- What you were doing immediately beforehand, such as installing an update, upgrading Windows, changing a driver, or connecting hardware.
- Whether Windows still reaches the desktop and whether the error returns after a restart.
- Your edition and build. Press
Windows key + R, enterwinver, and select OK. Record the Windows version, edition, and build number.
This information prevents applying an update remedy to an activation problem or changing drivers when the failure is limited to Setup.

Fix 0x009E40BA during Windows Update
Microsoft’s first-line remedy for an error encountered while downloading or installing updates is the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter. Use the path for your version.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run. On supported Windows 11 installations, Microsoft may instead open an automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app; follow its prompts.
- Allow the checks and suggested repairs to finish. Note any item the troubleshooter cannot resolve.
- Restart the computer even if Windows does not insist on it.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Try the update again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply the recommended action, restart, and open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and retry the installation.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer can still run, but ordinary support and security-update availability are no longer the same as on a supported release. If the failed update is a Windows 10 update, include the exact edition and build from winver when seeking help.

If the troubleshooter reports no problem
- Restart once, then check for updates again rather than repeatedly starting the same installation without a reboot.
- Write down whether the failure occurs during download, installation, or the first restart. That distinction is useful when escalating.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices before trying again if the update also coincides with an installation or upgrade operation.
- Keep the full error text, not just the hexadecimal code, for Microsoft Support.
Fix the code during Windows installation or an upgrade
Setup failures are different from ordinary update failures. Microsoft recommends reducing hardware and permission variables before repeating the installation.
- Shut down the computer.
- Unplug nonessential external hardware such as storage devices, printers, hubs, cameras, and other accessories. Leave only the input devices and hardware required to operate the computer.
- Start Windows and sign in with an account that has permission to install software. If the installation is managed by an organization, contact its administrator rather than bypassing policy.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter using the Windows 11 or Windows 10 path above if the upgrade obtains files through Windows Update.
- Restart and repeat the upgrade with the same edition and architecture that your license and hardware support.
If Setup stops at a consistent percentage or after a specific restart, photograph or transcribe the complete message and note the last successful stage. Do not repeatedly interrupt a restart that is still progressing. Consult Microsoft’s upgrade-error guidance or Support with the Setup context, winver result, and connected hardware list.

Fix the code during Windows activation
An activation message does not establish that the license is invalid. First confirm exactly what is installed, then use the activation workflow.
- Press
Windows key + R, typewinver, and select OK. Record the edition and build, such as whether the installation is Home or Pro. - Open the activation page: on Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > System > Activation; on Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Run Activation Troubleshooter if the option is available. Follow its instructions and restart if it requests one.
- Check whether
0x009E40BAappears in Microsoft’s published activation-error list or instructions. The exact code is not identified there, do not substitute a different code’s remedy. - If the code remains and is not listed, contact Microsoft Support. Provide the full wording, edition, build, the account or license context, and whether the computer was recently upgraded or had hardware replaced.
Fix it when it comes with restarts, a blue screen, or a black screen
A stop screen or repeated restart changes the priority from repairing an update to getting a stable boot. Microsoft’s general recovery sequence focuses on recent hardware, Safe Mode, drivers, disk capacity, updates, and restore options.

Remove recent hardware
- Power off the computer.
- Disconnect hardware added shortly before the first restart or stop screen, including external devices and newly installed internal components when it is safe to do so.
- Start Windows and check whether the restarts stop. If they do, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the change associated with the failure.
Try Safe Mode
Use Windows Recovery Environment when normal startup repeatedly fails. From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. You can also trigger Recovery Environment by interrupting startup twice; use that method only when Windows cannot reach sign-in.

- After the restart, choose Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking only if network access is necessary.
- If Safe Mode works, undo the most recent driver or hardware change first and restart normally.
Inspect Device Manager and drivers
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look for devices with a warning icon, especially hardware installed or updated immediately before the problem.
- Open the device’s Properties to read its status. Use Driver options to update or roll back the affected driver when the relevant option is available.
- Restart and test normal startup.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, rolling back is generally more appropriate than installing another unverified package. Obtain replacement drivers from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update rather than random download sites.
Check free disk space and install pending updates
Low free space can prevent Windows from completing updates and recovery operations. In File Explorer, open This PC and check the system drive. Remove or move personal files only after confirming that backups exist, then install pending Windows updates once the system is stable.
Use System Restore or another recovery option
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment with Shift + Restart or from Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11 (Windows 10 uses Settings > Update & Security > Recovery).
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore when restore points are available.
- Choose a restore point dated before the driver, hardware, or update change. System Restore affects system files and settings; it is not a substitute for backing up personal files.
- If no suitable restore point exists, use another available recovery option and follow its warning screens carefully.
What not to conclude from this code
- The hexadecimal format alone does not identify a universal Windows component.
- The code is not, by itself, proof of malware or a compromised account.
- An activation screen does not prove that Windows is permanently unlicensed.
- A restart or stop screen does not prove that the same underlying fault will recur after a successful restart. Microsoft notes that many unexpected Windows 11 restarts resolve after the restart.
- Do not apply instructions for a different error code just because the numbers look similar.
When to escalate
Contact Microsoft Support or the relevant hardware or application publisher when the code persists after the matching procedure, appears on every restart, or is not listed in the applicable Microsoft guidance. Include:
- The exact message and a photograph if the screen disappears quickly.
- The location and action that produced it.
- The
winveredition and build. - Whether Safe Mode works.
- Recent updates, driver changes, hardware additions, and available free space.
- The troubleshooting steps already completed and their results.
This evidence lets support distinguish an update, Setup, activation, driver, and recovery case without guessing from the code alone.
