If the code appears during a crash or unexpected restart
Microsoft’s guidance for recurring unexpected restarts covers driver, hardware, software, storage, and system-file problems. Work through the steps in order and stop when the behavior is resolved.
1. Remove recently added hardware
Shut down the computer and disconnect hardware added shortly before the crashes began, such as a USB device, expansion card, external drive, dock, or memory module. Reconnect essential devices one at a time after testing. If the error stops when a particular device is absent, check that device’s cable, power supply, firmware, and driver on the manufacturer’s support site.
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If Windows cannot remain running normally, hold the power button to interrupt startup two or three times; Windows should enter the Recovery Environment. You can also reach it from the sign-in screen by holding Shift while selecting Power > Restart.

- After the restart, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- Use the computer long enough to see whether the crash or code returns.
If Safe Mode is stable but normal startup fails, a nonessential driver, service, or startup program is more likely than a basic Windows component. If the same failure occurs in Safe Mode, continue with storage, updates, restore, and system-file checks.
3. Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to hardware changed before the problem, especially display adapters, storage controllers, network adapters, sound devices, Bluetooth, and USB controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon. Right-click the suspected device and choose Properties to read its status and the Events tab.
- Under the Driver tab, use Update Driver if a newer driver is available. If the problem began immediately after an update, try Roll Back Driver. If neither option helps, choose Uninstall Device, restart, and allow Windows to redetect it.
Do not install a driver from an unidentified download site. Use Windows Update or the hardware maker’s official support channel, and record the current driver version before replacing it.

4. Check free storage
Low free space can prevent updates, paging, and recovery operations. Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11, or Settings > System > Storage in Windows 10, and review the system drive. Microsoft’s stop-code guidance uses 10% to 15% free disk space as a rule of thumb. Remove or move files you recognize, empty the Recycle Bin, and use Storage Sense for temporary data rather than deleting unfamiliar folders manually.
5. Install pending Windows updates
In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart. Recheck after the restart because some updates are delivered in stages.
6. Use System Restore if the failure remains
System Restore can return system files, drivers, and settings to an earlier restore point without removing personal documents. Search for Create a restore point, open the result, select System Restore, and choose a point dated before the crashes. Review the affected programs list before confirming. If Windows will not start normally, use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore in the Recovery Environment.
If 0x0230961B appears in Windows Update
Use this branch when the code appears beside an update failure, download, installation, or restart message rather than on a stop screen.
1. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run.
- In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any suggested repair, restart the computer, then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
This is Microsoft’s first-line remedy for update failures. It can reset common update settings, identify service problems, and report issues it cannot repair.

2. Confirm storage and restart conditions
Keep the computer connected to power, disconnect unnecessary USB storage, and verify that the system drive has adequate free space. Microsoft’s update guidance says an upgrade requires at least 16 GB free on a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB on a 64-bit operating system. Those figures describe upgrade requirements; keeping additional working space is prudent for downloads and temporary files.
3. Temporarily remove incompatible third-party security software
Some third-party security products can interfere with an update. Before removing one, make sure you know how to reinstall it and that you have another protective option enabled. Use the product’s own uninstall procedure, restart, run Windows Update, and reinstall or re-enable protection after testing. Do not treat this step as proof that the security product caused the code.
4. Reset the Windows Update cache
This advanced procedure changes service state and folder names. Back up important files first, and use an administrator account.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Stop the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Windows Update service with:
net stop bitsnet stop wuauserv - In File Explorer, open
C:Windowsand renameSoftwareDistributionto a name such asSoftwareDistribution.old. - Open
C:WindowsSystem32, findcatroot2, and rename it to a name such ascatroot2.old. - Return to the elevated terminal and restart the services:
net start bitsnet start wuauserv - Restart Windows and check for updates again.
Windows recreates these folders. If a command reports that a service is not running, continue with the remaining applicable command; if a folder cannot be renamed, another process may still be using it, so restart and try again before proceeding.
5. Check the file system
In an elevated terminal, run:
chkdsk /f C:Windows may ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y, press Enter, and restart. The scan can take time, especially on a large or heavily used drive. Do not interrupt it unless the computer is clearly unresponsive for an extended period.

6. Repair the component store and system files
Run DISM first, then System File Checker, in an elevated terminal:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when possible. Wait for each command to reach a completion message, restart, and try Windows Update again.

When Windows fails before the desktop, disconnect nonessential peripherals and try the Recovery Environment. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options and test the options relevant to your last known change:
- Startup Repair: checks common boot configuration problems automatically.
- Startup Settings: provides Safe Mode for testing whether a driver or startup service is involved.
- System Restore: returns system settings and drivers to an earlier restore point.
- Uninstall Updates: removes a recently installed quality or feature update when the timing strongly implicates it.
- Command Prompt: permits the disk and system-file checks described above when Windows cannot load.
If BitLocker is enabled, Recovery Environment operations may request the recovery key. Retrieve it from the account or organization that manages the device before beginning recovery changes.
If only one application shows 0x0230961B
An application-specific occurrence should not be treated as a Windows stop-code incident. Record the application’s exact name and version, the action that triggers the message, and any plug-in, add-on, or update installed immediately beforehand.
- Restart Windows and test the application without reopening unrelated programs.
- Install the application’s current update from its official vendor channel.
- Use the application’s built-in repair or reset option if one exists.
- Temporarily disable newly added plug-ins or extensions and test again.
- Check Event Viewer: right-click Start, select Event Viewer, then inspect Windows Logs > Application at the time of the failure.
- Give the application vendor the exact code, timestamp, event details, Windows edition, and reproduction steps.
A generic registry edit or an unexplained executable download is not a code-specific remedy. Avoid those suggestions unless the application vendor or Microsoft documents the exact procedure for your situation.
How to use Event Viewer to narrow the cause
- Press Windows, type Event Viewer, and open it.
- Choose Windows Logs > System for restarts, driver failures, and service errors, or Windows Logs > Application for one-program crashes.
- Use Filter Current Log to narrow the time range around the code.
- Open an event marked Error or Critical and record its source, event ID, timestamp, and general description.
Event Viewer rarely names a solution by itself, but it can distinguish a display driver, storage controller, update service, or application module from an unrelated warning that happened at the same time.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s current support guidance says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer can continue to run, but ordinary support and security-update availability are no longer the same as for a supported Windows release. If troubleshooting does not resolve the problem, check whether the hardware can move to a supported Windows 11 configuration or discuss an appropriate supported lifecycle with your organization before relying on the machine for sensitive work.

When to stop troubleshooting yourself
- The computer repeatedly restarts before you can back up important files.
- You hear unusual drive noises, see repeated disk errors, or cannot complete
chkdsk. - The code appears with a vendor-specific application and the vendor requests diagnostic files.
- System Restore, DISM, and SFC do not change the behavior, or Windows cannot complete recovery.
- The device is managed by an employer or school and policy prohibits driver, security, or update changes.
Back up documents before advanced repairs. For a managed device, give the administrator the exact screen text, event details, recent changes, and steps already attempted rather than repeatedly resetting system components.
