Error 0x2371A5CE has no published Microsoft definition or confirmed Windows component mapping. The only exact-code report located in Microsoft Q&A describes the message appearing after the user opened an email in Outlook’s Outbox, followed by an Outlook restart. That is an anonymous user report, not an official diagnosis, so the application and action immediately before the pop-up are more useful clues than the number itself.
Start with a restart and record what triggered the message. Then repair or reset the affected application. Use Windows Update troubleshooting only when the code appears during an update. Treat any pop-up that asks you to call a number, pay money, or grant remote access as suspicious rather than as proof that Windows is damaged.

What error 0x2371A5CE means
Microsoft does not document 0x2371A5CE as a standard Windows error in the support material reviewed. There is no authoritative explanation identifying a particular DLL, service, update, hardware device, or malware family behind the code. Consequently, the number alone cannot tell you whether the fault is in Windows, Outlook, another application, or a deceptive web page.

The Outlook report
An anonymous Microsoft Q&A user wrote: “I opened an email that was on the ‘outbox’, then I got the error message. After I clicked the OK button, it restart the outlook.” This establishes only that one person saw the code in that sequence. It does not establish that opening an Outbox message causes the error for everyone, nor that the code belongs to Outlook.

Why the trigger matters
Write down the program showing the message, the exact action that preceded it, whether the window looked like a normal Windows dialog, and whether the message returned after a restart. A code that appears only in one app calls for app-level repair first. A code that appears while Windows is updating calls for update troubleshooting. A full-screen browser warning with a telephone number belongs in the scam-response branch below.
First response: record the context and restart
- Do not click links or call numbers in the message. If it is a normal application dialog, note its wording and select OK once. If it is a browser page or includes a payment or remote-support demand, close the page without contacting the number.
- Record the trigger. Note whether you were opening Outlook, downloading an update, installing software, or doing something else. Include the date, the app name, and whether the message appeared once or repeatedly.
- Save work and restart Windows. Microsoft’s installation and removal guidance starts with restarting the PC. A restart clears a temporary process failure and provides a clean test without changing system files.
- Reproduce only the minimum needed. After signing in, open the same application but avoid repeating a risky action several times. If the code does not return, keep the note in case it reappears; if it does return, continue with the branch that matches the affected app or activity.
Repair or reset the application that displayed the code
When the message is limited to a Microsoft Store app or another supported desktop app, use Windows’ built-in repair controls before attempting system-wide recovery.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On some Windows 10 builds, the comparable page is labelled Apps & features.
- Find the application that displayed 0x2371A5CE, select its menu, and choose Advanced options when that entry is available.
- Choose Repair. This attempts to correct the app without removing it. Wait for Windows to finish, then restart the app and test the same operation once.
- If the code remains and Reset is offered, read Windows’ warning and choose Reset only if you accept the possibility that the app’s local settings or data will be cleared. Sign in again if the app requests it, then test.
Not every desktop program exposes Repair or Reset. If the controls are absent, do not assume that Windows itself is broken; use the application’s own supported reinstall or repair procedure, and keep a copy of any important files or settings first. Avoid deleting random DLL files or registry entries based solely on the hexadecimal code.
If the message appeared in Outlook
The Microsoft Q&A report specifically mentions opening an email in an Outlook Outbox. Because that report is not an official diagnosis, use it as a clue rather than a universal explanation.

Separate an Outlook fault from a Windows fault
- After restarting, check whether other applications open and work normally. If only Outlook produces the code, begin with Outlook’s application repair or reset options rather than changing Windows system files.
- Record whether the message appears while Outlook starts, while viewing the Outbox, or after selecting one particular message. The exact action determines what you should report to Microsoft or your organization’s administrator.
- If Outlook works until the same Outbox action is attempted, stop repeating that action and preserve the wording, time, and sequence of events. This gives support a reproducible symptom without assuming that the message itself is malicious.
- If several unrelated programs show the code or Windows becomes unstable outside Outlook, move to the system-wide checks below.
Do not treat the anonymous report as proof that an Outbox message is infected. The report does not identify the message, provide a diagnosis, or demonstrate that the code is caused by email content.
When 0x2371A5CE appears during Windows Update
Use this branch only when the code appears while Windows is downloading or installing updates. Microsoft states: “If you get an error code while downloading and installing Windows updates, the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve the problem.”
Windows 11
- Open Get Help from the Start menu.
- Run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter and follow the checks it presents.
- Restart when the troubleshooter finishes, then open Windows Update and check for updates again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Restart the computer and check for updates again.
If the code appeared in an ordinary app and not during update installation, the Update Troubleshooter is unlikely to address the underlying problem. Return to the app-repair path instead of running unrelated repair commands.
Decide whether the pop-up is a scam
A genuine error code can be confusing, but a browser-based warning is not automatically a Windows diagnosis. Be especially cautious when the alert:

