Identify where the code appeared
Write down the exact wording and choose the matching troubleshooting path below. A code shown by Windows Setup requires different evidence from one shown by an application or a blue screen.

Capture evidence before changing anything
- Save the whole message. Photograph the screen or copy the text, including punctuation, a named file, a stop code, and any secondary number. A cropped code is often insufficient.
- Record the time. Note the local date and time, what you were doing, and whether the error followed a restart, update, device connection, or software installation.
- Record the Windows build. Press
Windows + R, enterwinver, and copy the Windows edition, version, and OS build. Include whether the machine is Windows 11 or Windows 10. - Check Event Viewer while Windows still starts. Open Event Viewer, inspect Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application, and look for critical or error events at the recorded time. Save the source, Event ID, level, and full General-tab text.
- List recent changes. Write down hardware connected, drivers installed, Windows updates, applications added, BIOS or firmware changes, and security software changes made immediately before the first occurrence.
Keep this information even if a later restart appears to clear the message. It gives you and Microsoft support a reproducible timeline instead of an isolated hexadecimal value.
Undo the most recent hardware or software change
Disconnect newly added hardware
Shut down the computer and unplug nonessential USB devices, docks, adapters, printers, storage devices, and other hardware added shortly before the error. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, and hardware required to boot. Start Windows again and test the same action. If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time and test after each connection.
Do not open the case or remove internal components unless you are qualified to do so. A failing device can produce a stop error even when its driver is current; the purpose of this test is to establish correlation, not to prove a component is defective.
Roll back or remove a recent driver
Open Device Manager from the Start menu and expand categories related to the change, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Bluetooth, Sound, storage, or Universal Serial Bus controllers. A yellow warning icon is evidence that Windows detected a device problem, but its absence does not rule one out.

- Right-click the suspected device and choose Properties.
- On the Driver tab, note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Roll Back Driver if it is available and the problem began after an update.
- Otherwise choose Uninstall device, restart, and install the manufacturer’s known-good driver from a trusted source.
- If the device is implicated but cannot be removed yet, use Disable device temporarily to test whether the failure stops.
Do not delete driver files manually or install a package that does not match the exact device and Windows architecture. Keep a record of every change so you can reverse it.
Remove a recently installed program
If the code appears only when a particular application or utility starts, uninstall the program added immediately before the first failure, restart, and test. If the application is essential, check whether its own repair or update option is available after Windows is stable. An application crash is not automatically a Windows stop error; preserve the application name and its Event Viewer entry.

Use Safe Mode to separate Windows from third-party startup code
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If 0x00A06647 does not occur there, a third-party driver, startup program, or service becomes more likely. Safe Mode is a diagnostic state, not a permanent fix.
Enter Safe Mode from a working desktop
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- At the recovery menu choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. Use networking only when you need it for a trusted driver or support task.
If Windows will not reach the desktop
Interrupt the normal boot process by powering off during startup twice; Windows should enter its recovery environment on the next start. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, then restart into Safe Mode. If recovery does not appear, use Windows installation or recovery media created for the same architecture and select the repair environment rather than installing over the existing system.
Investigate from Safe Mode
- Check Device Manager for warning icons and inspect devices changed before the error.
- Uninstall or roll back the correlated driver or program.
- Disable nonessential startup software, restart normally, and re-enable items one at a time.
- Repeat the action that produced the code. A clean Safe Mode result narrows the search; it does not identify the exact culprit by itself.
Check free space and install Windows updates
Keep adequate free disk space
Microsoft’s current guidance is to keep roughly 10%–15% of the system drive free. In Settings > System > Storage, verify the available space on the drive containing Windows. Remove or move large personal files only after confirming that you have a backup. Emptying temporary files can recover space, but do not delete folders or driver packages whose purpose you do not understand.

