Error 0x009F369B is not a documented Windows error with one known cause or universal fix. Microsoft’s public references do not define this exact value. Windows-style codes can be displayed by Device Manager, a blue-screen/stop-code process, Windows Setup or Update, or software made by another company. The correct repair therefore depends on where the value appeared. First preserve the complete message and identify its originating screen or program; then follow the matching procedure below.
What error 0x009F369B means—and why the screen matters
The hexadecimal-looking value 0x009F369B is not enough to identify a failure. Microsoft explains that system error codes can occur in many locations and may also be returned by non-system software. Its guidance is that such codes require investigation in their programmatic and runtime context. In practical terms, the same characters can be interpreted differently by a device driver, the Windows crash handler, an installer, or an application.

There is no published Microsoft definition, prevalence figure, or guaranteed repair for this exact value. Do not treat a web page that labels it automatically as a particular driver, virus, or hardware fault as authoritative. A reliable diagnosis starts with the complete message, the component that displayed it, and what Windows was doing at the time.
Record the evidence before changing Windows
If the message is still visible, capture it before restarting or dismissing the dialog. A transient screen may contain the only clue that distinguishes a device-status code from an application code.

- Copy every character. Enter the value exactly as shown, including the
0xprefix, every zero, and all hexadecimal digits. Note any words before or after it, a stop-code name, a device name, a file name, or a second code. - Identify the location. Write down whether it appeared in Device Manager, on a blue screen after a restart, in Windows Setup or Windows Update, or inside a particular application.
- Record the Windows build. Press
Windows key + R, typewinver, and press Enter. Save the edition, version, and OS build shown in the About Windows dialog. Windows 10 and Windows 11 can have different servicing states, so the build is important. - Note what changed. Record newly connected hardware, a driver or application installation, an update, an upgrade attempt, or a setting change immediately before the error.
- Preserve supporting evidence. Photograph a blue-screen message if it disappears, and save nearby Event Viewer entries or any crash-dump details that name a module, device, or process.
Do not uninstall drivers, delete registry entries, or reset Windows before this record is made. Those actions can remove useful evidence and may send you down the wrong troubleshooting branch.
Classify the originating Windows component
| Where you saw 0x009F369B | What to record | Use this article section |
|---|---|---|
| Device Manager, under a device’s Properties and Device status | Device name, category, status text, driver provider, driver date and version | Device-status procedure |
| Blue screen or repeated restart | Stop-code name, any “What failed” module, restart pattern, and recent hardware or driver changes | Crash and stop-code procedure |
| Windows Setup, an upgrade, or Windows Update | Full setup message, phase of the failure, and any additional setup code | Installation and update procedure |
| A normal application window, log, or installer made by another vendor | Application name and version, action being performed, and its own log or support identifier | Application-code procedure |
If you cannot tell which category applies, repeat the capture step and look for the window title or the program name in the taskbar. A code copied from a shortened notification may be truncated or mistyped.
When the code appears in Device Manager
Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Device Manager displays a status code in the affected device’s Properties dialog, but Microsoft notes that its list does not contain every code that can be generated. Because 0x009F369B is not defined in the public documentation, treat the status text and device identity as more useful than the number alone.
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the device marked with a warning icon. Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, read the Device status box. Copy its complete wording, not just the hexadecimal value.
- Open the Driver tab and record Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version. These details identify the responsible package when you contact the hardware vendor.
- If the failure began after a driver change, use the available Roll Back Driver option. If no rollback is offered, note that fact rather than installing a random package.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver intended for the exact device and Windows edition. Restart and check the same Device status box again.
- If the device is newly added, shut down, disconnect the nonessential hardware, and test Windows with the remaining configuration. A changed symptom after removal is useful evidence; it is not proof that the device is permanently defective.
Do not infer that an unlisted Device Manager code is a standard Microsoft error. Microsoft directs users with codes not covered by its article to the hardware manufacturer or Microsoft Support, supplying the device details and the complete status message.

When it follows a blue screen or unexpected restart
A recurring stop-code failure can originate in hardware, a driver, or software. The hexadecimal text may be one part of the crash information rather than a stand-alone diagnosis. Follow this sequence, changing one variable at a time so that you can tell which action affected the restart.
Remove recent hardware and peripherals
Power off the computer and disconnect newly added or nonessential external hardware, such as a dock, storage device, adapter, or printer. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and other equipment required to boot. If the crashes stop, reconnect devices individually and test between changes. Keep the device that reproduces the failure disconnected while you obtain an updated or rolled-back driver from its manufacturer.
Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If the restart does not occur there, a normal-start driver or service becomes more likely; if it occurs in Safe Mode as well, hardware or core Windows components deserve more attention.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Settings, choose System, then Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. (On Windows 10, the same control is under Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.)
- After the restart, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Choose 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. Record whether the error returns and what action triggers it.
Inspect drivers and available disk space
While the system is stable, revisit Device Manager and look for warning icons or a driver installed immediately before the crashes. Also check the system drive in File Explorer and ensure it has practical free space for updates, paging, and crash data. Microsoft lists checking free space among its baseline steps for recurring stop-code failures.

