In the Windows Update case, Microsoft associates it with corrupted files, permission problems, or incorrect system configuration. Start by recording the screen or task that shows the error, restart the computer, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and then use the built-in DISM and System File Checker tools. If updates still fail, reset the Windows Update cache and service. The same code can also occur during setup, backup, disk partitioning, Microsoft Store operations, or another application, where a Windows Update-only procedure may not resolve it.
What error 0x80070057 means
0x80070057 is a hexadecimal Windows error code commonly described as a parameter being incorrect. It is not a diagnosis by itself. Windows uses the same code in different workflows, so the location and action that produced it are essential clues.

Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance associates 0x80070057, along with 0x80080005, with corrupted files, permission issues, or incorrect system configurations. That explanation is strongest for Windows Update. It does not prove that every occurrence has the same cause, and it does not by itself indicate malware or a failing hard drive.

Before changing anything, write down the exact place where the message appears: the Windows Update page, an upgrade or setup screen, a backup job, Disk Management or partitioning, Microsoft Store, or a particular program. Also note what operation was in progress and whether the message appears every time. Those details determine which repair path is appropriate.

Choose the right repair path
| Where the code appears | Most relevant first steps | Why the context matters |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Restart, Windows Update troubleshooter, SFC, then DISM and an update-cache reset if needed | Microsoft documents this sequence for update failures involving corruption, permissions, or configuration. |
| Windows setup or an upgrade | Record the setup stage and exact message; restart and repair system files before retrying | Setup can fail for reasons unrelated to the update cache, so a cache reset is not automatically the answer. |
| Backup | Record the backup program, destination, and operation that failed; check that program’s own repair guidance | The hexadecimal code is shared by many Windows workflows and does not identify a single backup fault. |
| Disk partitioning | Stop before modifying partitions and preserve the exact warning | Partition changes can affect data; an update repair sequence is not a substitute for storage-specific troubleshooting. |
| Microsoft Store or another application | Capture the app name and action, then use the app or Store-specific repair route | The same code can be generated by an application parameter rather than Windows Update. |
The detailed procedure below is for the common Windows Update case. If your message appears elsewhere, use the context branches later in this article instead of repeating update commands blindly.
Before you start
- Save open documents and close programs that are installing or updating.
- Keep the computer connected to power, especially during system-file repair or an operating-system upgrade.
- Use an account that can approve administrator prompts. SFC, DISM, and service changes require elevation.
- Do not interrupt a scan because the percentage appears stuck. Repair tools can spend a long time on one phase.
- Write down each command’s final message. If a tool says it could not repair files, preserve that result and move to the next documented step rather than running the same command repeatedly.
Step 1: Restart Windows
A restart is Microsoft’s first general action for update failures. Select Start > Power > Restart, allow Windows to return to the desktop, and then try Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update again. (The Settings labels can differ slightly by Windows 10 build.)
If the update installs after the restart, no further repair is needed. If 0x80070057 returns, continue with the troubleshooter instead of repeatedly selecting “Check for updates.”
Step 2: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 10 includes a troubleshooter that checks common update-service and configuration problems.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose System, then Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Locate Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the prompts and allow the tool to apply a repair when it offers one.
- Restart if prompted, then return to Windows Update and try the update again.
Current Windows guidance uses the path above, but Windows 10 interfaces can change between releases. If your Settings app uses a different heading, search Settings for “troubleshoot” and open the Windows Update entry rather than downloading an unrelated utility.

Read the troubleshooter’s result. A detected service or configuration correction is useful evidence; a message that no problem was found does not prove that system files are healthy. Move to SFC when the error persists.
Step 3: Scan and repair protected system files with SFC
System File Checker (SFC) is built into Windows. Microsoft describes it as a tool that scans protected system files and restores missing or damaged components when possible.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- At the elevated prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
- Read the final result and keep it for your troubleshooting notes.
Do not close the window while the scan is running. The result normally distinguishes between no integrity violations, repaired files, and files that could not be repaired. A successful repair is a reason to restart and retry Windows Update; it is not a guarantee that every update problem has been removed.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, do not treat that message as a reason to repeat the scan indefinitely. Continue to DISM, which repairs the Windows component store that SFC relies on, and then run SFC again as directed by Microsoft’s repair procedure.
Step 4: Repair the component store with DISM, then run SFC again
Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) is another built-in Windows repair tool. Microsoft explains that DISM can repair the component store, while SFC checks protected system files. When corruption is suspected, use DISM with SFC and pay attention to each command’s result.

