Error 0x80070057 means “ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER — The parameter is incorrect.” It is a general Windows error, not a diagnosis tied to one file type. The correct repair depends on where it appears: Windows Update, backup or restore, Windows Setup, a disk operation, or a video and media application. Record that context first, protect your files, then use the least disruptive repair that matches the failure.
What error 0x80070057 means
Microsoft Learn defines 0x80070057 as ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER, displayed as “The parameter is incorrect.” Windows or an application has rejected a value, setting, path, or operation parameter. The same hexadecimal code can therefore appear in unrelated situations.

Microsoft Support lists the code among Windows Update installation failures and associates those cases with corrupted files, permission problems, or incorrect system configuration. A message that appears while opening a video does not automatically prove that a codec or media file is damaged. The operation that produced the code is the important clue.
Identify where the code appears before changing anything
Write down the complete message, the application or Windows screen showing it, and what you clicked immediately beforehand. Use that record to choose a repair path instead of running every command at random.

| Where you see 0x80070057 | What it tells you | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update or an update installation | The update process may be affected by corrupted files, permissions, or configuration. | Restart, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then repair Windows images and system files. |
| Backup, restore, or Windows Recovery | The recovery operation rejected a parameter or encountered a damaged or inaccessible component. | Back up important files and retry the least destructive recovery option. |
| Windows Setup or installation media | Setup could not accept a value or use a required installation component. | Check the installation media and prepare a known-good recovery or installation USB. |
| Disk, partition, or file-system operation | A volume or file-system problem is possible, although the code alone does not prove drive failure. | Back up critical data, inspect the volume, and use chkdsk only when appropriate. |
| A video player, editor, or another media application | The application supplied or received an invalid parameter. The code is not, by itself, a codec diagnosis. | Record the exact app and action, then apply the Windows or application-specific path indicated by that context. |
Protect your data before repair
Copy important documents, photographs, project files, saved games, and other irreplaceable data to another drive or a trusted backup location before disk repair, reset, reinstall, or recovery operations. Microsoft’s recovery guidance warns that some options can remove applications, settings, or personal files. Microsoft’s file-system corruption guidance likewise recommends backing up critical data before attempting repairs.
If the computer is unstable, prioritize the files you cannot recreate. Do not begin a reset or reinstall until the backup has completed and you can open a sample of the copied files.
Repair 0x80070057 during Windows Update
1. Restart and retry once
Save your work, restart Windows, and try the update again. A restart clears a pending operation and ensures that a previously installed update is not waiting for another reboot. If the same code returns, continue with the troubleshooter rather than repeatedly clicking Install.

2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Use the path matching your Windows edition:
- Windows 11: open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run.
- Windows 10: open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
Accept a suggested correction only after reading what it changes. Restart if Windows requests it, then check for updates again. If the troubleshooter reports that it could not resolve the issue, retain that result and proceed to component-store repair.
3. Repair the Windows component store with DISM
DISM repairs the Windows image that supplies replacement files. Microsoft describes it as providing the files required to repair corrupted files. To run it:
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. - At the elevated prompt, enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. - Wait for the operation to reach completion. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
Copy the final status message if the command reports an error. A successful completion means the component store repair finished; it does not by itself confirm that Windows Update will succeed.
4. Repair protected system files with SFC
After DISM completes, run System File Checker in the same elevated Command Prompt:
- Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Allow the scan to reach 100 percent.
- Read the final message, restart Windows, and try Windows Update again.
Run DISM before SFC in this sequence. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source for replacing damaged protected files. Record both final messages if the update still fails; they identify whether the repair completed or needs escalation.
Check a disk or file-system problem safely
If 0x80070057 appears while formatting, restoring, partitioning, copying, or otherwise working with a volume, treat the possibility of file-system corruption seriously. Back up critical data first. A disk repair can make the volume unavailable while it works, so schedule downtime and close applications that use the affected drive.
Run CHKDSK when the volume is the suspected cause
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Replace
C:with the affected drive letter and enterchkdsk C: /f /r. - If Windows says the volume is in use and offers to schedule the check for the next restart, save your work and accept only if you have completed the backup and can leave the computer unavailable during the scan.
- Restart when ready and let the check finish without powering off the computer.
The /f option requests file-system corrections and /r asks Windows to locate unreadable information while recovering what it can. Use the command for the volume implicated by the error, not indiscriminately on every drive. If the operation reports a serious problem or the error returns, preserve the diagnostic result and move to recovery or professional data-recovery advice rather than repeatedly stressing a failing volume.
Use Windows Recovery when normal repairs do not work
Recovery choices become more disruptive as you move from an individual update to a complete reset or reinstall. Keep the backup requirement in force for every option.

