Error 0x2154C346 has no verified public Microsoft definition. The code alone cannot identify a failed component, so the safest fix depends on when it appears: during startup, after a driver change, in Windows Update, during installation or upgrade, or on the Activation page. Record that context first, then work through the reversible repairs below before considering a reset or reinstall.
Identify what triggered 0x2154C346
Before changing system files or drivers, write down the complete message, the screen where it appeared and the action immediately preceding it. A code shown on a blue-screen stop page points to a different investigation than the same characters shown by Windows Update or Activation.

Win+R, enterwinver, and record the Windows edition, version and build. - Note whether the error occurs at startup, while signing in, after waking from sleep, during Windows Update, during an upgrade or clean installation, on the Activation page, or inside one program.

1. Disconnect recently added hardware
Shut down the computer and remove newly installed USB devices, docks, storage, printers, scanners, audio devices and other hardware. Leave the keyboard, mouse and display connected. If the error stops, reconnect devices one at a time and install the manufacturer’s current driver or firmware for the device that brings the problem back.
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
If Windows can reach the desktop, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now (Windows 10). At the recovery menu choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
If Windows will not reach Settings, interrupt startup two or three times by holding the power button when the Windows logo appears. Windows should enter the recovery environment, where the same Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings path is available. Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers. If the error does not occur there, a startup service, driver or recently installed program is a stronger suspect than the core hardware.

3. Inspect Device Manager
Right-click Start and choose Device Manager. Expand categories with warning icons, and check devices added or changed before the failure.
- Right-click the suspect device and choose Properties > Driver to review the provider, date and version.
- Use Roll Back Driver when the button is available and the problem began after an update.
- Use Uninstall device only for a clearly implicated device; restart and let Windows redetect it, or install the driver supplied by the hardware maker.
- Do not delete unrelated drivers merely because their dates look old. Record the device name and driver version before changing it.
4. Check storage and Windows updates
Open Settings > System > Storage and ensure the Windows drive has practical working space for updates and temporary files. Then open Settings > Windows Update (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update (Windows 10), select Check for updates, install offered updates and restart. Firmware and BIOS updates may also matter when the crash follows a hardware change; obtain those only from the computer or motherboard manufacturer and follow its recovery instructions.
5. Test hardware when symptoms point to it
Repeated crashes under load, memory-related messages, random restarts or failures that remain in Safe Mode justify hardware diagnostics. Run the manufacturer’s memory and component tests, and check that internal cables and replaceable memory modules are seated correctly. A hardware test result, even a passing one, is useful evidence for later support.

6. Restore a previous system state
If the problem began after a driver, program or update, open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore and select a restore point dated before the change. System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed drivers and applications. If no suitable point exists, use Settings > System > Recovery (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery (Windows 10) to review Reset this PC and other recovery options. Back up important files before any reset.
What general stop-error data can—and cannot—tell you
Microsoft’s general stop-error analysis attributes 70% of cases to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware, 5% to Microsoft code and 15% to unknown causes. These percentages are broad guidance from Microsoft’s analysis, not a diagnosis of 0x2154C346. They support checking recently changed drivers first, but they do not prove that a driver caused this particular code.

If 0x2154C346 appears during Windows Update
Run the built-in troubleshooter
Open the Get Help app and search for the Windows Update troubleshooter. Follow its automated checks, restart when prompted, then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates. On Windows 10, the same troubleshooting flow is available through Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update on editions that still expose that page.

Remove update interference
Disconnect nonessential external hardware, restart, and try the update again. Third-party antivirus or security software can interfere with update operations; temporarily address that conflict according to the software maker’s documented procedure, then restore protection after testing. Do not leave a computer unprotected longer than necessary.
Reset update components from an administrator terminal
Use this procedure only when the troubleshooter and restart do not help. Right-click Start, choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), and run each line separately:

net start cryptsvcRestart Windows and check for updates again. If a service reports that it was not running, continue with the remaining commands. If a rename reports that the folder already exists, use a different backup name rather than deleting the folder; preserving the old folder retains evidence for troubleshooting.

Do not start with a clean installation while the cause is unknown. First preserve the complete message and build information, then:
- Unplug nonessential printers, scanners, speakers, USB drives, external disks, card readers and other peripherals. Undock a laptop.
- Disconnect third-party security software only through its documented uninstall or temporary-disable process, and reconnect protection after the test.
- Run the Windows Update or Get Help troubleshooter, restart, and retry the upgrade.
- Confirm that the account has administrator access and that the system drive has sufficient free space.
- If setup fails again, preserve
setupact.logandsetuperr.logwhen present, along with the exact time of failure and every device or driver changed since the last successful start.
A clean installation erases applications and may erase data depending on the chosen option. Use it only after backups and after less destructive recovery paths have been evaluated.
If the message is shown on Activation
First verify the installed release with winver. Open Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10, then run Troubleshoot if it is offered. If the troubleshooter produces a different, documented activation code, use that code’s specific Microsoft guidance. Do not assume 0x2154C346 is an activation code merely because it is displayed near licensing information. Microsoft advises contacting support when an activation code is not listed in its code-specific documentation.
Windows 10 support and the upgrade decision
Microsoft ended free Windows 10 updates, technical assistance and security fixes on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 machine can still boot and run after that date, but recurring errors now carry an additional security and support risk. If the hardware meets Windows 11 requirements, evaluate an upgrade after backing up data and resolving the immediate failure. If it does not, plan a supported replacement or another security strategy rather than treating an unsupported installation as a permanent fix.
Build an escalation package if the error returns
When the code recurs after the steps above, gather the following before resetting or reinstalling:
- The complete message or stop-screen photograph and the exact trigger.
- Windows edition, version and build from
winver. - Windows Update history and the date of the first failure.
- Event Viewer entries from Windows Logs > System and any related application log.
setupact.logandsetuperr.logfor an upgrade or installation failure.- Recent driver, firmware, hardware, antivirus and application changes.
- Results from memory, storage and manufacturer hardware diagnostics.
Use Microsoft Get Help for a Windows component, or contact the relevant computer, component or application vendor with this package. No tested workaround specific to 0x2154C346 has been established, so support needs the surrounding evidence rather than the code alone.