- Open an elevated Command Prompt again: Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. - Run the component-store repair command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and let DISM finish. Do not shut down the computer during the operation.
- When DISM completes, run the file check again:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands finish, then retry the update.
The command results determine what to do next. If DISM completes successfully and SFC reports that it repaired files, the restart gives Windows a clean opportunity to use those repairs. If either command reports that it could not complete or repair files, save the exact output and follow Microsoft’s next repair instruction for that result instead of guessing at additional switches.
These tools are part of Windows 10; you do not need a physical installation disc, a diagnostic gadget, or a separate “system cleaner” to run them.
Step 5: Reset the Windows Update cache and service
If the restart, troubleshooter, SFC, and DISM sequence does not clear a Windows Update failure, a damaged download or update cache may be involved. Microsoft documents stopping the Windows Update service, clearing the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and starting the service again.
Stop the update service
- Save your work and open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Stop the Windows Update service with:
net stop wuauserv
Wait for Windows to confirm that the service has stopped. If another program is actively installing an update, allow it to finish or close it before continuing.
Clear the cached contents
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Select the items inside that folder and delete the contents.
Clear the contents, not the parent SoftwareDistribution folder itself. Windows recreates required cache data when the service runs again. If Windows denies access, confirm that the service really stopped and that File Explorer is running under an administrator-capable account. Do not force-delete files that are still in use.

Resetting this cache removes downloaded update data so Windows can obtain a fresh copy. It does not repair unrelated errors produced by setup, backup software, partitioning, the Microsoft Store, or another application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret failures during the sequence
SFC says no integrity violations were found
That result means SFC did not detect a protected-system-file problem in its scan. It does not identify the cause of every 0x80070057 event. Continue with the troubleshooter result and, for an update-specific failure, the cache reset if you have not already performed it.
SFC says files could not be repaired
Preserve the final message, run DISM, and then run SFC again. Repeating SFC without addressing component-store corruption is unlikely to add useful information.
DISM or SFC stops with an error
Record the exact text and code, including whether the command completed or stopped. The output determines the next Microsoft repair procedure. Avoid substituting random command-line options copied from unrelated fixes.
The troubleshooter reports no problem
Proceed to system-file checks when the update still fails. A troubleshooter that finds nothing does not rule out corruption in the component store or a stale update cache.

The error returns after the cache reset
Confirm that the Windows Update service was stopped before the cache contents were cleared, that it was started again, and that the computer was restarted. If the sequence was completed correctly, preserve the exact Windows Update message and investigate the update or build involved rather than deleting additional Windows folders.
When 0x80070057 appears outside Windows Update
Setup or an upgrade
Write down the setup phase, edition of Windows 10, and whether the failure occurs during download, installation, or the first restart. Restarting and repairing system files can address general corruption, but a setup-specific failure may require setup logs or guidance for that release. Do not assume that deleting the Windows Update cache will fix an error generated by the setup program itself.
Backup
Record the backup application, source, destination, and operation that produced the code. Check whether the failure occurs with one destination or every destination. Because 0x80070057 is shared across workflows, the Windows Update troubleshooter is not a universal backup repair.
Disk partitioning
Stop before accepting a partition change when the message is unclear. Preserve the exact warning and verify which disk and partition are selected. Partition operations can affect data, so do not apply an update-cache procedure as a substitute for storage-specific recovery guidance.
Microsoft Store or another application
Capture the application name, action, and full message. A program can use the same hexadecimal value for an invalid argument. In that situation, use the application’s own reset, repair, reinstall, or support procedure only after confirming what data those actions affect.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the code has one cause: the same value can be emitted by several Windows components.
- Running commands in a normal prompt: SFC, DISM, and service commands need an elevated Command Prompt.
- Stopping a scan early: wait for a completion message before deciding whether it helped.
- Deleting the wrong folder: clear the contents of
SoftwareDistributiononly after stopping Windows Update; do not remove unrelated Windows directories. - Repeating a failed command without reading its output: an unrepairable result is a signal to move to the next documented step.
- Using a Windows Update fix for a different workflow: setup, backup, partitioning, Store, and application failures need their own context.
- Expecting a guaranteed result: these procedures address documented corruption, permission, configuration, and cache conditions, but no single sequence repairs every occurrence of the code.
A concise decision checklist
- Identify exactly where 0x80070057 appears and record the full message.
- If it is Windows Update, restart Windows.
- Run Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
- Run
sfc /scannowfrom an administrator Command Prompt. - If corruption remains or SFC cannot repair files, run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then run SFC again. - If update failures continue, stop Windows Update, clear the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, start the service, restart, and try again. - If the code appears in setup, backup, partitioning, Store, or another app, stop applying update-specific steps and follow the procedure for that workflow.