- displays a telephone number or asks you to call “support”;
- demands payment, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or banking details;
- asks you to install remote-control software or give a stranger access;
- appears unexpectedly while browsing rather than inside the application you were using; or
- claims that you must act immediately to prevent arrest, data loss, or infection.
Microsoft’s Defender for Endpoint guidance says: “Microsoft doesn’t send unsolicited email messages or make unsolicited phone calls to request personal or financial information, or to fix your computer.” It also says: “Microsoft’s error and warning messages never include a phone number.” If the 0x2371A5CE alert includes one, close the page and do not call it.
Safe response to a suspicious alert
- Do not provide payment, passwords, verification codes, or remote access.
- Close the browser tab or window. If it will not close normally, use Windows’ ordinary task-management controls to end the browser process, then reopen the browser without restoring the suspicious page.
- Run Windows Security from the built-in Windows interface and review its results. Obtain security software only from Microsoft or the software vendor’s official channel.
- If you already contacted the operator, change exposed passwords from a different trusted device, contact the relevant financial institution about payment information, and tell your organization’s IT team if the computer is managed.
Do not download a tool advertised inside the pop-up. The presence of a hexadecimal code does not make an unsolicited support message authentic.
System-wide recovery when app and update checks fail
Escalate gradually. The broader the recovery action, the greater the potential disruption to applications, settings, or personal data. Back up important files before reinstalling Windows, using System Restore, or resetting the PC.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Reinstall the current Windows version where supported
Microsoft’s recovery order places reinstalling the current Windows version after troubleshooting. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the edition and build installed on your computer. Keep the device connected to power, and make sure you can sign in after the process. This is intended for a Windows-level problem, not an isolated Outlook event.

2. Remove a recent update if timing points to one
If the code began immediately after a Windows update, use Windows’ update-recovery controls to uninstall the recent update that coincides with the symptom. Record which update you remove and restart afterward. Do not remove unrelated updates simply because their dates are nearby.
3. Use System Restore or another point-in-time restore
System Restore can return system files and configuration to an earlier restore point where the feature is available. It is not a substitute for a current file backup. Review the list of affected applications before confirming, and save open work first.
4. Reset this PC only as a last resort
Reset this PC is more disruptive than repairing one app or removing one update. Read every choice about keeping or removing personal files and reinstalling applications. Confirm that important documents are backed up and that you have installation credentials or media for programs you will need afterward.

A clean installation or reset can remove applications and may remove data depending on the option selected. If you cannot verify a backup or do not understand the deletion choices, stop and obtain qualified help before proceeding.
Choose the least disruptive path
| Situation | Start with | Disruption and data risk |
|---|---|---|
| One application shows the code | Restart, then Repair and, if necessary, Reset under Installed apps | Usually limited to that app; Reset may clear local settings or data |
| The code appears while installing Windows updates | Windows Update Troubleshooter, restart, and check again | Lower than reinstalling Windows; update history may need review |
| A browser alert asks for a phone call, payment, or remote access | Close it, do not call, and run Windows Security | Avoids giving control or financial information to a scammer |
| Several programs fail or Windows is unstable | Back up, then follow Microsoft’s recovery order | Increasing disruption from reinstall, update removal, restore, and reset |
| Windows will not start or recovery requires media | Create and use a bootable Windows USB from another working PC | Installation choices can remove apps or data; verify backups first |
The deciding factors are whether the problem is isolated to one app, whether an update preceded it, whether the alert behaves like a scam, and whether you have a verified backup and recovery media. Do not jump to a full reset for a one-time Outlook message.
