Treat it as an undocumented Windows update or installation failure rather than assuming it identifies one particular component. First record the complete message and where it appeared, then work through Microsoft’s low-risk checks, built-in troubleshooting, image and system-file repair, update-component reset, driver and disk checks, and recovery options. The same workflow applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10, although Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update support, technical assistance, or security fixes after October 14, 2025.
What error 0x80008655 means
There is no authoritative Microsoft definition for 0x80008655 in the public error references reviewed here, and an exact-code search did not identify a documented component. The number alone therefore cannot tell you whether the failure came from Windows Update, an in-place upgrade, activation, setup, or another application.

That uncertainty matters: applying a fix intended for a guessed cause can waste time or make recovery harder. Use the screen, program and action that produced the code to choose the next diagnostic step. Do not treat the code as proof of malware, a failing hard drive or a particular driver.

1. Preserve the diagnostic context
Before changing anything, write down:
- The full text displayed around
0x80008655, including any second code or named file. - The exact location: Windows Update, Windows Setup, Activation, Microsoft Store, a driver installer or another program.
- The action that triggered it, such as downloading an update, restarting, upgrading Windows or installing an application.
- The Windows edition and build shown by pressing
Windows + R, enteringwinver, and pressing Enter. - Whether the computer can still start normally, restart, connect to the internet and open Settings.
Take a photograph or screenshot if the message appears only briefly. This information is essential because the code is undocumented in the sources reviewed.

2. Start with Microsoft’s low-risk checks
Disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down the computer and unplug devices that are not required to boot: printers, scanners, USB storage, external disks, card readers, docking stations and similar accessories. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display and network connection attached. A setup or update can fail while probing an attached device or its driver.
Restart and retry once
Restart Windows normally, reconnect only essential hardware, and try the same update or installation again. If the error returns, do not repeatedly force restarts; continue with the diagnostic steps below.
Confirm update services are running
Press Windows + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. Locate Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), and Cryptographic Services. Their startup settings can vary by Windows version, but each should be able to run when Windows Update checks for updates. Right-click a stopped service and choose Start; if it is running, choose Restart. Do not disable these services permanently.
3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Troubleshoot.
- Choose Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any recommended repair, restart the computer, and select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security, then Troubleshoot.
- Choose Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply the result, restart, and check for updates again.
The troubleshooter can correct common service, configuration and cache problems, but it cannot identify an undocumented code with certainty. If it reports that no problem was found, continue rather than repeating it indefinitely.

4. Repair the Windows image and protected files
Corruption in the component store or protected system files can prevent an update or setup from completing. Use an administrator Command Prompt:
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthDISM may appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes. Do not close the window while it is working. When it completes, run:
sfc /scannowSystem File Checker verifies protected files and replaces damaged copies when possible. Restart Windows after both commands, then retry the operation that produced 0x80008655. If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, note the complete message; repeated SFC runs will not supply a missing repair source.

5. Reset Windows Update components
Use this procedure when the troubleshooter and file repairs do not clear a Windows Update failure. It renames the update download and catalog folders so Windows can create clean replacements. Renaming is reversible, but existing update-cache data will no longer be used.

- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Stop the transfer, update, application-identity and cryptographic services in this order:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc- Rename the two cache folders:
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.bak- Start the services again in the corresponding order:
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start appidsvc
net start cryptsvc- Restart Windows and check for updates. Windows will rebuild the renamed folders as needed.
If a net stop command says the service is not running, record the message and continue. If a rename reports that a folder is in use, restart and repeat the procedure before opening other applications.
6. Check disk errors and available space
Windows needs working storage for downloaded packages, temporary files and rollback data. Remove or move personal files only after backing them up, and keep a reasonable amount of free space on the system drive.
To check the system volume, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
chkdsk /f C:If Windows says the volume is in use, type Y to schedule the check for the next restart, then reboot. Allow the scan to finish. It can take a long time on a large or damaged disk; interrupting it can leave the file system in an uncertain state.

7. Rule out drivers and startup conflicts
Inspect Device Manager
If the computer restarts, shows a stop-style failure, or the error began after hardware changes, press Windows + X and open Device Manager. Expand categories and look for a yellow warning icon. For a device that changed recently, open Properties and read the General and Driver tabs. Microsoft’s recovery guidance includes updating or removing a problematic driver; create a restore point or other backup first when possible.
Do not remove a driver merely because it is old. Focus on devices with a warning, a recent change, or a direct connection to the failed operation, such as storage, display, network or chipset hardware.
Try Safe Mode when normal startup is unstable
From Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, choose Restart now. In the recovery menu select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose a Safe Mode option. If the failure does not occur in Safe Mode, a third-party startup program or driver is a likely contributor; remove the recent change or update it from the hardware maker.

Perform a clean restart
A clean boot starts Windows with Microsoft services and no third-party startup programs. Press Windows + R, enter msconfig, and press Enter. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, choose Disable all, then open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager to disable enabled third-party startup items. Restart and retry the update. If it succeeds, re-enable items in groups and restart between groups to identify the conflict. In msconfig, return to Normal startup when testing is complete.
8. Use recovery options when the failure persists
System Restore
If restore points exist, open Settings > System > Recovery (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery (Windows 10), enter the advanced recovery environment, and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Select a point created before the failure. System Restore can remove drivers and applications installed after that point, but it normally leaves personal files in place; review the affected-program list before confirming.
Other Windows recovery choices
Windows Recovery Environment may also offer Startup Repair, Uninstall Updates or Reset this PC, depending on the failure and edition. Read each screen carefully. A reset can remove applications and, depending on the option, personal files, so back up documents and verify that you can reinstall required software before proceeding.
Clean installation as a final software path
A clean installation replaces the existing Windows installation and is disruptive. It can erase applications, settings and files on the selected drive. Use it only after backups, confirmation of hardware compatibility, and collection of the drivers and license information you will need afterward. It is not the first response to an undocumented code.

Escalate when the complete message remains unexplained, the machine cannot complete recovery, disk checks report physical problems, or the error appears across multiple clean installation attempts. Provide the recorded winver result, full error text, time of failure, update or setup history, and the output of DISM, SFC and CHKDSK. Windows 10 reached the end of free Windows Update support, technical assistance and security fixes on October 14, 2025; continued use should therefore be weighed against moving to a supported Windows release when the hardware permits.

Work from the top of the table downward. The later options affect more of the system and should follow backups and documentation rather than replace basic diagnosis.
