, but that message does not identify one universal fault. On Windows 8, the correct repair depends on what you were doing when it appeared. For a Windows Update or upgrade failure, work through the repair sequence below: restart, check storage and the disk, run the Update troubleshooter, reset damaged update data, then run DISM before SFC. If the message appears while checking effective access on a network share, use the separate drive-letter workaround instead. Do not apply unrelated registry tweaks until you have identified the operation that failed.
What error 0x80070057 means
Microsoft labels 0x80070057 as The parameter is incorrect.
It is a broad invalid-parameter result: a Windows component, setup program, update service or application received a value or configuration it could not use. The code itself is not a diagnosis of one damaged file, one driver or one security threat.

In update and installation scenarios, Microsoft associates the code with possibilities including corrupted files, permission problems and incorrect system configuration. The same hexadecimal code can also be produced by backup software, disk-partitioning tasks, application installers or a network-share access check. Consequently, a fix that is appropriate for Windows Update may do nothing for a partitioning or application-installation failure.

Identify the failed operation before changing anything
Write down the screen, wizard or command that displayed the code, the action immediately before it, and whether the failure happened once or on every attempt. The wording around the number often tells you whether you are dealing with an update package, an installation source, a permissions check or an application-specific parameter.

Repair sequence for Windows Update, upgrade and installation failures
The following order starts with reversible checks and progresses to component repair. It is intended for a failure in Windows Update or Windows setup, not for the separate network-share symptom.
1. Restart Windows and retry once
Save your work, restart the computer, and run the same update or installation again. A pending reboot, a locked update file or a service that did not shut down cleanly can make a one-time retry succeed. If the same code returns, continue rather than repeatedly launching the installer.
2. Check space, connectivity, time and disk condition
- Open File Explorer and verify that the Windows system volume has enough free space for the update or installation. Remove or move personal files only when you know they are safe to remove; do not delete arbitrary files from the Windows directory.
- Confirm that the network connection is working if the operation downloads files. A connection that drops during a download can leave incomplete update data in the cache.
- Check the date, time and time zone in the Windows clock. An incorrect clock can interfere with service and update validation.
- Consider whether the disk is showing symptoms such as repeated read errors, file-system warnings or unusual clicking. Microsoft recommends checking the hard drive for installation errors; resolve an obvious disk-health problem before repeatedly attempting an update.
Retry the operation after correcting an obvious basic problem. If it still fails, move to Windows’ built-in troubleshooting.
3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
In Windows 8, open Control Panel, search for Troubleshooting, and choose the Windows Update troubleshooting option when it is available. Let the tool complete its checks and apply the changes it recommends. Read the result instead of making registry edits based on a generic web list. If the troubleshooter reports that it could not repair an item, note that result and continue to the cache and component checks below.
4. Reset downloaded update data when the failure points to the cache
Update files and their metadata are held in the SoftwareDistribution folder. If a download is incomplete or its metadata is inconsistent, stopping the relevant services and renaming the folder gives Windows a clean location to build. Renaming is preferable to deleting because the old folder remains available for recovery until you decide it is no longer needed.
Open an elevated Command Prompt: from the Start screen, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator. Run these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start bits
net start wuauserv
The stop commands must report that the services have stopped before you rename their working folders. If a rename reports that a file is in use, close Windows Update and other installers, restart the computer, open an elevated Command Prompt again and repeat the sequence. If the old folder name already exists, choose a different new name such as SoftwareDistribution.previous rather than overwriting it.
Restart Windows after the services are running, then check for updates or rerun setup. Windows will recreate the renamed folders. The first scan can take longer because update metadata has to be downloaded again.
5. Repair the component store with DISM
If the update or installation still fails, repair the Windows component store before checking protected system files. Microsoft explains that DISM supplies files needed to repair corrupted files. In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Allow the operation to finish. It can pause for a while at one percentage; do not close the window simply because progress appears slow. The /Online switch targets the running Windows installation. /Restorehealth asks DISM to detect component-store corruption and repair it using an available repair source.
If Windows Update cannot provide the repair files, DISM can use a running Windows installation, a network side-by-side folder or Windows installation media such as a DVD or removable drive as an alternate source. The source must match the installed system’s edition and architecture. A source from a different edition, language or system generation can fail or repair the wrong component. Verify the media’s authenticity and integrity, and do not assume that purchasing media by itself cures 0x80070057.

