Error 0x80008459 is not identified in the Microsoft support references reviewed for Windows 11 or Windows 10. That means the code alone does not prove that Windows Update, activation, a driver, or any other component is responsible. The reliable fix starts by recording the complete message and the operation that produced it, then choosing the matching Windows troubleshooting path. The steps below cover update failures, installations, activation, unexpected restarts and driver-related symptoms without pretending there is a code-specific remedy.

What error 0x80008459 means

Microsoft’s published Windows troubleshooting and activation pages do not define 0x80008459 or assign it to a particular subsystem. A partial message, a third-party installer, or a transcription error can make an otherwise familiar code appear different. Treat the hexadecimal value as a clue, not a diagnosis.

Before changing anything, write down:

  • The complete error text, including any title, file name or secondary code.
  • The app or installer that displayed it.
  • What Windows was doing: downloading updates, installing an update, upgrading to a feature release, installing an application, activating Windows, or restarting.
  • Whether the failure happens once or after every restart or update check.
  • Your Windows edition and build. Press Windows logo key + R, enter winver, and press Enter.

That context determines which branch below is appropriate. Do not delete system folders or edit the registry merely because a web page associates this number with a particular component; the authoritative material reviewed here does not support such an association.

First response: run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter

If the code appeared while Windows was checking, downloading or installing an update, begin with Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter. Microsoft says it can automatically run diagnostics and attempt to fix most update problems.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Choose Other troubleshooters.
  4. Find Windows Update and select Run. If Windows offers the Get Help experience instead, follow its diagnostic prompts.
  5. Allow the checks and any offered repair to finish. Restart the computer even if the troubleshooter reports that it made no change.
  6. After the restart, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Select Windows Update, then Run the troubleshooter. Windows may instead direct you to Get Help.
  4. Complete the diagnostics, restart, and check for updates again.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A troubleshooting success does not extend that support lifecycle; if the computer is eligible, plan a move to Windows 11 for ongoing supported security updates.

Prepare an upgrade or installation attempt

When 0x80008459 appears during a Windows upgrade or another installation, reduce variables before trying again. These steps are reversible and follow Microsoft’s general installation guidance.

Disconnect nonessential hardware

Shut down the computer and unplug devices that are not required to boot or complete the installation: USB storage, printers, scanners, docks, card readers and other external drives. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display and network connection attached as needed. Reconnect devices after the installation succeeds, one at a time, so a failing device or driver can be identified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check permissions

Use an account with administrator rights. If the installer is a downloaded program, close other applications and start it using its own documented “Run as administrator” option when available. Do not grant administrator access to an unknown file simply because it displays this code; verify that the installer came from the software publisher.

Temporarily pause third-party antivirus during the installation

Microsoft’s upgrade guidance includes temporarily disabling antivirus software during an installation attempt. Pause only for the time required to run the trusted installer, keep the computer disconnected from untrusted networks or files where practical, and turn protection back on immediately after the attempt. This is a diagnostic step, not a recommendation to operate without protection.

Keep adequate free disk space

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping approximately 10% to 15% of the system drive free. The operating system and applications need space for swap files and other work during an update or recovery. In File Explorer, open This PC and inspect the Windows drive. Remove or move files you can identify safely, empty the Recycle Bin, and use Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10) to review temporary files. Do not remove personal files or unknown system folders just to reach a target.

Choose the branch that matches the trigger

Where the code appears Best first path Safe Mode normally required? Reversibility
Windows Update download or installation Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, check for updates No Diagnostics and a restart are reversible
Windows feature upgrade or installation Disconnect nonessential hardware, check permissions, temporarily pause third-party antivirus, retry No Hardware disconnection and antivirus pause are reversible
Windows activation Confirm edition with winver, then run Activation troubleshooter No Troubleshooter does not change hardware
Unexpected restart or stop-code-like screen Safe Mode, Device Manager, updates or driver rollback, then recovery options Sometimes Driver rollback and System Restore can be reversed

The table is a decision aid, not evidence that 0x80008459 belongs to any one category. If the full message points elsewhere, follow that application’s documented recovery procedure.