Install pending Windows updates
In Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when requested. Test the workload that previously caused the stop. If an update itself preceded the problem, record its date and build before attempting a rollback or recovery option.
Use recovery options when normal startup remains impossible
If Windows cannot start reliably after hardware and driver checks, return to Troubleshoot > Advanced options and use the recovery option that matches your evidence, such as a restore point or startup recovery. A recovery action can change installed programs or settings, so read the stated impact and back up accessible personal files first.
When the code appears during Windows Setup or an upgrade
Setup failures have a different context from Device Manager and stop codes. Preserve the complete message, including any code displayed after a colon or during a named installation phase. A shortened value may not identify the actual failure.
- Disconnect nonessential external hardware. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, and installation media or network connection required for the operation.
- Repair protected system files. Open an elevated Command Prompt by searching for Command Prompt, choosing Run as administrator, and run
sfc /scannow. Wait for verification to reach 100 percent, record the result, and restart before retrying Setup. - Try a clean boot. A clean boot starts Windows with a reduced set of startup programs and services, helping distinguish a third-party conflict from Setup itself. Record which services or startup items you disable so they can be restored after testing.
- Check Windows Update services. Confirm that the services required by Windows Update are not disabled, then retry the operation. If your organization manages updates, ask its administrator before changing service settings.
- Use code-specific Setup guidance only when a documented secondary code is present. The value 0x009F369B alone has no published Microsoft Setup definition, so do not substitute instructions for a different code.
Retrying repeatedly without preserving the phase, logs, and hardware state makes the failure harder to isolate. If the same phase fails after the clean-boot and system-file checks, keep the setup logs and escalate rather than cycling through unrelated registry edits.

When an application displays the value
Microsoft notes that non-system software can return system-looking codes. If 0x009F369B appears inside one application rather than a Windows component, first update or repair that application through its own supported channel and check its logs. Record the application version, the exact action that triggers the message, and whether the problem occurs in another Windows user account or only in that program.
Do not assume that a code shown by an application is a Windows Device Manager or blue-screen code. The application vendor may use the same hexadecimal format for an internal status value. Provide its support team with the full message, Windows build from winver, application logs, and a list of recent changes.
Check for transcription, display, and context errors
Before escalating, verify the characters against the original screen or photograph. Hexadecimal values use digits 0–9 and letters A–F; a missing leading zero, an extra digit, or a copied character can produce a value that has no documentation match. Confirm that you did not copy a process identifier, an address, or a second code displayed beside the actual error.
Also check whether the message was generated once or repeats under the same action. A single code during an interrupted update has a different investigation path from a code that appears after every boot. Note the exact trigger, time, and whether Safe Mode changes it. These observations are often more diagnostic than the number itself.
Best Value
Use Windows logs and dumps to identify the failing component
Open Event Viewer and inspect entries created at the time of the restart, setup failure, or application crash. Save the event source, event ID, timestamp, failing module, and complete General-tab text. For a blue screen, preserve any crash dump that Windows created and note the stop-code name and module named in the analysis. For a device problem, save the Device Manager status text and driver details instead.
Microsoft recommends its Error Lookup Tool, debugging tools, and protocol error references when a system code needs identification. Those tools can interpret a documented code, but they cannot manufacture a definition for an undocumented value. If a lookup returns no match, retain that result and continue with the originating component’s workflow rather than treating the code as proof of malware or a particular failed part.
A practical decision path
| Observation | Next action | What a changed result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Device status text names one device | Record driver details, disconnect recent hardware, and test the vendor’s driver or rollback | The device, connection, or driver is implicated, but not yet proven defective |
| Crash disappears in Safe Mode | Compare normal-start drivers and services with the Safe Mode set | A normal-start component is more likely than a failure that occurs before those components load |
| Crash continues in Safe Mode | Check hardware changes, free space, updates, and recovery options | Core Windows files or hardware remain possible causes |
| Setup fails at the same phase | Remove external hardware, run sfc /scannow, clean boot, and check update services |
The repeatable phase and logs can identify the installer component or conflict |
| Only one application shows the code | Use that application’s logs and support process | The value may be an application-defined status rather than a Windows system code |
What not to do
- Do not claim that 0x009F369B automatically means a virus, a specific driver, or a failing hard drive; the public documentation does not establish any of those conclusions.
- Do not install a random driver package because its description contains a similar number. Match the exact device, Windows edition, and hardware manufacturer.
- Do not delete registry keys or system files based solely on the hexadecimal value.
- Do not repeatedly reset or reinstall Windows before saving logs, crash dumps, and the original message.
- Do not report a repair as guaranteed. An undocumented code can have different causes in different contexts.
Prepare an escalation package if the code remains unidentified
After the matching workflow, contact the hardware manufacturer, application vendor, or Microsoft Support with a concise evidence package:
- The exact code and complete surrounding message, preserving capitalization and leading zeros.
- A photograph or screenshot showing the originating screen.
- Windows edition, version, and build from
winver. - Device name and driver provider, date, and version when Device Manager is involved.
- Stop-code name, named module, dump details, and restart pattern for a blue-screen failure.
- Setup phase, additional setup code, and relevant Event Viewer entries for an installation or update failure.
- Application name and version plus its logs when the value appears in third-party software.
- Recent hardware, driver, software, and update changes, along with the result of Safe Mode testing.
Microsoft specifically directs users with unlisted Device Manager codes to the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support. Supplying this context lets the recipient determine whether the value belongs to Windows, a device package, or another program instead of guessing from the characters alone.
