3. Preserve setup logs
If setup fails again, do not immediately delete temporary installation data. Keep the setup logs, including setuperr.log when it is present. The log’s timestamp and entries can show which phase failed and provide details that the short hexadecimal message omits.

Use Windows Recovery when normal startup is unavailable
When Windows cannot reach the desktop, use the built-in Windows Recovery options. Microsoft documents startup-repair methods that include Safe Mode, System Restore, and installation media. Choose the least disruptive option that matches your evidence:

- System Restore: use an available restore point to return system state to an earlier point when the computer started normally.
- Installation media: use it to access recovery tools when the local recovery environment cannot start.
Keep the complete stop-screen or restart message. If a recovery option changes the behavior, record exactly which option was used and when the code next appeared.
Check Event Viewer when Windows remains usable
Open Event Viewer and inspect entries created at the time of the crash or restart. Capture the event source, event ID, timestamp, and full description rather than copying only 0x009E3D87. A matching event may identify a device, driver, service, or application. Consider hardware, drivers, and software as categories
Microsoft’s guidance on unexpected restarts states that they may be caused by “a hardware device, its driver, or software.” Use that statement as a troubleshooting framework, not as a claim that one of those categories is responsible for this undocumented code. Capture the application context
