpected disconnects, a drive that repeatedly reconnects, a device that turns read-only, or a steadily slowing transfer are more concerning than a single bad file. Stop intensive testing when those symptoms appear and make a data-preservation plan before attempting repair.

Run CHKDSK carefully

CHKDSK examines file-system metadata and checks for logical and physical disk errors. The command can repair file-system problems, but it cannot make failing hardware reliable. Microsoft warns that a failing read head or another hardware fault can make CHKDSK behave unpredictably.

Use the file-system repair option

  1. Sign in with an account that can elevate permissions.
  2. Open an elevated Command Prompt (Command Prompt started with administrator privileges).
  3. Run chkdsk X: /f, replacing X: with the drive letter of the affected volume.
  4. Read the result and allow Windows to schedule the check at restart if the volume is in use.
  5. Restart when prompted and let the check finish without interrupting power.

The /f switch tells CHKDSK to fix file-system errors. Use the correct volume letter; running a repair against the wrong volume can affect unrelated data.

Use bad-sector checking only after data protection

If unreadable sectors are suspected and important files are backed up, run chkdsk X: /r. The /r option includes bad-sector detection and attempts to recover readable information. It can take substantially longer than a standard file-system check, especially on a large or damaged disk. Do not treat a completed run as a clean bill of health when the device continues to report I/O errors.

Interpret an unsuccessful check

CHKDSK may be unable to complete, report that the volume is inaccessible, or appear to behave inconsistently when the underlying hardware is failing. Those results are reasons to stop repeated repair attempts, copy what remains accessible, and consider professional data recovery before formatting, repartitioning, or replacing the disk.

Repair Windows image files after the disk checks clean

If the storage path works with known-good media and CHKDSK does not show a continuing disk problem, repair the Windows image. Open an administrator Command Prompt and run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Allow the operation to finish, restart Windows 8, and retry the original task. DISM addresses Windows image component problems; it does not repair a defective cable, disc, port, or failing drive. If the same I/O error returns during unrelated transfers, return to physical-path testing rather than repeatedly running DISM.

When the error occurs during backup

Check both the source and destination

A backup reads from one volume and writes to another, so either end can generate 0x8007045D. Confirm that the destination has a stable connection and enough usable space, then test a different cable, port, enclosure, or destination disk. Do not assume the source is healthy merely because ordinary files can be opened; a backup may reach sectors that routine use has not touched.

Run CHKDSK on both volumes

For a Windows 8.1 system-image failure, Microsoft guidance recommends running CHKDSK /R on the source and destination volumes, then retrying the backup. Substitute each volume’s drive letter in the command and use this deeper check only after protecting important data. If either volume repeatedly reports unreadable sectors or disconnects, stop the backup and address the suspect hardware first.

Compare the available fixes

Operation First checks Data risk Changes hardware or software? What the result tells you
Windows installation Remove nonessential hardware; test another installer, port, cable, or disc Low until formatting or repartitioning; preserve the target first Usually hardware/media isolation; installation changes software later Whether the installer or target storage path is failing
Optical reading or burning New compatible disc, different drive, current burner firmware, slower burn speed Low for the computer; failed media may be unusable Media, firmware, and burn settings Whether the disc, burner, firmware, or speed is incompatible
USB or external copy Another port and cable; direct connection; known-good destination Low for a read-only test; stop if the drive is deteriorating Physical path first, then file-system repair Whether the error follows the drive or stays with the computer path
Backup or system image Test both source and destination; CHKDSK on both when data is protected Medium to high if a failing source is stressed Connection and file-system checks Which end of the backup path cannot reliably read or write

Replace media only after isolating the fault

If a different cable, port, enclosure, destination, or optical disc resolves the error, replace the failed part. A new USB flash drive is useful for rebuilding installation media or testing transfers. It is not a remedy for a failing internal disk, and copying a damaged source onto new media does not repair the source.

When the same disk fails through multiple known-good connections, replacement becomes more likely than a software-only fix. If the disk contains files that are not backed up, arrange recovery before replacing, formatting, or repartitioning it.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek recovery help

  • The drive clicks, grinds, repeatedly disconnects, or becomes progressively slower.
  • Important files remain inaccessible after changing the cable, port, enclosure, and destination.
  • CHKDSK cannot complete or repeatedly reports unreadable sectors.
  • The device switches to read-only mode while data is still missing.
  • The error returns across several computers or known-good ports.

Professional data-recovery services may be appropriate before destructive operations. No software command can guarantee recovery from mechanically or electrically failing hardware.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Running repair commands before copying data: protect irreplaceable files first whenever the volume still opens.
  • Blaming Windows immediately: 0x8007045D identifies an I/O failure, not a specific Windows component.
  • Testing only one part of a USB setup: check the drive, cable, port, enclosure, power, source, and destination.
  • Repeating a failing optical burn at the same speed: use compatible media, check firmware, and try a slower speed.
  • Formatting to make the message disappear: formatting destroys the existing file-system structures and can remove the best chance of recovering files.
  • Assuming CHKDSK proves the disk is healthy: it repairs logical structures and checks sectors, but hardware faults can remain and can make its behavior unpredictable.

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 qualification

The error definition and troubleshooting principles apply to both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. The backup example cited above is specifically a Windows 8.1 system-image case. Menu wording and restart behavior can vary slightly by edition and system configuration, but the administrator Command Prompt commands shown here use the same syntax.

The practical decision is simple: first preserve data, then remove unnecessary devices and isolate the read/write path. Use CHKDSK for file-system or sector checks, DISM only when the storage path is sound and Windows image corruption is plausible, and replace or escalate the hardware when the error follows a failing device.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that increase CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary and cache files, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days, followed by a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software and does not replace it, and results vary.
