Error 0x009AC563 is not defined in Microsoft’s published Windows error-code references. The hexadecimal value by itself does not identify a Windows Update failure, driver problem, malware infection, activation issue, or damaged registry. It may be generated by a particular application, installer, device, driver, or vendor component.
The reliable fix therefore starts by finding the screen or program that produced the code. Record the complete message, application or window name, and what Windows was doing when it appeared. Then use the matching repair path below. Restarting, removing recently added hardware, checking drivers and updates, and repairing system files are safe first actions, but a Device Manager message needs a different approach from a third-party application crash.

What error 0x009AC563 means
Microsoft’s general system-error guidance explains that codes can occur in many parts of Windows and require investigation in their programmatic and runtime context. Microsoft also notes that third-party services and applications can generate their own codes. No authoritative Microsoft reference identified by this guide defines the exact value 0x009AC563, and an exact-value web search does not establish a single known cause.
That uncertainty matters. Treating the number as a universal Windows error can lead you to remove the wrong driver, reset a working component, or blame Windows Update when the message actually belongs to an application. The originating screen, the full text beside the number, and the event immediately before it are more useful than the hexadecimal value alone.

What the code does not prove
- It does not prove that Windows Update is broken.
- It does not prove that a particular device driver is corrupt.
- It does not prove that malware is present.
- It does not prove that the registry, activation, or a system DLL is damaged.
- It does not identify a repair command or a specific replacement part without more context.
Record the context before changing anything
Write down the complete error text exactly as shown, including punctuation and any file name, service name, or application title. Take a screenshot if the message may disappear. Note whether it appeared during startup, sign-in, a restart, Windows Update, a software installation, Device Manager, a blue-screen recovery, or inside a third-party application.
Also record what changed shortly before the first occurrence:
- A graphics, audio, network, Bluetooth, printer, storage, or chipset driver update.
- New RAM, a USB device, docking station, external drive, printer, or other hardware.
- A Windows quality or feature update, a BIOS or firmware update, or a pending restart.
- A newly installed, updated, or removed application.
- A power interruption, forced shutdown, or disk-space shortage.
Capture the time of the message and look for entries at the same time in Event Viewer. Right-click Start, choose Event Viewer, then inspect Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application. Sort by date and time, and open warnings or errors that coincide with the message. For an application-specific problem, the program’s own log folder or support screen may contain a more descriptive error than Windows does.

- Restart normally. Save work, choose Start > Power > Restart, and test the same action once Windows loads. A restart clears a transient process or pending update state without removing files.
- Disconnect nonessential external hardware. Shut down if the problem began after connecting a USB device, dock, external disk, printer, or other new hardware. Unplug that item, leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection needed for testing, then start Windows again. If the error stops, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the trigger.
- Check Device Manager. Press Windows key + X, select Device Manager, and look for a yellow exclamation mark or an Unknown device. Open the device’s Properties and read the General tab, including the status text and any displayed code. The exact device name is essential if you need the manufacturer’s support channel.
- Install pending Windows updates. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when requested. Do not interrupt the restart phase.
- Install current device drivers. Prioritize the device implicated by the message or by Device Manager. Use Windows Update’s optional driver area when available, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model and Windows edition. Avoid drivers for a similar but different model.
If Windows cannot remain running long enough to perform these checks, use Safe Mode. Hold Shift while selecting Restart, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. If the error disappears in Safe Mode, a startup application, service, or driver is more likely than a basic Windows component; undo the most recent change first.

