That means the number alone does not identify a single repair. The dialog, the operation that triggered it, your Windows build, and any related log or KB number are essential clues.
Start with Microsoft’s built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and try the operation again. If the error remains, repair Windows component files with DISM and System File Checker (SFC). Installation attempts need a separate hardware and compatibility check, while repeated restarts or blue/black screens require the stop-code troubleshooting path. The complete procedures are below.

What error 0x80004958 means
There is no authoritative Microsoft mapping in the available Windows 11/10 update, setup, installation, or stop-code documentation for 0x80004958. It may be shown by different parts of Windows, so treating it as a known Windows Update code can send you down the wrong path. A failed cumulative update, a feature upgrade, an installation rollback, a Microsoft Store or activation dialog, and a crash screen can all present different recovery options.

Identify the trigger before changing anything
Write down these details while the message is still visible. They determine which Microsoft workflow applies and make a support request actionable.
- Trigger: Was Windows downloading or installing an update, performing a feature upgrade, installing Windows, opening Microsoft Store or activation, or recovering from a crash?
- Symptom: Did the operation fail immediately, roll back, restart repeatedly, or end in a blue or black screen?
- Windows edition and build: Open Settings and select System > About to record the edition and build. Keep whether the machine is Windows 11 or Windows 10 with the notes.
- Update identifier: If Update history shows a KB number, copy it exactly. A KB identifier can distinguish one failed update from another even when the displayed error code is the same.
- Recent changes: Note newly attached hardware, drivers, security software, or other software installed immediately before the failure.
- Evidence: Preserve the full dialog text and any relevant Windows Update or Setup log entry rather than only the short code.

Fix 0x80004958 through Windows Update
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft describes the Update Troubleshooter as a first-line way to resolve errors encountered while downloading and installing Windows updates. Use the path for your edition:
- Windows 11: Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update and select Run. If Windows directs you to the Get Help app instead, follow that guided diagnostic.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Allow the checks and any offered repairs to finish. Read the result so you know whether a problem was detected or changed.
- Restart the computer even if the troubleshooter reports that no repair was required. After sign-in, return to Windows Update and select Check for updates, then retry the update that produced 0x80004958.
The troubleshooter does not prove that 0x80004958 has a single cause; it is the supported starting point for an update failure when the code itself is undocumented.
2. Repair the Windows component store and system files
Corrupted or incomplete Windows components can prevent an update from applying. Microsoft’s repair sequence uses Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) first, followed by System File Checker. Run both from an elevated Command Prompt, and wait for each command to finish before entering the next one.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command exactly, then press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - Leave the window open while DISM completes. Do not start SFC early or close the prompt during the operation.
- When DISM has finished, run:
sfc /scannow - Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent and reports its result.
- Restart Windows. Open Windows Update, select Check for updates, and retry the failed operation.
DISM and SFC repair Windows image and protected system-file problems; they do not establish what 0x80004958 means. If the same code returns, keep the command results with your other notes rather than repeatedly running the tools without a new clue.

3. Retry with a clean update attempt
After the restart, perform one controlled retry. Close applications, connect the computer to reliable power, and start the update from the normal Windows Update page. If a particular KB number is shown in Update history, record whether the retry fails at download, installation, or restart. That stage is more useful for diagnosis than the hexadecimal code alone.
If the update succeeds, keep the original dialog and KB information for your records in case the code returns. If it fails again, continue with the branch that matches the trigger instead of cycling through unrelated repairs.

Disconnect nonessential hardware
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance recommends unplugging devices that are not required to run the installation. Shut down if the installer requests it, then disconnect printers, scanners, USB flash drives, external drives, and docking stations. Leave only the input, display, network, and storage hardware needed for the installation. Reconnect devices after Windows is running normally and the upgrade has completed.
A peripheral can introduce a driver or detection failure during setup even when it works in the current Windows session. Disconnecting it is a diagnostic step, not proof that the device is defective.
Review permissions and software compatibility
Confirm that you are using an account permitted to install updates and that the device meets the installation’s normal requirements. Review recently installed software, especially security or system-management software, for compatibility with the upgrade. Do not remove protection casually; use the software vendor’s documented compatibility or temporary-suspension procedure if one is required, and restore protection after testing.

