Error 0x8007007E means Windows could not find a required module, usually a DLL. It is the HRESULT form of ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND, but the code alone does not identify one universal repair. The correct fix depends on whether it appears while printing, during Windows Update, at startup, or in one application. Record that context first, then follow the matching procedure below.

What error 0x8007007E means

Windows uses 0x8007007E when a process requests a module that cannot be located. A module may be a Windows component, a printer-related DLL, an application dependency, or a file loaded by a driver. In a printer connection scenario, Microsoft documents the code when Windows cannot locate a required DLL. The same code can also be raised by unrelated software, so copying a generic DLL is not a safe or reliable answer.

The message may appear as “The specified module could not be found,” or as part of a longer printer, update, startup, or application error. The code is not, by itself, evidence of malware, and no authoritative source establishes a general prevalence or success rate for it.

Start by identifying where the code appears

Before changing files or reinstalling Windows, write down the exact message and the event that triggers it. Include:

  • The application or Windows feature showing the error.
  • The printer model and whether it is connected by USB, a home or office network, or a shared computer.
  • Your Windows edition and version.
  • Whether the problem began after a Windows update, application update, driver change, or printer installation.
  • Whether every application fails or only one.

This information determines which repair path is appropriate. A missing printer module needs a printer and spooler workflow; a damaged Windows component needs DISM and SFC; an isolated application failure is normally repaired through that application’s installer.

Where 0x8007007E appears Most useful first path What to verify
Printing or adding a printer Printer troubleshooter, device reinstall, manufacturer driver, then Print Spooler reset USB/network/shared connection, driver source and architecture, spooler status, and whether all applications are affected
Windows Update or several Windows functions Administrator Command Prompt: DISM, then SFC Whether the commands complete and whether SFC reports unrepaired files
One application only Repair or reset the application, then reinstall its current installer The application’s event or error details and the actual module named there
Startup Identify the program named in the startup error, then repair or remove that program Recent software or driver changes and the module path shown in the message

How to fix 0x8007007E when printing

1. Run the Windows printer troubleshooter

On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Printer, and select Run. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Printer, and run it. The labels can vary slightly by build. Apply any recommended repair and try a test page.

2. Remove and add the printer again

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10.
  2. Select the affected printer and choose Remove or Remove device.
  3. Restart Windows and power-cycle the printer. For a network printer, confirm that the computer and printer are on the intended network; for a shared printer, confirm that the host computer is available.
  4. Return to the same settings page, choose Add device, and complete discovery or select the option to add the printer manually.
  5. Print a test page from Windows and then from the application that originally failed.

If Windows rediscovers the printer but the error returns when a job is sent, continue with the driver and spooler steps rather than repeatedly adding the same device.

3. Install the current driver from the printer manufacturer

Download the driver for the exact printer model from its manufacturer. Avoid driver files from download aggregators. Select the package that matches your Windows edition and system architecture, and follow the vendor’s installation instructions. A package intended for a different model, architecture, or Windows release can leave the required module unavailable.

After installation, remove any duplicate or obsolete printer entry that points to the old package, restart Windows, and test from more than one application. If only one program still fails, use the application-specific path below; if every program fails, reset the spooler.

4. Reset the Print Spooler

The Print Spooler is the Windows service that manages the printing process. Resetting it removes queued jobs and can clear a damaged queue or configuration. You need an administrator account.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Stop.
  3. Open File Explorer and enter %WINDIR%System32spoolPRINTERS in the address bar. Approve the administrator prompt if requested.
  4. Delete the files inside that folder. Do not delete the folder itself. These are pending print jobs.
  5. Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.
  6. Open its Properties, set Startup type to Automatic, select Apply, and close the dialog.
  7. Restart Windows and submit a small test page.

If the service will not start, note the exact service error. Recheck the printer driver installation and the path of any DLL named in the event details instead of downloading a replacement DLL from the web.

5. Compare the failure across connection types and applications

A USB printer that works after reinstalling but fails over a shared queue points to a different problem than a network printer that fails for every user. Test one local document and, where available, the printer’s built-in test page. Record whether the error occurs in one application or in all of them. This distinction helps you avoid changing a working driver when the fault is limited to a shared queue or a single program.

How to fix 0x8007007E during Windows Update or general Windows use

Run DISM first

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. At the elevated prompt, enter DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter.
  3. Wait for the operation to reach completion. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.