If Device Manager shows the code
Device Manager codes describe the device instance shown on your computer, so do not choose a fix based only on the hexadecimal value. In Device Manager, expand the relevant category, double-click the device, and read the complete status on the General tab. Record the manufacturer, model, and hardware identifiers from Details > Hardware Ids if the name is generic.
Update the driver
- On the device’s Driver tab, select Update Driver.
- Try Search automatically for drivers. If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, compare the installed version with the current version listed by the device manufacturer.
- If you downloaded a manufacturer package, choose Browse my computer for drivers and point Windows to the extracted folder, or run the vendor’s installer exactly as documented.
- Restart and test the original action.
Reinstall or roll back after a recent change
If the error began immediately after a driver update, open Properties > Driver and select Roll Back Driver when that button is available. Otherwise select Uninstall Device, restart, and let Windows redetect the hardware. Use this only after recording the device name and ensuring you can obtain a compatible driver; removing a network or storage driver can make later recovery less convenient.
Microsoft’s Device Manager list is not exhaustive. If the exact code is not documented there, Microsoft advises contacting the hardware device vendor’s technical support or Microsoft Support. Give them the full status text, hardware identifier, Windows edition, driver version, and the changes that preceded the failure.
If it appears during Windows Update or software installation
Prepare the update
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices and external drives.
- Confirm that Windows is not waiting for a restart in Settings > Windows Update (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update (Windows 10). Restart before trying the update again.
- Sign in with an account that has permission to install updates, connect the PC to reliable power, and keep enough free space for the update and its temporary files.
- Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter. In Windows 11, use Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. In Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update, then run the troubleshooter. Label names can vary slightly by build.
Retry the update or installer after each change so you know which action altered the result. If the same code appears only in one third-party installer while Windows Update works normally, treat it as an application or vendor-installer problem rather than a general Windows Update diagnosis.

Repair Windows component and system files
Use the following Microsoft-documented sequence when the failure is update-related or Windows files may be corrupted. It requires an elevated command prompt and an internet connection may be needed for component repair.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command and wait for it to reach 100 percent:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- When DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow- Wait until System File Checker reports its result. Do not close the window while verification is in progress.
- Restart Windows and repeat the action that produced 0x009AC563.
DISM repairs the Windows component store used for servicing; SFC checks protected system files against that store. If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact message instead of repeatedly running it. A pending restart, insufficient disk space, servicing failure, or deeper storage problem may need attention first.
If the code accompanies a blue screen or repeated restart
A blue-screen stop code and 0x009AC563 may be separate messages. Photograph both screens and note which one appears first. Start with Safe Mode if normal startup loops. Remove newly installed hardware, then check Device Manager for driver warnings, install current Windows and device updates, and verify that the system drive has adequate free space.

When the problem began immediately after a driver, application, or update change, use System Restore if a restore point exists: open Windows Recovery options, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore, select a point dated before the change, and follow the prompts. System Restore can remove recently installed drivers or applications while leaving personal documents intact, but it does not replace a current backup and may not be available on every PC.

If Safe Mode also fails, use the recovery environment’s Startup Repair or another recovery option appropriate to the backup and recovery state of the computer. Do not choose a reset or reinstall until you have copied important files and confirmed that less destructive options are exhausted.

Close and reopen the application after a normal restart, then check whether the message appears only when opening a particular file, account, plug-in, or feature. Review the application’s own logs and documentation for the complete text surrounding 0x009AC563. Microsoft explicitly notes that third-party services and applications can generate their own error codes, so Windows commands may not repair an application-specific condition.
Install the application’s current update from its official vendor, temporarily disable only a newly added plug-in or integration, and test with a new document or profile when the program supports that option. Before uninstalling, export settings or back up project files. If the application alone fails while Windows, Device Manager, and other programs work normally, send the vendor the application version, Windows build, complete message, timestamp, and relevant log entries.

Escalate when the code returns after restart, Safe Mode, current updates, and the context-appropriate repair, or when it prevents startup, data access, or a critical work task. The most useful support package contains:
- The exact error text and a screenshot.
- The originating window, application, device, installer, or recovery screen.
- Windows edition and build, and whether the PC is Windows 11 or Windows 10.
- Recent hardware, driver, software, firmware, or update changes.
- The time of failure and matching Event Viewer or application-log entries.
- Device Manager status text and driver version when hardware is involved.
- The results of DISM, SFC, the Windows Update troubleshooter, and Safe Mode testing.
For an unlisted Device Manager code, contact the hardware manufacturer or Microsoft Support rather than guessing at a replacement component. For a code owned by a third-party application, contact that application’s vendor. Keep the original logs; do not clear them before support reviews the event.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance records that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If the affected PC still runs Windows 10, distinguish that unsupported operating-system state from the separate cause of 0x009AC563. Lack of ongoing Windows 10 support can affect update availability and security, but it does not identify what generated this particular code. Check hardware and application compatibility before planning an upgrade, and maintain a backup before any major operating-system change.
The key diagnostic fact remains where the number appeared. Once that context is known, apply the matching branch above, make one reversible change at a time, and preserve the logs if the error persists.