Low space can prevent updates, dump files, or recovery operations from completing. The percentage is guidance rather than a measured requirement for this code, and meeting it does not establish that storage caused the failure.
Apply pending updates
Open Settings > Windows Update (or Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10), select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when asked. If the error began immediately after a particular update, record its knowledge-base number and use the recovery or uninstall-update option only after capturing the evidence.
Update device drivers through Device Manager or the hardware maker’s support channel when a device is implicated. Windows Update and a device manufacturer can publish different versions; retain the previous driver so you can roll back.
Run memory and system diagnostics
Test physical memory
- Open the Start menu and search for Windows Memory Diagnostic.
- Choose Restart now and check for problems if you can close your work, or schedule the check for the next restart.
- Let both passes complete. Do not power off during the test.
- After Windows starts, open Event Viewer and search Windows Logs > System for the MemoryDiagnostics-Results source. Save the result and timestamp.
A reported memory error warrants testing modules and slots according to the computer maker’s service instructions. A clean result does not exclude intermittent memory, motherboard, storage, or driver faults.
Review crash information
If Windows created a small memory dump, preserve it before using cleanup utilities. Advanced users can analyze a dump with Microsoft debugging tools, looking for a consistently named module and the stop context. A dump that is too corrupted to analyze is not proof that hardware is healthy.

Check BIOS and firmware
Microsoft includes current BIOS and firmware among the checks for stop-error investigations. Compare the installed versions with the computer or motherboard maker’s support information, follow its recovery precautions, and avoid interrupting a firmware update. If the machine is business-critical, have an administrator or qualified technician perform this step.
Recover Windows when the error persists
Use System Restore
If the problem began after a driver, program, or configuration change and restore points exist, open the recovery environment and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Select a restore point dated before the first occurrence. System Restore changes system files, drivers, and settings; it does not normally remove personal documents, but back up important data first.
Use startup recovery for an unbootable system
From Troubleshoot > Advanced options, choose the recovery option that matches the symptom, such as Startup Repair for a Windows boot failure. Follow Microsoft’s startup and recovery guidance rather than downloading an unverified repair utility. If recovery asks for a BitLocker key, obtain it from the account or organization that manages the device before proceeding.
A reset or reinstall is a last resort because it can remove applications and, depending on the option selected, personal data. Do not choose it merely because the hexadecimal code looks unfamiliar.

If 0x00A06647 appears during Windows Setup or an upgrade
The reviewed Microsoft upgrade guidance does not map this code to a known Windows Setup cause. Diagnose the installation phase instead of treating the number as a generic driver error.
- Unplug nonessential hardware, including external drives, docks, printers, and removable adapters.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and install applicable updates before retrying.
- Confirm that the account has the permissions required to perform the upgrade and that sufficient disk space is available.
- Record whether failure occurred during preparation, installation, the first reboot, migration, or rollback.
- Preserve
setupact.logandsetuperr.logwhen present. Copy them before cleanup or another upgrade attempt because a later run can replace useful entries.
When contacting support, include the complete setup message, Windows edition and build from winver, the phase, the logs, and a list of hardware removed or left connected. Do not infer a cause from the code until those details correlate.
If it appears during activation
Activation has its own workflow and is not interchangeable with a stop-error investigation.
- Open Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10.
- Confirm the installed edition (for example, Home or Pro) and the build shown by
winver. An edition mismatch can invalidate a product key even when Windows itself runs normally. - Run the Activation troubleshooter and follow its account or hardware-change prompts.
- Copy the complete activation message and code. The Microsoft activation documentation reviewed does not list 0x00A06647; Microsoft advises taking an unlisted code to Microsoft support.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s 2026 support guidance. That date affects security and support availability; it does not by itself explain an activation code or prove that a license is invalid.

Microsoft Learn reports this distribution for stop-error investigations generally: 70% third-party driver code, 10% hardware issues, 5% Microsoft code, and 15% unknown because memory was too corrupted to analyze.

- Relevant dump files, Windows Memory Diagnostic results, and current BIOS or firmware versions.
- For Setup failures, the phase and copies of

- A chronological list of hardware, drivers, updates, and applications added or removed before the first occurrence.
Remove passwords, product keys, personal documents, and other sensitive data from logs before sharing them publicly. Microsoft support can interpret an unlisted activation code or a corrupted stop-error dump with the surrounding evidence.
