Error 0x80070032 does not have one universal fix. The right repair depends on where it appears: Windows Hello sign-in, Windows Update, an app or Store installation, or a Windows upgrade. Start by recording the exact screen and operation, then follow the matching procedure below. The spelling “ox80070032” is a common typo; the hexadecimal Windows code is 0x80070032.
Identify where 0x80070032 occurs
The code alone is not enough to diagnose the problem. A Microsoft Q&A case from 2017–2018 describes it during Windows sign-in, especially when a Windows Hello PIN repeatedly fails. Microsoft also documents separate troubleshooting for Windows Update and upgrade or installation failures. Those situations can display the same code while requiring different repairs.

| Where the code appears | First action | Risk and access | System-state change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Hello PIN or sign-in | Use the account password or another sign-in method, then reset the PIN | Low risk; you must have another way to sign in | Changes the Windows Hello PIN only |
| Windows Update | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check again | Low risk; administrator access may be requested | Repairs update components; cache deletion is a later step |
| Update that remains stuck | Stop Windows Update and clear the SoftwareDistribution contents | Moderate risk; use an administrator account and follow the order exactly | Removes downloaded update files so Windows can recreate them |
| Upgrade or installation | Disconnect nonessential hardware, run System File Checker, and try a clean boot | Moderate; a clean boot temporarily changes startup behavior | Changes startup services and checks protected system files |
| Microsoft Store or another app installation | Record the app and operation before choosing a repair | Varies; do not assume an update-cache repair applies | Not established by the code alone |
Fix 0x80070032 when a Windows 10 PIN will not work
If the message appears at the lock screen or sign-in screen, treat it first as an authentication problem rather than an update problem. The Microsoft Q&A report describes repeated PIN prompts and a message equivalent to “Something happened—try another login authentication method.”

Sign in with your password or another method
- At the Windows sign-in screen, select Sign-in options.
- Choose the password option or another method that is available, such as a security key or fingerprint. Enter the credentials for the account you normally use.
- If you can sign in successfully, do not keep retrying the broken PIN. Continue with the reset procedure below.
If no alternative method works, confirm that you are using the correct account and that the keyboard layout is what you expect. A PIN is different from the account password. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, an administrator may control which sign-in methods can be reset; contact that administrator rather than deleting account data.
Remove and recreate the Windows Hello PIN
- Open Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Under the Windows Hello PIN section, choose I forgot my PIN or Remove, depending on which control Windows displays.
- Authenticate with the account password if Windows asks you to verify your identity.
- Follow the prompts to remove the old PIN and create a new one. Use a PIN you can enter reliably; the PIN is for this device and is not the same as your Microsoft account password.
- Restart Windows and test the new PIN at the sign-in screen.
Resetting the PIN is a targeted, reversible settings change. It does not repair Windows Update, so do not proceed to update-cache instructions unless the code also appears during an update.
If the PIN reset controls are missing
First sign in with the password or another available method and restart once. Then return to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. If the controls are still unavailable, record whether the device is joined to a work or school account and whether another administrator manages it. Those policies can prevent a local PIN reset, and repeatedly deleting credential folders without knowing the account policy can create a larger sign-in problem.
Fix 0x80070032 during Windows Update
For an update failure, use the built-in Windows 10 troubleshooter before deleting any files. This path applies to Windows 10’s documented Settings layout.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Allow the diagnostic process to finish and apply any repair it offers.
- Restart the PC, even if the troubleshooter says no change was necessary.
- After restarting, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Let the update process complete without repeatedly forcing a shutdown. If the same code returns, note the update name or number and continue to the cache procedure.
Reset the Windows Update download cache
A damaged or incomplete download in the Windows Update cache can keep an update from being evaluated correctly. Clearing the cache removes downloaded update files; Windows can download them again. This is more invasive than running the troubleshooter, so preserve any logs you may need and close your work before starting.
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator. Select Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click the result, and choose Run as administrator. - Stop the Windows Update service by entering
net stop wuauserv. Wait for the confirmation that the service has stopped. - Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If a file is in use, verify that the Windows Update service stopped; do not force-delete unrelated system files. - Return to the elevated Command Prompt and enter
net start wuauserv. - Restart Windows.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter again using Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update.
- Open Windows Update and select Check for updates.
The first update check after a cache reset can take longer because Windows must rebuild its download data. If the code persists, retain the update history, the exact update number, and any available Windows Update logs before repeating the deletion.

