Error 0x80008406 is not defined in the Microsoft documentation reviewed for Windows 10 or Windows 11, so it should not be assigned a made-up cause such as a specific driver, update, or hardware failure. Start with Microsoft’s supported repair sequence: run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt, then run sfc /scannow. If DISM cannot obtain repair files, use a correctly matched Windows installation source. If the error remains, preserve your data and escalate with the exact symptom, Windows build, and repair logs.
What error 0x80008406 means
The hexadecimal code 0x80008406 is currently undocumented in the authoritative Microsoft pages checked for this guide. That means the number alone does not identify a particular Windows component, update, driver, disk, or hardware fault. Treating it as a definitive diagnosis can send you toward the wrong fix.

The useful starting point is the event that surrounds the code. Write down whether it appears while Windows starts, while an update is installing, when an application opens, during shutdown, or at another repeatable point. Record the complete message, not only the hexadecimal number. Also note whether the same action fails every time or only intermittently. Those details determine which Windows repair or recovery path is sensible after the general system-file check.

Before you run a repair command
Capture the symptom
- Copy the full error text or take a screenshot.
- Note the exact action that triggers it and whether the failure occurs at startup, update, application launch, or shutdown.
- Write down your Windows edition (for example, Home or Pro), whether it is Windows 10 or Windows 11, and the installed build number.
- Record any recent change that preceded the problem, such as a failed update, software installation, or recovery operation, without assuming that change is the cause.
Protect important data
DISM and SFC are built-in repair commands, but persistent Windows corruption may eventually require a supported recovery or in-place repair option. Back up documents, photos, browser data, and other files you cannot replace before moving to those broader recovery steps. If the computer is unstable, copy the most important data first to an external drive or another trusted location.
Use an elevated Command Prompt
Both commands must be run with administrator rights. In Windows 11 or Windows 10:
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt in the results and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt. The window title should indicate that it is an administrator session.
Do not use a normal, non-elevated prompt. If Windows refuses the elevation request, sign in with an account that has administrator permission or ask the device administrator to perform the steps.

Use the standard online repair command
In the administrator Command Prompt, enter this command exactly and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
/Online tells DISM to work on the running Windows installation. /Cleanup-image selects the Windows image servicing operation, and /Restorehealth asks DISM to detect and repair corruption in the component store. Microsoft says DISM normally obtains the files it needs through Windows Update, so the computer should have a working network connection and access to Windows Update while this command runs.
The operation can take several minutes. Progress may appear to pause for a while; do not close the window, power off the computer, or interrupt the command merely because the percentage has not changed. Wait for DISM to finish and return to the command prompt. Keep the final result available if you later need support.
Why DISM comes before SFC
SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It may need a sound component store from which to obtain replacement files, which is why Microsoft’s sequence places DISM first. Running SFC before DISM can leave SFC without the files it needs to complete a repair.

When DISM has completed, remain in the same administrator Command Prompt and run:
sfc /scannow
SFC checks protected Windows files and repairs missing or corrupted files when possible. Let the scan reach 100 percent before closing the window. A repair result may ask you to restart Windows; restart when requested. Even when no restart is requested, restarting before testing the original action gives Windows a clean opportunity to load repaired files.
Test the original failure
After the restart, repeat the action that produced 0x80008406. If it no longer occurs, keep the recorded command results in case the issue returns. If the same message appears, do not assume that the code has a single known meaning; continue with the branch that matches the failure context and collect the evidence listed below.
What to do when DISM cannot repair the image
Use an alternate repair source
DISM normally relies on Windows Update. If the Windows Update client is broken or cannot supply suitable files, Microsoft documents an alternate source form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a suitable Windows installation source on your computer or attached media. The source should match the installed Windows edition, language, and build as closely as possible. A random ISO, a source for a different edition, or media from a substantially different build can fail to repair the image or create a new mismatch. Do not guess at a source simply to make the command run.
The /LimitAccess switch prevents DISM from contacting Windows Update and makes it use the specified source. Use this form when you have a known-good, matching source and Windows Update is not providing the required files. If you do not have matching media, it is safer to stop and obtain appropriate installation media through a supported channel than to point DISM at an unrelated image.
Run SFC again after a successful source-based repair
If the alternate-source DISM command completes a repair, run sfc /scannow again from the elevated Command Prompt. SFC should still follow DISM; the source change affects where DISM gets files, not the order of the Microsoft repair sequence. Restart if requested, then test the action that triggers the code.

Choose the next step by symptom
If 0x80008406 appears during Windows Update
First complete the DISM-then-SFC sequence above. Microsoft’s update-repair guidance also uses an administrator Command Prompt for these checks. Retry the update only after both commands have finished and Windows has restarted.
If the update still fails, use the Windows Update troubleshooting and recovery options available for your Windows version, and preserve the complete update message. The hexadecimal code is not enough to identify which update operation failed. Note the update name or knowledge-base identifier shown by Windows, the date and time of the failure, and whether the failure rolls back or leaves Windows waiting for another restart.
If it appears while an application opens
Write down the application’s name, version if shown, and whether other applications open normally. Run the system-file sequence before changing application files. If only one application triggers the error after Windows files have been checked, the application vendor’s repair or reinstall procedure may be more relevant than another round of DISM commands. Keep the full Windows message and any application crash details for that vendor or Microsoft support.
If it appears at startup or shutdown
Record whether Windows eventually reaches the desktop, restarts repeatedly, or shuts down only after displaying the message. If you can reach the desktop, back up important data and run DISM followed by SFC from an elevated prompt. If Windows cannot remain usable long enough to do that, move to Microsoft’s supported recovery options rather than repeatedly interrupting startup.
If it follows a driver or hardware change
The code itself does not prove that a driver or hardware device is responsible. Note the device, the date of the change, and whether disconnecting the device changes the symptom. Use the device manufacturer’s or Microsoft’s supported driver-recovery guidance only after you have captured that information; avoid installing unrelated driver packages simply because the hexadecimal code is unfamiliar.

Collect evidence before escalating
Because Microsoft does not assign a published definition to 0x80008406 in the sources reviewed, support staff need context rather than the number alone. Prepare:
- The complete error message and a screenshot, if possible.
- The trigger: startup, update, application launch, shutdown, or another action.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, edition, and build number.
- Whether the standard DISM command completed, failed, or could not obtain source files.
- Whether the alternate-source command was attempted and the exact source path used.
- The SFC result and whether Windows requested a restart.
- The date and time of each failure, plus any update name or application name involved.
- Relevant CBS and DISM logs produced by the repair attempts.
Do not edit the logs before sending them to support. If they contain account names or other personal information, ask the support channel how to redact sensitive lines without removing the error context it needs.
When to use Windows recovery or support
Escalate when DISM and SFC both complete but the same, repeatable failure remains; when DISM cannot repair the image even with a correctly matched source; or when Windows is too unstable to complete the commands. Back up important data first, then use Microsoft’s supported recovery or in-place repair options appropriate to your edition and build. If you are unsure which option preserves the setup you need, contact Microsoft support with the evidence above instead of selecting a destructive reset at random.
