Error 0x800004005 is not identified by Oracle’s database error reference as an ORA error. Microsoft documents that exact hexadecimal code for a narrow Windows UI Automation timeout on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. If your message appeared in an Oracle product, first verify the characters, capture the complete message and log context, and determine whether the code is actually 0x80004005 or an Oracle ORA- identifier. The correct repair depends on that evidence.
What 0x800004005 means
The string 0x800004005 has two very different possible associations in the wording people use online:

- A documented Windows case: Microsoft describes a Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 UI Automation failure in which a call such as
IUIAutomationElement::FindAllcan time out when the user-interface node has many descendants. Microsoft states that a supported hotfix is available through Microsoft Support. - An assumed Oracle database error: Oracle’s official database error reference uses
ORA--prefixed identifiers. The reference does not identify0x800004005as a matching Oracle database error.
That does not prove your installation is unaffected. It means the title alone is insufficient to select an Oracle repair or a Windows hotfix. The application that displayed the message, the full text around the code, the operating-system release and the action that triggered it are essential diagnostic facts.

Copy the complete message
Use the application’s copy function, a screenshot, or the relevant log entry. Record:

- the exact code, including every zero and the final digit;
- the full sentence before and after the code;
- the Oracle product and version, if Oracle is named;
- your Windows edition and version;
- what you were doing when the message appeared, such as starting a database service, installing an update, launching an accessibility tool or closing an application; and
- any installation, update, forced shutdown or configuration change immediately beforehand.
Distinguish 0x800004005 from 0x80004005
0x80004005 is a different value. It is commonly displayed as an unspecified Windows failure, while 0x800004005 is the longer value addressed in Microsoft’s UI Automation article. Do not remove a zero, insert a zero or substitute one value for the other because they look similar in a screenshot. Search the complete text and the application’s log for the original spelling.
Determine which component reported it
If the dialog is owned by an Oracle executable but the text is a Windows exception, it may be a Windows component used by that program rather than an Oracle database diagnostic. Conversely, a database connection failure normally includes an ORA- code and accompanying text. The window title, process name, Oracle log and Windows Event Viewer entry can help identify the reporting layer.
When Microsoft’s documented hotfix applies
The Microsoft guidance is narrow. It concerns Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, UI Automation, and a timeout from a call such as IUIAutomationElement::FindAll while traversing a node with many descendants. A program that automates or inspects a very large interface can exhibit this symptom even when its Oracle data and database files are healthy.

Check the prerequisites
- Confirm that the affected computer really runs Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, rather than a newer Windows release or a different server edition.
- Verify that the failure is a UI Automation timeout, not a database startup, listener, authentication or SQL error.
- Match the architecture and service-pack requirements stated in Microsoft’s hotfix article for your installation.
- Back up business data and record the current update state before applying a system update.
Obtain the fix through Microsoft Support
Microsoft’s wording is that “A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft Support.” Follow the instructions in that article and use only the package and prerequisites that match your operating system. Do not download a similarly named executable from a third-party download site. If the documented scenario does not match, installing this hotfix is not a justified repair.
Validate after installation
Restart when the package requires it, reproduce the same UI Automation action and check whether the timeout returns. If the application still fails, preserve the new event-log and application-log entries; a repeated failure outside the documented scenario needs separate diagnosis rather than repeated hotfix installation.
Repair a possible Windows system-file problem
A Microsoft Q&A response treats this code as potentially associated with corrupted or missing Windows system files and suggests System File Checker (SFC). That is general troubleshooting advice, not proof that damaged files caused your particular message.

Run System File Checker safely
- Save open work and sign in with an account that can approve administrative prompts.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. On some Windows versions, search for Windows Terminal and open an elevated Command Prompt profile. - At the elevated prompt, run
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Closing the window early can leave the check incomplete.
- Read the final result. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, found files it could not repair, or could not perform the requested operation.
- Restart Windows and repeat the action that generated the error.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, keep the exact result and the time of the scan for support. Do not delete protected files manually or replace them with copies from another computer. If the error started immediately after an update or installation, the timing is more useful than repeatedly running the same command.
Investigate changes that commonly precede the message
The Windows troubleshooting material associates this code with several classes of change. Treat each as a lead to test, not as a confirmed cause.
Failed installation or uninstallation
Note the product being installed or removed and whether the process stopped part way through. If the vendor supplies a repair or removal utility, use the instructions for that exact product and version. Avoid deleting registry keys or program folders merely because their names contain “Oracle”; doing so can damage a working installation and makes later support harder.

Interrupted update or improper shutdown
Check Settings > Windows Update > Update history (or the equivalent Windows 7 update-history view) for an update that failed at the time the error began. Also record whether power was lost, the computer was reset, or a forced shutdown occurred. Complete any pending restart and test again before making additional changes.
Changed settings or redirects
Incorrect system settings and invalid redirects are listed as possible causes in Windows troubleshooting guidance. Compare the current behavior with a known-good account or a controlled test, if your organization permits it. Do not reset network, security or policy settings without documenting their previous values and obtaining the administrator’s approval.
Missing or damaged files
Use the SFC result, the application’s own log and Windows Event Viewer to determine whether a file is actually reported as missing or damaged. A code by itself is not evidence that every system file, Oracle DLL or database file should be replaced.

If the message appears inside Oracle Database
Do not try to translate a Windows hexadecimal value into an Oracle database repair. Capture the database alert log, listener log, client log or stack trace containing the event and look for an ORA- identifier and its complete text. Oracle’s error documentation and Oracle Support can act on that precise identifier; a title containing only 0x800004005 cannot.
Information to give an Oracle administrator
- database release and patch level;
- client, listener and server operating-system versions;
- the exact command or application action that failed;
- the complete error stack, including every
ORA-line; - whether the failure affects one user, one client computer or every connection; and
- what changed immediately before the first failure.
This evidence lets an administrator separate a database problem from a Windows component used by an Oracle client. Without it, changing initialization parameters, reinstalling a database or editing services is guesswork.

What not to do
- Do not assume the word “Oracle” makes a Windows hexadecimal code an Oracle database error.
- Do not substitute
0x80004005for0x800004005without the original message or log. - Do not install a Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 hotfix on a different operating system merely because the digits match.
- Do not use registry cleaners, unidentified DLL-download sites or unofficial hotfix mirrors as a first response.
- Do not repeatedly uninstall and reinstall Oracle components before collecting the ORA code and stack; that can remove configuration needed for diagnosis.
When to escalate
Escalate to Microsoft Support when the exact UI Automation scenario and supported operating-system prerequisites match but the hotfix cannot be obtained or does not resolve the timeout. Escalate to the Oracle administrator or Oracle Support when the log contains an ORA identifier, when database services fail to start, or when multiple clients cannot connect. Provide the complete message, timestamps, versions, recent changes and SFC result. If the error appears only in one accessibility or automation program, include that program’s version and the interface action that triggers the timeout.