If the troubleshooter and cache reset do not help, verify that Windows Update services are enabled and running. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and inspect the Windows Update service. It should not be permanently disabled. If the PC is managed by an organization, a policy may control this setting; ask the administrator before changing it. Do not use registry cleaners or random service “optimization” scripts, because they can alter components unrelated to the error.
Fix 0x80070032 during a Windows 10 upgrade or installation
An upgrade failure is broader than a routine monthly update. Microsoft’s general upgrade guidance recommends reducing hardware and software variables first. These steps do not establish that the code has one specific root cause; they remove common sources of interference and check for damaged system files.

Disconnect nonessential external hardware
- Shut down the computer.
- Disconnect nonessential printers, USB accessories, docks, external drives, card readers, and similar devices.
- Leave connected only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and any hardware required to start the computer.
- Start Windows and retry the upgrade.
Reconnect devices one at a time after the upgrade succeeds. This makes it easier to identify a device that interrupts setup.
Run System File Checker
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Do not close the window while the scan is running.
- Restart the PC when the scan finishes, then retry the upgrade.
System File Checker examines protected Windows files. Its result may say that no integrity violations were found, that damaged files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. Record the message; it is useful when escalating the problem.
Perform a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with nonessential third-party services and startup programs disabled temporarily. It helps determine whether background software is interfering with setup.
- Press
Windows key + R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first prevents you from disabling core Windows services accidentally.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable nonessential startup items in Task Manager, close Task Manager, and select OK in System Configuration.
- Restart and retry the upgrade.
- After testing, open
msconfigagain and return Windows to Normal startup, then restart. Leaving a clean boot in place can prevent security, backup, or hardware utilities from starting normally.
Confirm update services are available
Before another upgrade attempt, open services.msc and confirm that the Windows Update service is enabled and running. If an organization manages the computer, its policy may intentionally restrict updates. Capture the service status and the exact setup message rather than repeatedly rerunning the installer.
If 0x80070032 appears while installing an app
The code can also appear during a Microsoft Store or other application installation, but the available evidence does not establish one universal Store repair for it. Do not apply the Windows Hello PIN reset or delete the Windows Update cache merely because the same hexadecimal number appears.
- Record the app name, installation source, exact wording, and whether the failure occurs during download, installation, or first launch.
- Check whether Windows Update is also failing. If it is, follow the Windows Update section; if not, keep the app-installation symptom separate.
- Restart Windows and retry once, noting whether the error is repeatable.
- If the failure continues, preserve the app name and error details for the app publisher or Microsoft support. Those details are more useful than the code alone.
Because the trigger is different, a fix that changes sign-in credentials or update-cache files can waste time and may remove information needed to diagnose the application problem.
What to do when none of the fixes works
Capture evidence before escalating
- Photograph or copy the complete error message, including any secondary code.
- Record the time, operation, update number or app name, and Windows build.
- Keep the Windows Update history and any troubleshooter result.
- Write down whether password sign-in, a clean boot, SFC, or the cache reset changed the symptom.
- Avoid repeating destructive steps, such as deleting the cache, until you have preserved the information you need.
Consider Windows 10’s support status
Microsoft’s current support notice states: “After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.” That date has passed. A persistent update or upgrade problem should therefore be considered alongside the supported upgrade path, not treated as a reason to keep an unsupported installation indefinitely.
Before making a major change, verify hardware compatibility, back up important files, and confirm which applications and drivers you need. If the computer cannot meet the requirements of a supported Windows release, document the limitation and seek a supported plan from the device manufacturer or organization that manages it.
Quick Recap
A safe order of operations
- Identify the trigger and record the exact context.
- For sign-in, use the password or another method, then reset the PIN under Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- For Windows Update, run the built-in troubleshooter, restart, and check for updates.
- If the update remains stuck, stop Windows Update, clear the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, start the service, restart, and run the troubleshooter again. - For an upgrade, disconnect nonessential hardware, run
sfc /scannow, try a clean boot, and verify update services. - For an app installation, keep the app-specific evidence separate and avoid unrelated system changes.
- If the problem returns, preserve logs and evaluate a supported operating-system upgrade before considering a reset.
