Error 0x009B6E90 has no confirmed meaning in Microsoft’s published Device Manager, Win32/system-error, or Windows Update references. The hexadecimal string alone is not enough to choose a safe repair. It may be a value emitted by a device, an application, Windows Update, or another component, and each context requires a different diagnostic path.
Use the workflow below to identify the component that produced the value, decode it where possible, and apply only the repair appropriate to that component. If the code remains unlisted, Microsoft’s guidance is to contact the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support rather than use a generic registry or “error fixer” procedure.

What error 0x009B6E90 means
Microsoft’s current Device Manager documentation does not identify 0x009B6E90, and the published Device Manager list explicitly does not contain every possible code. Microsoft’s system-error guidance also explains that hexadecimal values must be interpreted in the context in which they were returned. A number copied from a dialog without the surrounding message, application name, device, or log entry cannot establish the underlying failure.

Before changing anything, capture the complete error
Write down the information below before uninstalling a driver, resetting Windows Update, editing the registry, or deleting files. This record often reveals that the hexadecimal value is only one part of a longer status message.
- The complete text of the message, including text before and after
0x009B6E90. - Where it appeared: Device Manager, Windows Update, an application window, an installer, Event Viewer, or another tool.
- The affected device, application, feature, or update name.
- Your Windows edition and build. Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and record the version and build shown. - The date and time, especially if the message came from a log.
- Any second or paired code shown in the same message.
- What happened immediately beforehand, such as a restart, hardware connection, driver installation, application launch, or update attempt.
Keep a screenshot as well as a typed copy. A screenshot preserves punctuation and any component name that may be omitted when the code is copied by itself.
Identify which Windows component produced the code
| Where you saw the value | What to inspect | Most appropriate next source |
|---|---|---|
| Device Manager | The affected device’s Properties window and Device status text | Microsoft’s Device Manager code guidance and the device manufacturer |
| Windows Update | Update history, the full failure message, and any second code | Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance and Setup/Windows Update logs |
| An application or installer | The application name, operation being performed, and its own log | The application’s documentation or support channel |
| Event Viewer or another system log | Event source, event ID, level, timestamp, and surrounding events | Documentation for the named Windows component |
Do not assume that every hexadecimal value is a driver code. The same-looking format can be used by unrelated components, and a value that is meaningful in one subsystem may have no meaning in another.
If the message came from Device Manager
Read the official device status
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the device with the warning icon.
- Double-click the device.
- Open the General tab and read the Device status area.
- Copy the entire status message, not just the hexadecimal value.
This is Microsoft’s documented location for a Device Manager code. If the status contains 0x009B6E90 but the value is absent from Microsoft’s published list, the list does not provide a code-specific repair. Microsoft advises contacting the hardware device vendor’s technical support or Microsoft Support for an unlisted value.
Check the device identity before contacting support
Record the device’s exact name, manufacturer, model, and—where shown—the hardware IDs from the Details tab. Select Hardware Ids in the property list and copy the first entries. These identifiers let the vendor match the problem to the correct device and driver instead of guessing from the hexadecimal string.
Do not remove the device or install a random driver package solely because this value appears. Driver removal can leave a device unusable, and a package intended for a different hardware revision can create a second problem.
If the value is a system or Win32 status
Use Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool
Microsoft provides the Error Lookup Tool for translating hexadecimal system-error values into symbolic names and messages. Enter the value exactly as shown, including the hexadecimal prefix when the tool requests it. Treat the returned text as a clue, not as proof that the code came from the component you are troubleshooting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft cautions that the tool reflects point-in-time data. Newer Windows releases can add codes, and a lookup result still has to be compared with the original component, Windows version, and full message. If the tool returns no match, that does not prove that Windows is damaged; it may mean the value is component-specific, newly introduced, formatted differently, or not a standard Win32 system error.
Compare the result with the emitting component
Check whether the symbolic name and description fit what was happening when the error appeared. For example, a value shown by a third-party installer should not automatically be treated as a Device Manager status simply because it is hexadecimal. Preserve the original log entry and look for an event source, module name, or second status value that identifies the subsystem.
If it appeared during Windows Update
Separate the update failure from the displayed number
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and locate the failed update. Expand its details and copy every code and message. The Windows Update troubleshooting material lists common update codes and causes, but 0x009B6E90 is not among the documented values shown there. A paired setup code or a more specific message may identify the actual failure class.

