Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Windows shows 0x080070422 while opening Microsoft Store, Word, Minecraft, or signing in with a Microsoft account, start by checking one service: Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant. Open services.msc, set that service to Manual, start it if necessary, and test the affected app again. If the error remains, set Windows Update to Manual, restart Windows, and repeat the test.
The exact string 0x080070422 is not clearly documented by Microsoft as a separate error code. Its digits resemble the Windows service and Store error commonly written as 0x80070422, so the service checks are a practical response rather than a claim that Microsoft has formally defined this longer-looking variant. “Enablefeaturedsoftware” is likewise not established as an official Windows component name; it appears in a vendor-generated page title.

What this error means—and what it does not prove
The code is best treated as a sign that a Windows service required by a Microsoft app or account operation is unavailable, disabled, or not starting as expected. The available Microsoft Q&A guidance points first to Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant and then to Windows Update. That evidence is practical troubleshooting advice, not a formal Microsoft definition of 0x080070422.
Reports associated with this message include Microsoft Store, Word, Minecraft, and Windows sign-in. A failure in one of those places does not by itself show that your files are damaged, that Windows must be reinstalled, or that your computer has malware. It also does not establish “Enablefeaturedsoftware” as a service, executable, or Windows feature. Treat that word as a label attached to an error-page URL, not as a component you should search for in Services.

Before changing a service
Save open documents and close the Store, Office apps, games, and other Microsoft sign-in windows. Write down the exact app, action, and code. For example, note whether the message appears when the Store starts, when an installation begins, or immediately after entering account credentials. This makes the retest meaningful and prevents an unrelated launch failure from being mistaken for a service fix.
Use an administrator account if Windows asks for permission to change a service. You do not need to download a repair utility or replace hardware for the first-line procedure. The recommended changes are built into Windows and can be reversed from the same dialog.
Fix 1: Enable Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant
Open the Services console
- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter. If User Account Control appears, approve it so the Services console can open.
The list is alphabetical. Click inside it and type the first letters of Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant, or scroll to the Microsoft entries.

Set the service to Manual
- Double-click Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant.
- Open the Startup type menu and select Manual.
- If the service status is Stopped, select Start. If it is already running, leave it running.
- Select Apply, then OK.
The accepted Microsoft Q&A response from volunteer moderator Ramesh on May 1, 2024 states: “Please enable the “Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant” service. Set it to Manual.” “Enable” here means that Windows is allowed to run the service when a Microsoft account operation needs it; it does not mean setting it to Automatic.
Test the original action
- Open the app or Windows screen that produced the code.
- Repeat the same action: open the Store, start the download, launch Word or Minecraft, or try the Microsoft account sign-in again.
- If the error is gone, leave the Startup type at Manual. That is the setting specified by the troubleshooting guidance.
Test the same operation rather than a different app. A Store installation, for example, is a better confirmation than simply opening a web browser, because it exercises the service path that originally failed.
Fix 2: Check Windows Update
If Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant is set to Manual and the code still appears, inspect Windows Update in the same Services console. The Microsoft Q&A thread gives this as additional guidance for cases that continue after the first change.

- Set Startup type to Manual.
- If the status is Stopped, select Start. Otherwise, do not stop a running service just to repeat the test.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Close the Services console after saving the setting. Reopen the affected Microsoft app and try the same operation. If it still fails, continue with the restart step instead of repeatedly toggling the service.

- Close your applications and save any work.
- Select Start, choose the power menu, and select Restart.
- After Windows loads, wait until the desktop is responsive.
- Open Microsoft Store, Word, Minecraft, or the sign-in screen that displayed the code.
- Repeat the original action and record whether the message changes, disappears, or appears in a different place.
A restart matters because it gives Windows a clean opportunity to load the service configuration. The source discussion records people trying Store resets, PowerShell reinstallation, account changes, and service changes with differing results, so no single step should be presented as a guaranteed fix for every computer.
What to do when a service cannot be changed
The Startup type menu is set to Disabled
Open the menu and select Manual, then apply the change. Do not choose Automatic merely because the error mentions a Microsoft app; the cited guidance specifically calls for Manual. If Windows will not save the change, note the message shown and make sure Services was opened with administrator permission.
The Start button is unavailable or returns an error
First confirm that you selected the exact service name. Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant and Windows Update are separate entries. If the status changes to Running and then stops, record that behavior and test once after restarting Windows. Repeatedly clicking Start will not establish whether the original app operation works.
The service is not listed
Do not substitute a similarly named service and do not create a new service called “Enablefeaturedsoftware.” The available sources do not establish that name as a Windows component. A missing entry can reflect a Windows configuration or policy issue that this short procedure does not diagnose; record the Windows edition and the exact service list state before seeking edition-specific support.

Sign in with an administrator account or ask the administrator of the PC to perform the change. Avoid downloading an unknown registry file or a script that promises to recreate the service. The documented procedure uses the Services console, where the change is visible and reversible.

Testing by symptom
Microsoft Store
After the service changes and restart, open the Store and repeat the operation that failed. If the Store opens but an installation still produces the code, capture the app name and whether the failure occurs before or after the download begins. That distinction helps separate a sign-in or service problem from an app-specific installation issue, without assuming that the error text identifies the exact cause.
Word or Minecraft
Launch the same application after restarting Windows. If it prompts for an account, complete the sign-in and then repeat the action that originally failed. A successful launch alone is not proof that an installation or account operation is fixed; test the original action.
Windows sign-in
If the code appears during a Microsoft account operation, check Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant first and leave it at Manual after applying the setting. Restart Windows before trying the sign-in again. If the sign-in still fails, note whether the failure occurs before credentials are accepted or after the account screen loads; those are different points in the process and should not be conflated.
Settings to leave alone during this fix
- Do not rename or delete services based on the word “Enablefeaturedsoftware.” That term is not established as an official Windows service.
- Do not change a service to Automatic when the cited instruction says Manual.
- Do not assume that reinstalling Windows, replacing a drive, or buying installation media will repair a service configuration error.
- Do not treat a successful Store launch as proof that every Microsoft app or account action will work; repeat the failing operation.
- Do not promise yourself a guaranteed result. The source thread documents mixed outcomes from different attempts on different machines.
When the code keeps returning
Review the sequence in order: Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant set to Manual, Windows Update set to Manual if needed, restart, and a test of the original action. Confirm that the settings were actually saved rather than merely selected in a drop-down menu. Record any new wording, a changed code, or a service start failure.
If the two services are present, configured as described, and Windows has been restarted but the same operation still fails, the evidence available for this error does not identify a universal next command or a reliable success rate. At that point, use the recorded symptom and service behavior when consulting Microsoft support or a technician. Mention the exact string 0x080070422, because it may be a formatting variant of 0x80070422, and explain which services you checked.
Why common online suggestions may not settle this case
Search results may label the issue “Enablefeaturedsoftware repair” or present a long list of Store and PowerShell commands. The available Microsoft discussion does not establish that “Enablefeaturedsoftware” is a Windows feature, and it does not show that Store resets, PowerShell reinstallation, or account changes fix every instance. Those actions can change additional software state, so they should not replace the small, reversible service check that the Microsoft answer recommends.
Likewise, a page that calls the string a distinct Microsoft error code may be simplifying a formatting problem. The code’s exact definition is not clearly documented in the reviewed sources. Describing it as a likely variant of the 0x80070422 service/Store family is more accurate than assigning it a definitive internal meaning.
