The hexadecimal value alone cannot tell you whether the failing component is Windows, one application, an installer, a driver, or a device. The reliable fix is to capture where it appears, decode it with Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool, and then follow the recovery path that matches the symptom. Do not treat the code itself as proof of a virus, a particular hardware failure, or a Windows stop code.
What error 0x009C49D0 means
Microsoft explains that system error codes can occur in many parts of the operating system and must be interpreted in their programmatic and runtime context. Third-party software can also create its own hexadecimal codes. That is why 0x009C49D0 cannot be assigned a trustworthy definition without knowing the software and event that produced it.

A code shown by a game installer, for example, may describe a problem inside that installer rather than a Windows component. The same-looking value in an application log, a device utility, or a restart screen could have a different origin. The first objective is therefore identification, not immediate registry editing or file deletion.
What the code does not prove
- It is not established as a specific Windows stop code.
- It is not a confirmed malware signature. The hexadecimal text by itself is not evidence that the computer is infected.
- It is not enough to identify a bad driver, failing memory module, damaged disk, or any other hardware fault.
- It is not automatically an update error. An update may be involved only if the message appears during Windows Update or another installer.
Capture the context before changing Windows
Write down the complete message before restarting or uninstalling anything. A screenshot is useful, but also record the words around the code because those words often identify the responsible component.

- Where it appears: note the application, game, installer, driver utility, device, or Windows screen.
- When it appears: record whether it occurs at sign-in, while launching a program, during installation, after sleep or resume, when connecting hardware, or during shutdown.
- What changed first: list a recent Windows update, application update, driver installation, new peripheral, memory change, disk replacement, or security-software change.
- How often it happens: distinguish a one-time message from a repeatable failure and from a restart or stop screen.
- Related records: copy any event-log entry, application log, crash report, or file name shown with the value.
This record prevents a common mistake: applying a system-wide repair to an error generated only by one program. It also gives you a baseline for testing each change. If the message returns, you can tell which action preceded it instead of changing several variables at once.
Decode 0x009C49D0 with Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool
Microsoft documents a digitally signed utility named Err_6.4.5.exe. Its purpose is to display the message text associated with a hexadecimal status code or another code found in Windows header definitions. Use it as an identification step, not as a repair program.
- Obtain
Err_6.4.5.exefrom Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool documentation and place it in a folder you can reach from Command Prompt. - Open Command Prompt. If you saved the utility in a different folder, change to that folder first, or run the command with the utility’s full path.
- Enter the value exactly as shown in the message, including the
0xprefix:Err_6.4.5.exe 0x009C49D0. - Read the returned text and compare it with the application or event that produced the original message. A returned description is useful only when the source and timing agree.
- Save the command output with your notes. If the tool reports no matching text, retain that result; it means the value is not represented in the definitions available to that version of the utility, not that the computer has a particular infection or hardware defect.
The lookup-tool documentation was last updated July 14, 2025 and warns that the utility is point-in-time: later Windows releases can add codes. If the value first appears after a major Windows release, recheck the current Microsoft documentation and the support notes for the originating application.

Choose the fix path from the symptom
| Observed symptom | First scope to investigate | Most reversible first action |
|---|---|---|
| One-time dialog in one application | That application’s files, log, update, or configuration | Record the message, restart the application, and reproduce it once before changing Windows |
| Repeated failure when launching one application | The application, its dependencies, or a change made immediately before the failures | Check the application’s own update and repair or reinstall options, then test again |
| Message during a driver or device operation | The named device and its driver | Inspect Device Manager and compare the timing with the last driver or hardware change |
| Unexpected restart or stop screen | Windows startup, drivers, hardware, storage, and updates | Use the recovery order below, beginning with recently added hardware and Safe Mode |
| Message during an installer or Windows Update | The installer log, update history, and available disk space | Capture the complete installer text, then check free space and pending updates |
Work from the narrowest scope to the broadest. Lookup and logging are reversible; Safe Mode and disabling a suspect device are more intrusive; updates, driver changes, and recovery actions should come only after the trigger is documented.
Fixes when one application shows the code
Test whether the failure is repeatable
Close the affected program, restart it once, and perform the same action that produced the message. If it does not return, keep the original text and time in your notes. A one-time dialog does not justify system-wide repairs. If it returns every time, continue with the application-specific checks below.
Use the application’s own repair route
Check the program’s Help, Settings, or installer maintenance screen for an update, repair, reset, or reinstall option. Use the application vendor’s support instructions when the code is displayed inside that program. Preserve any project files or saved settings before a reset or reinstall. After each change, repeat the same action and record whether the message changed, disappeared, or moved to a different stage.