Retry the upgrade with nonessential peripherals still disconnected. If setup rolls back, record the exact stage, the complete message, the Windows edition/build, and any KB or setup-log identifier before making another change.
Separate an upgrade rollback from an ordinary update failure
An ordinary Windows Update failure usually returns you to the existing installation. An upgrade rollback may restart several times and undo changes before returning to the previous build. Treat these as different symptoms: use the troubleshooter and DISM/SFC for the update path, but preserve setup details and hardware/software changes for a rollback. The undocumented code cannot tell you which branch is correct.
If the code accompanies restarts or a blue/black screen
When 0x80004958 appears with repeated restarts, a blue screen, or a black screen, follow Microsoft’s stop-code approach rather than assuming Windows Update is the only cause.
Remove recently added hardware
Power the computer down safely and remove hardware added shortly before the crashes. This includes external devices and newly installed internal components where removal is safe for your system. Start Windows with only essential hardware attached. If the crashes stop, reconnect or reinstall one item at a time so the change associated with the failure can be identified.
Try Safe Mode
Start Windows in Safe Mode using the recovery options available on your installation. Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers and services. If the computer remains stable there, the difference is evidence that a recently changed driver, service, or startup component may be involved; it does not identify which one by itself. Record what works in Safe Mode and what fails during a normal start.

Inspect Device Manager
In a normal session or Safe Mode, open Device Manager and look for warning icons. Pay particular attention to devices added or changed before the first crash. Record the device name and warning text, then use the manufacturer’s supported driver or recovery procedure. Do not guess at a driver based only on 0x80004958; the code is not documented as a device-driver identifier.
Check available space and updates
Verify that the system drive has adequate free space for Windows to start, create temporary files, and install updates. Remove or move only data you understand, and empty temporary locations through normal Windows settings rather than deleting unknown system files. Once Windows is stable enough, install current updates and restart to test again.
Use System Restore when the timing fits
If the crashes began after a software, driver, or hardware change and a restore point exists, consider System Restore from Windows Recovery options. Choose a restore point dated before the change and review the affected-program list if Windows presents one. System Restore is a rollback option, not a guarantee that the undocumented code will disappear; preserve personal files and installation details before proceeding.

The available Microsoft Windows Update and setup documentation does not define 0x80004958 for Store or activation dialogs. Do not apply update commands repeatedly to an unrelated service. Capture the exact dialog, the account or product context shown, the time of failure, and the Windows edition/build. Use the support route for the service named in the dialog, and provide the complete message rather than only the hexadecimal value.

If the same code also appears in Windows Update, treat each occurrence as a separate event until the surrounding text or logs show a connection. A shared number is not evidence of a shared cause.
Collect evidence before escalating
If the troubleshooter, DISM/SFC sequence, and the applicable hardware or crash steps do not resolve the problem, stop changing settings and assemble a concise case for Microsoft support or your organization’s administrator.
- Copy the complete error dialog, including punctuation and any text before or after
0x80004958. - Record whether the failure occurred in Windows Update, upgrade/setup, Store, activation, or a crash screen.
- Include the Windows edition and build from Settings > System > About.
- List the update KB number, if Update history displays one, and the exact stage at which it failed.
- Describe restarts, rollbacks, blue/black screens, Safe Mode behavior, and any warning icons in Device Manager.
- Note recent hardware, driver, security-software, or other software changes, and whether nonessential peripherals were disconnected.
- Keep the results reported by the Windows Update troubleshooter, DISM, and SFC.
- Provide the relevant Windows Update or Setup log entries requested by support. Do not edit the originals; retain a copy of the files as generated by Windows.
This information lets support match the failure to the correct workflow or a component-specific log entry. Because Microsoft’s public documentation does not map 0x80004958 to one cause, a complete context package is more valuable than another blind repair attempt.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended after October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The troubleshooting steps above can still help explain an existing failure, but they do not restore ended support. If a Windows 10 device continues to fail and the hardware supports it, discuss an upgrade path with your administrator or hardware manufacturer; otherwise, understand that new fixes may not be delivered through the retired free-support channel.

Optional shortcut after the manual steps