Enter Windows Recovery
When Windows still starts, use the recovery entry in Settings:
- Windows 11: Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now.
- Windows 10: Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now.
From the recovery menu, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options. If the problem began after a particular update, select Uninstall Updates and follow the on-screen choice. If there was no clear update trigger, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier restore point. These options target system changes before you consider a reset.
Reset or reinstall only after backup
Reset this PC reinstalls Windows and presents choices that determine whether personal files are retained. Read each screen carefully: retaining personal files does not retain installed applications and settings, and a different choice can remove personal files. If reset cannot complete or Windows cannot boot, use a recovery drive or Windows installation media.

Windows installation media
Microsoft says a working PC can create Windows installation media on a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. The USB is a delivery method for setup and recovery tools; inserting an 8 GB drive alone does not repair 0x80070057.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Use a working Windows PC and an empty USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity.
- Download and run Microsoft’s Windows installation-media creation utility from the official Windows download page.
- Choose the option to create installation media, select the appropriate Windows edition and language, and select the USB drive.
- Confirm the correct USB device before continuing. Creation can erase or overwrite its existing contents.
- Start the affected PC from the USB when you need Startup Repair, System Restore, command-line recovery, reset, or reinstall options.
Recovery drive
Windows’ Recovery Drive utility creates bootable recovery media on an empty USB drive. Microsoft warns that the process erases the drive’s existing contents, so copy anything on it elsewhere first. Use a recovery drive when you need to reach Windows Recovery on a machine that will not boot normally.
If the message appears in a video or media application
The word “video” in a search title can mislead you into treating 0x80070057 as a dedicated video-codec error. Microsoft’s definition remains the same: an invalid parameter. The application may have passed an unacceptable value, or the underlying Windows operation may be damaged.
- Record the application name, its version if shown, the exact file or operation, and the complete error text.
- Determine whether Windows Update, backup, setup, or a disk operation also shows the code. If it does, follow that Windows path first.
- If the code occurs only in one media application, use that application’s documented repair, reset, or support process for the exact action that fails. Do not assume that changing a codec will fix a Windows parameter error.
- If the application failure is accompanied by broader Windows symptoms, run the DISM-then-SFC sequence described above and restart before testing again.
There is no single media-player command that universally repairs this code. The exact app and operation determine whether the problem belongs to the application, its configuration, the file being processed, or Windows itself.
What to do when a repair fails
DISM or SFC ends with an error
Save the exact command output and the time it occurred. Do not claim success merely because the command started. If both repairs complete but Windows Update still returns 0x80070057, use Windows Recovery to remove a recently installed update or try System Restore, provided a suitable restore point exists.

CHKDSK cannot finish
Leave the computer powered and allow the scheduled scan to complete when the volume is unavailable. If it repeatedly fails, stop further write-heavy repair attempts, keep the backup copies safe, and obtain qualified storage or data-recovery help.
Reset or reinstall is the only remaining option
Review the backup again, disconnect storage devices that are not part of the repair, and read every erase or format confirmation. A reset or reinstall can remove applications, settings, or personal files. If the machine contains data you cannot replace and no verified backup exists, prioritize data recovery before wiping the Windows installation.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you captured the exact screen, application, action, and full message?
- Have you backed up critical files before disk repair, reset, or reinstall?
- Is the failure limited to Windows Update, or does it affect setup, recovery, a volume, or a media application too?
- For Windows Update, did you restart, run the matching troubleshooter, run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, then runsfc /scannow? - If a drive is implicated, did you schedule enough downtime for
chkdsk /f /rand protect the data first? - If Windows will not boot, do you have a recovery drive or installation USB, and is the USB empty or backed up?
- Are you choosing reset or reinstall only after understanding which apps, settings, and files may be removed?

When to stop troubleshooting
0x80070057 is a useful clue but never a complete diagnosis. Stop escalating when the error disappears and the original operation succeeds. If it persists after the context-appropriate repair, recovery options, and a verified backup, keep the command results and exact symptoms for Microsoft support or a qualified technician. The safest next step depends on whether the remaining problem is an update, a Windows installation, a storage volume, or one particular application.