Separate an application fault from an operating-system fault
Note whether other programs work normally. A failure limited to one application points first to that application or its runtime context; a failure affecting several programs or the whole desktop requires the broader Windows sequence. Do not infer that a shared Windows component is damaged merely because the value is hexadecimal.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fixes when Windows restarts or shows a stop screen
Microsoft’s basic recovery order is designed to start with changes that are easy to reverse. Follow it in sequence and test after each step.
- Remove recently added hardware. Power down if necessary, disconnect a newly installed peripheral or expansion device, and start Windows with the previous hardware configuration. If the restarts stop, reconnect one item at a time to identify the trigger.
- Start in Safe Mode if normal startup is unreliable. From the sign-in screen or Start menu, hold Shift while selecting Restart to enter Windows Recovery Environment, then choose Troubleshoot, Advanced options, Startup Settings, and Restart. Select the Safe Mode option. If Windows is stable there, a startup driver or service becomes more likely than an ordinary application.
- Inspect Device Manager. In Windows search, open Device Manager and look for warning icons. Expand the device categories related to the timing of the failure. Record the device name and driver provider before changing anything.
- Update, disable, or uninstall a suspect device. If the problem began after a driver or hardware change, use Device Manager’s driver and device actions to test one suspect at a time. Restart and repeat the original operation after each change. If disabling a device removes the symptom, leave it disabled only long enough to obtain the correct driver or replacement; do not disable unrelated devices.
- Check free disk space. Open File Explorer and inspect the system drive’s available space. Installers, updates, recovery operations, and crash logging need working space. Free enough space for the pending operation before trying it again.
- Install current Windows updates. Open Windows Update in Settings, check for updates, and restart when Windows requests it. On Windows 11 this is under Settings, Windows Update; on Windows 10 it is under Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update. Record the update date if the error changes afterward.
- Use System Restore or another recovery option. If the problem began after a known change and the earlier steps do not identify it, open Windows Recovery Environment and select the recovery option appropriate to your available restore points or recovery media. Read the impact summary before confirming, and back up important files when Windows is stable enough to do so.
Microsoft notes that many unexpected Windows 11 restarts are resolved by the restart itself. A single restart with no recurrence is different from a repeatable stop screen; continue investigating when the event returns.

Investigate drivers and hardware without guessing
Driver and hardware changes deserve a controlled test because they can affect the whole operating system. Start with the device named in the message or the device whose installation preceded the first occurrence.
- In Device Manager, capture the device name, driver provider, and current driver date or version before making a change.
- Obtain a replacement driver from the device manufacturer when an update is needed. Avoid installing a driver merely because it is newer if it is for a different model or Windows edition.
- Test after one driver change. If several drivers are updated at once, you lose the ability to identify which change affected the error.
- If the device was newly added, remove it and test the previous configuration. A symptom that disappears provides stronger evidence than the hexadecimal value alone.
- If Windows cannot remain running long enough to test normally, repeat the comparison in Safe Mode and then return to normal startup for confirmation.
Check Event Viewer and application logs
When the code returns, open Event Viewer and inspect entries recorded at the same time. Look in Windows Logs, especially System and Application, and note the event source, event ID, failing executable or module, and timestamp. For a program-specific failure, also open that program’s own log folder or crash-report screen.
Do not treat an event with a nearby timestamp as proof of causation. Compare the event text with the original dialog and the Error Lookup result. The strongest lead is a component named in both places and appearing immediately before the failure. Save the relevant text before clearing logs or changing settings.

How likely are different causes?
Microsoft’s advanced troubleshooting guidance gives a broad distribution for analyzed Windows stop errors: 70% were caused by third-party driver code, 10% by hardware, 5% by Microsoft code, and 15% remained unknown because memory was too corrupted to analyze. These figures describe Microsoft’s general stop-error analysis, not 0x009C49D0. They cannot be used to calculate the probability that your particular message is a driver, hardware, or Windows fault.
| General stop-error category | Share in Microsoft’s analysis | How to use the figure here |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party driver code | 70% | A reason to investigate recently changed devices and drivers when the symptom is a restart or stop screen; not a diagnosis of this code |
| Hardware | 10% | Consider newly added or malfunctioning hardware after software and driver timing are checked |
| Microsoft code | 5% | Keep Windows updates and recovery options in the sequence, without assuming Windows is responsible |
| Unknown because memory was too corrupted to analyze | 15% | Explains why some crashes remain unresolved even after logs are reviewed |
What to do when the lookup returns no definition
A blank or unhelpful lookup result is compatible with a code created by a third-party program or with a value not included in that utility’s definitions. Return to the complete message, the application or device name, and the event-log timestamp. Search the originating vendor’s support material using the exact text and version shown in your notes, rather than searching for the hexadecimal value in isolation.
If the error began after a major Windows update, check the current Microsoft documentation again because the lookup utility can lag later Windows releases. If it began after an application, driver, or hardware change, prioritize that change and test by reverting or updating only the implicated component.
When to escalate
Escalate with evidence when the code keeps returning, Windows cannot start normally, or the failure affects multiple applications. Provide the complete message, the lookup output, the application or device involved, the exact time, recent changes, Event Viewer entries, and the result of each test. Tell support whether Safe Mode works and whether removing a device or reverting a driver changes the symptom.
This evidence is more actionable than reporting “Windows shows 0x009C49D0.” It lets support distinguish an application-generated value from a system-wide stop event and prevents repeated recommendations that you have already tested.
Optional shortcut after the manual checks
As an optional shortcut, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, settings that increase CPU, RAM, or disk load, and temporary or cache files. It also includes privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days, followed by a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Keep a reproducible record
After the message disappears, retain the original screenshot, lookup output, and event details for a while. Note the Windows edition, the application or device version, the change that resolved the issue, and whether the error returned after a restart. If it comes back, compare the new context with the old one before repeating repairs. That comparison is the best way to determine whether 0x009C49D0 represents the same underlying failure or a new component using its own code.
