The code does not identify one guaranteed failed part. The cause may be a bad DVD, optical-drive firmware, a USB cable or port, an external disk, an enclosure, a controller, or the source or destination drive.
The title is often mistyped as 0X08007045D. The canonical Windows code is 0x8007045D. Use the procedure below according to whether the failure occurs while burning a DVD, copying files to external storage, formatting, backing up, or installing.

What error 0x8007045D means
Windows assigns 0x8007045D to ERROR_IO_DEVICE, described as: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” An I/O operation is a read or write between Windows and storage. A read can fail while Windows is opening a file; a write can fail while it is copying, burning, formatting, or creating a backup.
The code is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis. It does not prove that the external disk itself is dead. A defective disc, optical drive, USB connection, cable, enclosure, storage controller, source disk, or destination disk can interrupt the same request. Isolating those parts is more useful than repeatedly retrying the original operation.

Stop repeated writes
If the device still opens, immediately copy irreplaceable files to a known-good destination and open several of those copies to verify that they work. Do not keep retrying a failed copy, backup, format, or burn on a questionable device; repeated writes can increase stress on a failing disk.
Record the exact trigger
Write down what Windows was doing when the code appeared:
- Burning a DVD or using the Windows 7 “Like a USB flash drive” disc format.
- Copying files to or from an external hard disk.
- Running a backup, formatting a volume, or installing files.
- Reading one particular file or failing at different points in the operation.
Also note whether the problem follows one device when you change ports or computers. That observation determines the safest next test.

| Situation | First reversible action | What a repeated failure suggests | Data risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| DVD burning | Use a new disc, preferably from another brand, and select a slower burn speed. | The disc, media batch, burner, or burner firmware may be at fault. | Low for the source files; the blank disc is disposable. |
| Copying to an external hard disk | Reseat the cable, try another USB port, then test a known-good cable or another computer. | If the error follows the disk, suspect the disk, enclosure, or its media. | Do not format or run repair commands until valuable files are protected. |
| Reading from a source disk | Try the same file or disk through another connection and copy readable data first. | The source media, cable, enclosure, or drive may be degrading. | High if the only copy is on the failing device. |
| Formatting or installation | Confirm the selected drive and test the storage path before destructive actions. | A persistent error can indicate a device or controller problem rather than a Windows setting. | Formatting erases data; recovery should come first. |
Fixes for DVD-burning failures
1. Replace the disc and change the brand
Remove the disc that failed and try a new, blank recordable DVD from a different brand or pack. A defective or incompatible disc can produce the same I/O code even when the burner is healthy. Do not use the failed disc as the only test of the drive.
2. Reduce the burn speed
In the burning program, choose a lower write speed than the maximum offered. A slower burn gives the drive more time to maintain a reliable write, and it is a recommended test when Windows 7 stops with 0x8007045D.

3. Check the burner manufacturer’s firmware guidance
Look up the exact optical-drive model and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for available firmware. Firmware updates are model-specific. Do not interrupt an update or apply firmware intended for another drive.
4. Check the Windows 7 UDF case
Microsoft documented this error during UDF operations involving DVD+/-RW media used in the “Like a USB flash drive” format. If your failure matches that scenario, check Microsoft’s Windows 7 UDF bulletin and install the update that applies to your Windows 7 edition and service level. An update for a different edition or service level is not an appropriate substitute.

5. Separate the disc from the drive
If multiple new discs and slower speeds still fail, test another compatible optical drive if one is available. If the same drive fails with different media, the drive or its firmware becomes more likely than one defective disc. Preserve the original files on the computer or another disk while testing.
Fixes for external-drive and file-copy failures
1. Reseat and replace the USB connection
Safely stop the transfer if possible, disconnect the external drive, and reconnect it firmly. Try a different USB port, then a known-good cable of the correct type. A loose connector, damaged cable, or unreliable port can interrupt a write and generate the I/O code.
2. Test the device on another computer
After protecting readable data, connect the drive to another Windows computer. If it works there, the original computer’s port or connection path is suspect. If the same error occurs on several ports and computers, the drive, enclosure, cable, or storage media is more likely to be failing.

3. Do not format a disk that contains the only copy
Formatting may remove the file system and make recovery harder. A prompt to format an unreadable external disk is not evidence that formatting will repair the underlying I/O problem. Copy what you can first and stop if the device repeatedly disconnects or produces new read errors.
4. Run CHKDSK only after data protection
Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting for this error includes CHKDSK /R. The command checks the file system and attempts to locate readable information in bad areas, but it can take a long time and places additional work on a failing disk. Use it only when the correct drive letter is known and valuable files have already been copied.
Run CHKDSK /R safely in Windows 7
- Open Start, choose All Programs, open Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
- Identify the external volume’s drive letter in Windows Explorer. Replace
X:below with that exact letter; never guess it. - Enter
chkdsk X: /rand press Enter. - Read the result. Let the check finish if the disk remains stable, but do not repeatedly restart it after new mechanical, electrical, or disconnection symptoms.
- When it completes, retry a small, noncritical read or copy. If the original error returns, stop stressing the disk rather than looping the same check.
If Windows says the volume is in use, follow its prompt only when you are certain that the drive letter is correct and the volume is the one you intend to check. Never run the command against a different disk simply to make the prompt go away.
Use the failure pattern to identify the next step
The error occurs with one DVD
Replace the disc and lower the burn speed. This is the most reversible path and does not justify replacing the burner immediately.
The error occurs with several DVD brands
Check the burner’s firmware guidance and the Windows 7 UDF applicability. If failures continue with multiple discs, isolate the optical drive by testing another compatible drive.

The error occurs only through one USB port
Use another port and replace the cable. The storage device may be healthy if it works reliably through a different connection.
The error follows an external disk
When the same disk fails across ports and computers, treat the disk, enclosure, cable, or media as suspect. Finish copying any readable files, then plan replacement rather than relying on the device for another backup.
The files are irreplaceable
Stop experimenting before formatting, initializing, replacing the enclosure, or repeatedly running repair commands. A professional data-recovery service is the safer escalation for a drive containing the only copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When replacement or professional recovery is appropriate
Persistent errors across different cables, USB ports, and computers are evidence that changing Windows settings alone is unlikely to solve the problem. If the device contains no needed data, replacement is generally safer than continuing failed writes. If it contains important data, prioritize specialist recovery and tell the provider exactly when the errors began and what tests have already been performed.

Frequently asked questions
Is 0x8007045D a virus warning?
No. The code identifies an unsuccessful storage read or write. It does not, by itself, establish malware or identify a specific failed component.
Why does the code appear during both DVD burning and external-drive copying?
Both operations depend on a complete I/O path. A disc or optical-drive problem can interrupt a burn, while a USB connection, enclosure, or hard-disk problem can interrupt an external copy; Windows can map either failed request to the same error.
Should I keep retrying until the copy succeeds?
No. If the data matters, protect it first and verify a separate copy. Repeated writes or repair attempts can add stress to a deteriorating device and may reduce later recovery options.