6. Run System File Checker after DISM
When DISM completes, run System File Checker in the same elevated window:
sfc /scannow
Let SFC reach 100 percent. It checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies with files from the component store that DISM has just repaired. Closing the window early can leave the check incomplete. Read the final message: it may report that no integrity violations were found, that corrupted files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. Record that result for escalation if the update still fails.
7. Retry and capture the exact failure
Restart Windows after the repairs, then retry the same update, upgrade or installation. If 0x80070057 returns, stop repeating the same sequence. Record the failed update number or installer name, the exact operation, the DISM and SFC results, and any log or troubleshooter details shown on screen. That context lets Microsoft Support or the relevant software vendor investigate the correct component instead of treating the code as a standalone diagnosis.
Windows 8 network-share effective-access failure
There is a distinct, documented Windows 8/8.1 problem that can produce 0x80070057 when Explorer tries to display a user’s effective access to a file or folder on a non-Microsoft SMB 3.0 server over a UNC path such as \serversharefolder. In this case, the server returns a security descriptor whose Owner field is NULL. Windows cannot process that descriptor for the effective-access display and reports that the parameter is incorrect.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWorkaround: map the share to a drive letter
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Choose Computer on the ribbon, then Map network drive.
- Select an unused drive letter, enter the share path, and provide credentials if Windows requests them. Use the same account that needs the effective-access check.
- Open the mapped drive, locate the file or folder, and repeat the effective-access operation from that drive-letter path rather than the original UNC path.
Mapping changes how Windows reaches the share; it does not alter the server’s security descriptor or grant additional permissions. If the check still fails, ask the server administrator to inspect the SMB share and its security descriptor.
Do not apply the Windows 8.1 update to Windows 8
Microsoft released an update for this particular effective-access issue on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. The support guidance explicitly says that update does not apply to Windows 8. Do not download or force-install it on an original Windows 8 system. For Windows 8, use the drive-letter workaround and verify the server configuration instead.

Backup or restore
Capture whether the code appears while creating an image, selecting a destination, restoring files or validating a backup. Check the destination path, available space and the backup application’s own logs. The update-cache and DISM sequence is not a universal backup repair; running it first can consume time without addressing the parameter supplied to the backup program.
Disk partitioning
Record the disk number, partition action and whether the disk is internal, removable or presented by a storage enclosure. Avoid deleting or recreating partitions merely because 0x80070057 appears. A partition change is destructive if it is performed on the wrong disk, so use the storage tool’s documentation and confirm a current backup before making changes.
Application installation
Note the application’s name and version, the installer source, the destination folder and whether the installer was started with administrative rights. Obtain a clean installer from the software publisher, verify that it supports Windows 8, and use the publisher’s error-specific procedure. A system-wide cache reset or registry change is not justified when the code is confined to one application’s parameter validation.
Choosing the next step
| Action | Best match | Intrusiveness | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart and retry | One-time update or setup failure | Low | Fully reversible |
| Check free space, connection, clock and disk symptoms | Any update or installation that may lack prerequisites | Low | Fully reversible |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Windows Update problems when the Windows 8 tool is available | Low | Usually reversible; review its report |
Rename SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 after stopping services |
Downloaded update data or metadata appears damaged | Moderate | High; old folders remain until removed |
| DISM followed by SFC | Suspected component-store or protected-file corruption | Moderate | Repair operations are less reversible than a restart; wait for completion |
| Matching installation media as a DISM source | DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update | Moderate | Non-destructive when used as a source; edition and architecture must match |
| Map an SMB share to a drive letter | Effective-access error on a non-Microsoft SMB 3.0 server | Low | Disconnect the mapped drive when finished |
| Registry edits or an operating-system reinstall | Only after a documented, operation-specific procedure | High | Lower; use only with a backup and a clear reason |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating the code as a complete diagnosis: the same number covers several operations, so identify the failing task first.
- Mixing Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 instructions: the documented SMB update is not a Windows 8 fix.
- Running SFC before DISM: Microsoft’s sequence places DISM first so SFC has a sound component store to draw from.
- Stopping a scan early: allow DISM and SFC to finish; for SFC, wait for 100 percent and read the final result.
- Deleting update folders while services are active: stop Windows Update and BITS, rename the folders, then start the services again.
- Using mismatched repair media: edition, architecture and source integrity matter when DISM needs installation files.
- Applying random registry files: registry changes are harder to undo and are not established as a general 0x80070057 fix.
- Repeating unrelated fixes: once the same operation fails after the appropriate sequence, preserve its details and escalate with context.
What to provide when you need support
Prepare a concise failure record:
- Windows edition and whether it is Windows 8 or Windows 8.1;
- the exact operation and screen that produced 0x80070057;
- the update number, installer name or application version;
- available free space and any disk-health symptoms;
- whether the troubleshooter ran and what it reported;
- the final DISM and SFC messages, if you used those tools;
- whether the failure involved a UNC network path, a mapped drive or a non-Microsoft SMB 3.0 server; and
- the relevant Windows or application log entries, with their timestamps.
This evidence separates an update-data problem from component corruption, a version-specific SMB defect or an application-specific invalid parameter. It also prevents support staff from recommending a Windows 8.1 package for Windows 8 or asking you to repeat steps that have already completed.
