Error 0x80006844 is not defined in Microsoft’s current Windows 10 or Windows 11 error references, so there is no verified, code-specific registry edit or download. The reliable approach is to identify which component displayed it, then follow Microsoft’s supported update and installation troubleshooting sequence: run the Windows Update troubleshooter, remove peripheral and software conflicts, repair the disk and system files, and capture logs if the code remains. Do not treat a random web-page explanation as authoritative unless it matches the originating application or log.
What error 0x80006844 means
Microsoft’s documented Windows Update error table does not list the exact string 0x80006844. A legacy SimHQ forum page contains the string inside a hardware/PCI diagnostic dump, but it does not establish a Windows 10 or Windows 11 consumer cause or a tested remedy. In practical terms, the hexadecimal text alone is not enough to tell whether Windows Update, Windows Setup, an application, a driver installer, or firmware produced the message.

That uncertainty changes how you should troubleshoot. A code copied from a Windows Update screen calls for update repair steps; the same characters displayed by a printer utility, game launcher, or hardware diagnostic may require that program’s own logs and support instructions. Avoid registry edits, replacement DLL downloads, driver packages from unofficial sites, or claims that one command is a guaranteed fix. None is supported for this exact code without knowing its source.
First identify where the code appeared

Prepare safely before troubleshooting
- Save your work and back up important files. Repair commands normally preserve personal files, but an installation failure can still leave a system unable to start.
- Take a screenshot or photograph showing the complete message, not just
0x80006844. Include the date, time, and action that triggered it. - Write down recent changes such as a new USB device, printer, storage drive, security product, driver, or BIOS update.
- If you plan to remove third-party security software, confirm that you can reinstall it and have any required licence key or account details. Microsoft specifically advises checking this before uninstalling security software.
- Use an account with administrator rights for repair commands and device changes. If a command asks to schedule a check at the next restart, accept it and restart before continuing.
Run the Microsoft-supported fixes in order
1. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter
Microsoft says the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve an error code encountered while downloading and installing Windows updates. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run. Microsoft also directs Windows 11 users to start the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Follow every recommended action, restart when requested, and then return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter. Apply its suggestions, restart, and check for updates again. The troubleshooter diagnoses and changes Windows Update settings; it does not identify an undocumented application-specific meaning for 0x80006844.
2. Disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down or restart with external drives, USB storage, printers, scanners, docks, card readers, and other nonessential peripherals unplugged. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and hardware required to boot. Retry the update or installation. A peripheral can introduce an incompatible driver or keep setup from accessing a device correctly; removing it is a reversible isolation test, not proof that the device caused the code.
After Windows starts, open Device Manager and look for a yellow warning icon. For a device with a warning, note its name and status text. You can try the manufacturer’s current driver, or temporarily remove the device from the update path if it is not needed. Do not install a driver from an unofficial download site, and do not remove a device whose function you need to keep the computer usable without first recording how to restore it. Security suites can intercept update or setup operations. If the failure continues after hardware is disconnected, uninstall a third-party antivirus or security suite temporarily using Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10. Use the product’s own removal utility if its documentation requires one. Keep the product key or account information so you can reinstall it after testing.
Windows Defender can protect the computer while you test the update path. This is a conflict-isolation step, not a claim that security software is the cause. If the update succeeds, reinstall the security product, update it, and contact its publisher if the problem returns. Microsoft’s installation-error guidance describes this precaution at the same official support page.

4. Check the disk and repair Windows system files
These commands require an elevated Command Prompt. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and approve the permission prompt. Run the commands in this order:

Check the Windows volume:
chkdsk /f C:If Windows says the volume is in use and asks whether to schedule the check for the next restart, type

Repair the Windows image:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for the operation to reach completion. Closing the window early can leave the repair unfinished.

Verify protected system files:
sfc /scannowLet the scan reach 100 percent. Restart Windows when it completes, then try Windows Update or the installation again.
chkdsk checks and repairs file-system problems on the specified volume; DISM repairs the Windows image currently running; and System File Checker checks protected Windows files. They repair general disk or system corruption, not a documented meaning for 0x80006844. Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guidance lists this sequence in Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.

5. Use a clean boot to isolate software conflicts
If the code still appears, perform a clean boot and retry the same operation. A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, which helps determine whether a background service is interfering.

Press
Windows key + R, entermsconfig, and press Enter to open System Configuration. -
On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services. Record the remaining services, then disable the non-Microsoft services for the test.

Open the Startup tab and use Open Task Manager to disable enabled third-party startup items. Close Task Manager and apply the System Configuration changes.

Restart and attempt the update or installation once. If it succeeds, a disabled service or startup program is a likely conflict. Re-enable items in small groups, restarting between tests, until the conflicting item is identified.

When testing is complete, return System Configuration to Normal startup and re-enable the services and startup items you need. A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent performance setting.
Microsoft describes clean restart troubleshooting as a way to isolate software conflicts that block Windows upgrades or installations in its upgrade and installation guidance.
6. Retry the exact operation and note the result
Reconnect one peripheral at a time only after the update or installation has completed. If the failure returns immediately after reconnecting a particular device, record that relationship and investigate the device driver through the manufacturer or Windows Update. If the failure returns when a particular security or startup service is enabled, record that service and contact its publisher.
Do not repeatedly run destructive installation options simply to make the message disappear. A reset or clean installation can remove applications and data and should be considered only after backups, recovery media, and the originating logs have been reviewed.
Choose the next branch based on where the error appears
Windows Update only
Repeat the troubleshooter, hardware isolation, security-software test, disk and system-file repairs, and clean boot in that order. If other updates install successfully but one update fails, record the update’s name or KB number; that information is more actionable than the generic hexadecimal string.
Windows upgrade or installation
Disconnect peripherals before starting setup, check Device Manager, and use a clean boot. Record whether setup fails during compatibility checking, copying files, the first restart, or the final configuration stage. The stage and setup log entry can distinguish a driver or hardware conflict from damaged installation files.
An application, Store package, or vendor utility
Windows repairs may not address an application-defined code. Capture the application name and version, reproduce the failure once, and save its log or the related Event Viewer entry. Use the application publisher’s support instructions only after confirming that the code is generated by that application.
A driver or hardware diagnostic
Photograph the complete diagnostic screen, note the device model and recent changes, and preserve the diagnostic log. Avoid replacing drivers or firmware solely because the number resembles a Windows error; the surrounding diagnostic text is needed to select a compatible package.

Capture evidence before escalating
If the code remains after the sequence, stop making speculative changes and collect evidence. Save the full screenshot, exact time, Windows edition and build, update or installer name, connected hardware, and the step at which the failure occurred. Export or copy the related Event Viewer entry and any Windows Setup or application log that records the failure. Include the results of the troubleshooter, chkdsk, DISM, and SFC rather than reporting only that they were run.
This evidence lets Microsoft, the application publisher, or the hardware manufacturer determine which component owns the code. Because Microsoft’s reviewed references do not assign a meaning to 0x80006844, a support request that omits the originating screen cannot reliably distinguish an update problem from an unrelated diagnostic message.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That lifecycle date does not diagnose 0x80006844, but it affects whether a Windows 10 computer is eligible for ongoing security and feature updates. If you are troubleshooting Windows 10 after that date, record the edition and support status when contacting Microsoft or the device manufacturer; do not interpret the end-of-support date as the cause of this error.