If Windows keeps restarting or shows a stop-code-style failure

A restart loop or blue-screen-like display requires a different sequence from an ordinary update error. Microsoft recommends removing recently added hardware, trying Safe Mode, checking Device Manager, installing updates and using System Restore when appropriate.

Remove a recent change

Power off and disconnect hardware added shortly before the failures began. If Windows becomes stable, reconnect one device at a time. A repeat failure after reconnecting one device is useful evidence for its driver or firmware, but it still does not prove that the hexadecimal code identifies that device.

Enter Safe Mode

From the Windows sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. After the recovery menu appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select the Safe Mode option. If Windows cannot reach the sign-in screen, interrupting startup can cause Windows Recovery Environment to appear after repeated failed boots; use that environment’s Startup Settings when offered.

Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers. If the failure disappears there, a recently installed driver, startup program or service becomes more likely. Safe Mode is a diagnostic state; it is not a permanent repair.

Inspect Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Look for a warning icon, an unknown device or a category that matches the recently added hardware.
  3. Open the device’s Properties and read the Device status message.
  4. Use Update driver if a known, compatible driver is available from the device or computer manufacturer.
  5. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver when that option is available.

Restart normally after each driver change and test the operation that originally failed. Avoid installing a random driver package that merely mentions 0x80008459.

Install pending Windows updates

Once Windows is stable enough to operate, return to Settings > Windows Update, install available updates and restart. For Windows 10, remember that general support ended on October 14, 2025; availability of updates can depend on the edition and any organization-specific servicing arrangement.

If the code appears during activation

Activation errors must be handled separately from Windows Update errors. First confirm the installed edition and build with winver; an activation key or digital entitlement must correspond to the edition installed.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. On Windows 11, select System > Activation. On Windows 10, select Update & Security > Activation.
  3. Run the Activation troubleshooter when it is offered.
  4. Follow the prompts to resolve an edition mismatch or reconnect a digital license.

Microsoft publishes lists of recognized activation codes. Its guidance says that an activation code not listed should be referred to customer support. Because 0x80008459 is not identified in the activation material reviewed here, record the complete activation message and contact Microsoft rather than repeatedly changing the product key.

Use recovery options when the failure started after a change

System Restore

If the computer worked before a driver, application or system change, System Restore can return system files and settings to an earlier restore point without removing personal documents. Open Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore, then choose a restore point dated before the failure. Read the list of affected programs before confirming. A restore point may not exist, and it cannot correct every cause.

Other Windows recovery choices

When System Restore is unavailable or unsuccessful, Windows Recovery Environment may offer Startup Repair, Uninstall Updates or Reset options. Read each screen carefully: uninstalling an update removes a recent update, while a reset can remove applications and, depending on the choice, personal files. Back up important files before using a destructive option. These recovery tools address the operating system state; they do not establish what 0x80008459 means.

What not to do

  • Do not assume the code is a Windows Update, activation or driver code without the surrounding message.
  • Do not delete the Windows Update cache, system DLLs or registry entries based on an unverified “fix.”
  • Do not leave antivirus protection disabled after an installation test.
  • Do not reconnect every peripheral at once after an upgrade; add devices individually.
  • Do not keep retrying an activation key when Microsoft’s published list does not identify the code.
  • Do not call a generic cleaner or driver package a guaranteed repair. No code-specific remedy is documented for this value.

When to escalate to Microsoft support

Escalate after the matching troubleshooter and recovery steps fail, or sooner if the computer cannot boot, activation remains blocked, or the error appears with data-loss symptoms. Provide the complete message, the result of winver, the Windows edition, the operation that triggered the code, the time it first appeared, recent hardware or driver changes, and the steps already attempted. Include relevant Windows Update or setup logs if Microsoft requests them. This information is more useful than the hexadecimal value alone because the code is not defined in the authoritative references reviewed.
