Write down the details while the message is visible. If the window closes, reproduce the problem once and record it again rather than guessing.

- Save work and restart Windows. A restart clears a temporary installer or update state and gives you a clean test. Do not repeatedly force the power off unless Windows is unresponsive.
- Disconnect nonessential accessories. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection attached, but unplug external storage, docks, printers, game controllers, and other devices that are not needed for the operation. Reconnect them one at a time after the error is resolved.
- Install pending Windows updates when Windows is otherwise usable. Open Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10. Apply available updates, restart, and test the original action again.

If 0x009FA17C appears in Windows Update
Windows 11: run the automated troubleshooter
- Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
- Search for the Windows Update troubleshooter and start the automated check.
- Allow it to apply the suggested corrections. Keep the device connected to power and the internet while it runs.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Record any new error number or message.
Microsoft states that the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve an error code encountered while downloading and installing Windows updates. Because 0x009FA17C itself is undocumented, the troubleshooter may report a different underlying problem or may find nothing; either result is useful evidence.
Windows 10: use the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update, then select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply the recommended action, restart the computer, and check for updates again.
If the troubleshooter reports a repair, test the same update a second time. If it reports no issue, open Windows Update history and note the update name, date, and any code shown there. The history entry may identify a component more precisely than the original dialog.

Check update history and preserve the evidence
On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history. Capture the entries immediately before the first appearance of 0x009FA17C. Include failed and successfully installed updates, their dates, and any KB numbers when contacting support. Do not remove an update simply because its date matches the first error; first establish whether the failure is repeatable and whether Windows identifies a more specific code.
If it appears during a Windows upgrade or installation
An upgrade failure can be caused by a peripheral, insufficient storage, a pending update, or an incompatible third-party driver. Work through these checks in order and retry only after each change.
- Back up important files. Copy documents and other irreplaceable data to a separate location before another upgrade attempt. Installation and recovery work can make an existing problem harder to recover from.
- Unplug nonessential hardware. Remove external drives, printers, cameras, hubs, card readers, and other accessories. Microsoft specifically advises unplugging nonessential hardware during upgrade troubleshooting.
- Check free space on the system drive. Microsoft’s general guidance is at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB free for a 64-bit operating system. These are current Microsoft instructions, not a measurement specific to 0x009FA17C. Check the edition and free space under Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10).
- Install pending updates first. Finish ordinary Windows updates, restart, and then begin the upgrade again. A restart may be required more than once.
- Update third-party drivers from the hardware maker. Prioritize graphics, storage, chipset, network, and other devices that were recently added or that show a warning in Device Manager. Use the manufacturer’s official package and note the old version before installing the new one.
- Retry with only the required hardware connected. If the installation succeeds, reconnect accessories individually so a failing device can be identified.
If the installer produces a different code, preserve that code and the complete message. It is a better diagnostic lead than 0x009FA17C by itself.

If it appears when an application launches
When the dialog names a desktop application, the application is the first suspect. The undocumented code does not prove that Windows itself is damaged.

- Restart Windows and launch only that application. If it opens after a restart, test it again before starting other programs.
- Check the application’s own update mechanism or the publisher’s official installer for a current version that supports your Windows edition.
- If the problem began immediately after an application update or plug-in installation, remove that recent change using the application’s documented uninstall or rollback option, then test again.
- If the application still fails, uninstall it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10), restart, and reinstall from the official source. Back up application-specific data first.
- Keep the original dialog, application name, and any crash log available when you contact the publisher. A support team can map a private application code that Microsoft does not document.
Do not download a replacement DLL from an unofficial website or overwrite system files to silence an application error. The hexadecimal value does not establish which file, if any, is damaged.
If it accompanies crashes or unexpected restarts
Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. Microsoft recommends starting a PC in Safe Mode when investigating stop-code and restart problems. If the error disappears in Safe Mode, a recently installed driver, service, or startup program becomes more likely; if it remains, the cause may be outside those optional components.

- Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10.
- Under advanced startup, select Restart now. Save work first; Windows will reboot into a recovery menu.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, choose the Safe Mode option shown on screen. Use Safe Mode with networking only when internet access is necessary for a specific diagnostic step.
- Repeat the action that normally triggers 0x009FA17C. Record whether the symptom changes.
Return to normal Windows by restarting when the test is complete. Safe Mode is a diagnostic state, not a permanent repair.
Inspect hardware and drivers
- Shut down and remove hardware that was added shortly before the crashes, if doing so is safe for the device.
- Open Device Manager and expand categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Storage controllers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or a device that appeared after the problem began. Open its properties and record the device name and status text.
- Install current drivers from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Restart after installation and test again.
- If the issue began immediately after a driver update, use Device Manager’s documented rollback option when it is available, then restart.
Do not install a generic driver package merely because its advertisement mentions this hexadecimal code. The code has no documented driver mapping.

If the crashes began after a driver or software change and a restore point predates that change, System Restore can return system files and settings to that earlier state without targeting personal documents. Open the recovery options, select System Restore, choose a restore point from before the first failure, and review the affected programs before confirming. If no suitable restore point exists, do not create a random one and assume it will repair the current problem.

When to escalate
Escalate after the context-specific steps fail, after the computer becomes unstable, or whenever installation work risks your data. Gather a concise package before contacting support:
- The complete error text and a screenshot, with personal information hidden.
- Windows 11 or Windows 10 edition, 32-bit or 64-bit status, and the date the problem started.
- Windows Update history or the name and version of the application involved.
- Whether Safe Mode changes the symptom.
- Recent hardware, driver, Windows update, or application changes.
- The exact steps that reproduce the error and what happened after each troubleshooting attempt.
Use Microsoft’s support channels for Windows-related failures, or the application’s publisher for an app-specific dialog. If Windows cannot boot normally and recovery is required, official Windows 11 installation media is an available recovery or reinstall option. Back up first, confirm whether you need repair or a clean reinstall, and understand which data and applications the chosen option can remove. Do not start a reinstall merely because the undocumented code looks serious.

What not to do
- Do not assume it is a Windows Update code. Microsoft’s common-error catalog does not list 0x009FA17C.