Collect update and setup evidence
- Record the update’s knowledge-base number, title, and installation date.
- Note whether the failure occurred during download, installation, restart, or the rollback phase.
- Look for a second code in the Update history entry, restart screen, or setup log.
- Save the relevant Windows Update or Setup log entries around the recorded time.
- Include the Windows edition and build from
winverwhen asking for support.
Do not apply a fix intended for a familiar Windows Update code just because the unfamiliar value begins with the same characters or appears in the same screen. The documented cause may belong to a different code in the message.

If an application or installer displayed it
Use the application’s own context
Close and reopen the application only if doing so will not lose unsaved work, then reproduce the action once while recording the full message. Note the application version, the file or operation involved, and whether the error occurs for every user account or only one. Check the application’s log or support documentation for the exact message and event time.
An application may pass through a Windows status value without exposing the original symbolic name. In that situation, the application vendor is usually the party that can map the value to its operation. Provide the vendor with the complete message and the Windows build rather than reporting only 0x009B6E90.
If Event Viewer contains the value
Capture the event source and event ID
- Press
Win+R, entereventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Windows Logs and choose the log most closely related to the incident, such as System or Application.
- Sort or filter around the time you recorded.
- Open the event and copy the Source, Event ID, Level, General text, and Details information.
- Check events immediately before and after it for the component name or a more specific error.
The source and event ID are often more useful than the hexadecimal value. Search Microsoft documentation for that named source and event ID, or provide both to the relevant vendor or Microsoft Support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safe actions after the source is known
Once the emitting component and complete message are established, follow that component’s documented procedure. The appropriate action could involve an application repair, a vendor-supported driver package, an update-specific recovery step, or no change if the value is informational. The evidence reviewed for 0x009B6E90 does not establish which of those categories applies.
When a vendor supplies a procedure
- Confirm that the procedure matches your Windows edition, build, and hardware or application model.
- Create a restore point or other appropriate backup before changes that affect drivers, system settings, or applications.
- Download software only from the hardware or application vendor’s official support channel.
- Follow the vendor’s uninstall, installation, and restart order exactly.
- Retest the original operation and keep the new message if the problem remains.
When Microsoft Support is the right destination
Contact Microsoft Support when the value is unlisted in Device Manager, appears in a Windows component without a vendor-specific owner, or persists after the documented component procedure. Include the complete message, Windows build, timestamp, event source or device identity, and any paired code. Microsoft’s system-error guidance notes that these values can occur in many locations and require investigation in context.
What not to do
- Do not edit the registry to search for or delete the hexadecimal value.
- Do not remove a driver merely because the message contains a hexadecimal number.
- Do not install a generic driver package that does not identify your exact device.
- Do not run a third-party “error fixer” that promises to repair this specific code when no component has been identified.
- Do not infer malware, hardware failure, or Windows corruption from the number alone.
- Do not substitute a repair for a different, familiar Windows Update code.
These actions can be appropriate in a known, documented component-specific case, but the available Microsoft references do not publish a 0x009B6E90-specific procedure.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 considerations
The Device Manager guidance applies to both Windows 10 and Windows 11. The exact Settings layout and available log details can vary by build, so record the build shown by winver rather than reporting only the edition. If the error appears after upgrading Windows, include the pre-upgrade and current build numbers and identify whether the affected device or application changed at the same time.
A code’s absence from one version’s documentation does not establish that it is invalid on another version. Conversely, a lookup result from an older Windows release may not describe behavior on a newer build. Always compare the returned description with the component and version that actually produced the message.

Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- Copy the complete message and record the application, device, feature, Windows build, date, and time.
- Classify the source as Device Manager, Windows Update, an application or installer, Event Viewer, or another component.
- Use the source-specific Microsoft or vendor documentation.
- If it is a Device Manager value, read Properties > Device status and contact the hardware vendor or Microsoft when the value is unlisted.
- If it is a system or Win32 value, try Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool and compare the result with the original context.
- If it is a Windows Update message, collect Update history, Setup or Windows Update logs, and every paired code.
- Apply only a documented procedure that matches the identified component.
- If no component can be identified, provide the complete evidence to Microsoft Support rather than guessing.
As an optional shortcut after you identify the affected component, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check certain Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 with a free trial by category of at least two days followed by a subscription; it complements antivirus software, does not replace it, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.