Microsoft describes DISM as providing the files required to repair corrupted Windows files. The command repairs the component store used by Windows servicing; it does not target a third-party application’s private files.

Run System File Checker second

  1. In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter sfc /scannow.
  2. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  3. Restart Windows even if the result says files were repaired, then repeat the action that produced 0x8007007E.

Microsoft states that sfc /scannow scans protected system files and replaces corrupted copies with cached versions. Run DISM before SFC; running SFC first can leave it without a healthy component source.

Interpret the results

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected system files appear intact. Continue with the context-specific printer or application procedure; the missing module may not be a Windows-protected file.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again. If the code remains, identify the application or driver requesting the missing module.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: review the SFC details in the CBS log, commonly %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log, and note the unrepaired file names.
  • DISM or SFC itself fails: copy the complete error text. A servicing failure can require a known-good matching component source or Windows reinstallation rather than another repetition of the same command.

How to fix 0x8007007E in one application

Use the application’s built-in repair option

In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. In Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Select the affected application, open its advanced options when available, and choose Repair. If Repair does not help, use Reset only after checking what data the reset removes; some applications discard local settings or cached content.

Reinstall from the publisher’s current installer

  1. Save documents, profiles, plug-ins, or license information that the application stores locally.
  2. Uninstall the application from its installed-apps page or its own uninstaller.
  3. Restart Windows to release files that were in use.
  4. Obtain the current installer from the application’s publisher and install the correct edition and architecture.
  5. Open the application and reproduce the original action.

If the error names a particular DLL or module, record that name and its path from the application’s error details or Windows Event Viewer. Do not replace it with a file downloaded from an unrelated site. A module can depend on other modules, and a file from another build can create new errors or prevent Windows from starting.

Check whether the failure is really application-specific

Open a different application that performs the same task, if one is available. For example, if a document editor fails to print but another program prints successfully, the printer and spooler are less likely to be the immediate cause. Conversely, if every program fails, return to the printer workflow or run DISM and SFC when other Windows functions are also affected.

What to do when DISM and SFC do not fix 0x8007007E

Review the unrepaired file information

When SFC reports that it could not repair some files, inspect the CBS details for the file names and versions. A manual replacement, if appropriate, requires a known-good copy that exactly matches the Windows build and architecture. The source must be trusted and the replacement must follow supported Windows servicing guidance.

Repair the originating component instead of a random DLL

If the CBS log contains no relevant file and only one application fails, repair or reinstall that application. If a printer is the only affected device, reinstall its manufacturer driver and reset the spooler. If Windows Update, startup, and several built-in tools fail, the issue is broader than one application and may require Windows reinstallation after personal data is backed up.

Know when to stop experimenting

Use a qualified technician when you cannot identify the module, when a service will not start after a supported reinstall, or when DISM and SFC leave protected files unrepaired. Provide the technician with the exact message, Windows version, recent changes, SFC result, CBS details, printer model, and driver package used. This evidence is more useful than a collection of randomly downloaded DLL files.

What not to do

  • Do not download a DLL from a generic “DLL fixer” or file-sharing site.
  • Do not copy a system file from another computer unless its Windows build, edition, architecture, and file version are known to match and the replacement is supported.
  • Do not disable security software or system protections as a first response to a missing-module message.
  • Do not repeatedly install incompatible printer drivers over one another; remove the old device and use the exact manufacturer package.
  • Do not assume that 0x8007007E has one fix because the same code appeared in a different application or on another computer.

Windows 10 support and migration context

Microsoft’s printer support information states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer can still need the repair steps above, but the end of support matters when deciding whether to keep troubleshooting an older installation or move to a supported Windows 11 configuration. Check that the computer and printer manufacturer support the target Windows edition before migrating, and preserve printer settings and application data first.

Final diagnostic checklist

  • Write down the complete message, trigger, application, printer model, Windows version, and recent changes.
  • For printing, run the printer troubleshooter, remove and add the device, install the exact manufacturer driver, and reset Print Spooler if necessary.
  • For Windows Update or broad system failures, run DISM, wait for completion, then run sfc /scannow from an administrator Command Prompt.
  • For one application, use Repair or Reset where available, then reinstall the current publisher installer and inspect the application’s event details.
  • Use only matching, trusted component files; never download a random DLL.
  • If supported repairs cannot restore the component, prepare the logs and error details for a qualified technician or consider Windows reinstallation after a backup.
