What error 0x009AABC6 means
Windows error codes are hexadecimal identifiers generated by a particular component. The characters 0x009AABC6 alone do not reveal whether the source is Windows Update, activation, a device driver, an application, storage, or a stop error. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 and Windows 10 support pages do not identify this code, and assigning it to a specific cause without the surrounding message would be speculation.

Before you start: capture the evidence
Take a screenshot or photograph of the complete message, not just the code. Copy the title of the window, any file name, and any secondary code. Write down the date and time, what you were doing, and whether the issue began after a Windows update, driver installation, new peripheral, application install, firmware change, or power interruption. This prevents a generic repair from hiding the information needed to identify the originating component.

- Confirm whether the problem occurs once or on every restart or update attempt.
- Record whether Windows reaches the desktop, Safe Mode, or the recovery environment.
- If an application is named, note its exact name and version.
- Back up important personal files before disk repairs, System Restore, or other recovery operations.
Step 1: disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down Windows and unplug equipment that is not required to start the computer. Remove USB drives, printers, scanners, docks, external disks, card readers, and similar peripherals. Leave only the display, keyboard, mouse, network connection if needed, and the internal hardware required to boot. Turn the computer on, reproduce the action that generated 0x009AABC6, and check whether the message returns.
If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time and retry after each connection. The device connected immediately before the recurrence is a useful lead, but it is not proof that the hardware itself is defective; its cable, port, firmware, or driver may be involved.
Check Device Manager
- Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand categories that match the equipment you disconnected, such as Printers, Display adapters, Network adapters, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Storage controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or a device listed as unknown. Open its Properties and read the Device status message.
- For a recently changed device, try Update driver. If the error began immediately after an update, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when that option is available.
- If the device prevents normal startup, right-click it and choose Disable device or Uninstall device, restart, and test. Reinstall the manufacturer’s current driver only after Windows is stable.
Do not disable unrelated devices at random. If you are unsure which entry corresponds to the failing hardware, leave it enabled and continue with the general checks.

Use this step when the code appears while checking for, downloading, or installing Windows updates. The path differs by Windows version.

Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any correction the troubleshooter offers, then restart the computer.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply the suggested correction and restart.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check again.
If the troubleshooter reports that it changed a setting but the same code returns, continue rather than repeatedly running the tool. Repeated failures usually require checking storage, system files, drivers, or a recent change.
Step 3: test Safe Mode and review recent changes
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If 0x009AABC6 does not appear there, a third-party startup program or nonessential driver becomes more likely; if it appears there too, the problem is more likely to involve Windows, storage, or core hardware.
Enter Safe Mode from a working desktop
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- After the restart, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- At the numbered menu, press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
Retry only the action that produced the error. Do not use Safe Mode as a permanent working environment. Restart normally when the test is complete.

Install pending updates and check storage
While Windows is operating normally, install available Windows updates and restart. Confirm that the system drive has adequate free space for the update or application involved; a nearly full drive can prevent temporary files, servicing operations, or recovery data from being written. Remove or move personal files only after backing them up, and do not delete unknown system folders.

Undo a recent change
Review software, drivers, peripherals, and firmware installed immediately before the first occurrence. Temporarily remove a recently installed application, disconnect a new device, or roll back a recently updated driver. If the error started after a major change, use System Restore as described below rather than making several unrelated changes at once.
Step 4: check the disk and repair the Windows image
Run these commands from an elevated Command Prompt. They address different layers: CHKDSK checks the file system and disk, while DISM repairs the Windows component image used by servicing and updates.
Run CHKDSK
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
chkdsk C: /scanand press Enter. ReplaceC:only if Windows is installed on another volume. - Read the result. If Windows reports errors that require an offline repair, run
chkdsk C: /f. - If prompted to schedule the check for the next restart, type
Y, press Enter, and restart. Allow the check to finish without powering off the computer.
Back up important files before fixing file-system errors. If CHKDSK reports recurring errors, bad sectors, or an inability to complete, treat that as a storage-health warning and investigate the drive rather than repeatedly forcing repairs.

- Open an elevated Command Prompt again if it is not still open.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. - Wait for the operation to reach completion. It may appear to pause for an extended period.
- Restart Windows after DISM reports completion, then retry the operation that generated 0x009AABC6.
If either command returns a separate error, preserve the exact text. That secondary message is more useful for escalation than the original hexadecimal code by itself.

Step 5: check drivers, firmware, memory, and security
When the code accompanies a crash, stop screen, black screen, or unexpected restart, broaden the checks beyond Windows Update.
- Drivers: In Device Manager, inspect warning icons and the driver date and version for display, storage, chipset, network, and USB devices. Obtain replacement drivers from the hardware manufacturer or computer maker, matching the exact model and Windows edition.
- Firmware: Check the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support instructions for BIOS, UEFI, storage, dock, or peripheral firmware updates. Keep the system connected to reliable power and follow the manufacturer’s recovery instructions; an interrupted firmware update can prevent startup.
- Memory: Run the hardware or memory diagnostic supplied by Windows or the computer manufacturer, following its prompts and recording any reported failures.
- Malware: Run a scan with your installed security software, especially if crashes began with suspicious downloads, unexpected browser behavior, or unauthorized changes. A malware scan is one part of stop-error troubleshooting, not evidence that this particular code is caused by malware.
Change one category at a time and test after each change. Installing several drivers or utilities together makes it difficult to identify which change helped or introduced a new failure.

If it appears during Windows Update or setup
Start with hardware disconnection, the version-appropriate Windows Update troubleshooter, free-space verification, CHKDSK, and DISM. If setup fails after a restart, note the stage and percentage, then check Device Manager and recently installed storage or chipset drivers. Do not assume the code identifies Windows Update merely because it appeared during an update; the update process can expose an underlying disk, driver, or servicing problem.

If it appears at sign-in or activation
Confirm that the computer is connected to the internet, that you are using the intended Microsoft account, and that the installed Windows edition matches the license you are trying to activate. Record the complete activation text and edition before changing product-key or account settings. Microsoft’s activation guidance states: “If you’re getting an error code that isn’t listed on this page, contact customer support.” Because 0x009AABC6 is not listed in the current support material, use Microsoft support with the complete message rather than treating it as a verified activation code.
If it appears in an application
Identify the application and operation shown in the dialog. Restart Windows, install the application’s current update from its official publisher, and check whether the problem occurs with a different file or account. If the dialog began after a Windows, driver, or peripheral change, reverse that change or test in Safe Mode. Keep the application name, version, timestamp, and full dialog text for the publisher’s support team.
If it appears on a blue or black screen
Photograph the stop-screen text before restarting if possible. Disconnect nonessential devices, try Safe Mode, and run the driver, firmware, memory, storage, and malware checks above. If Windows cannot reach the desktop, use the Windows Recovery Environment to access Startup Settings, System Restore, or other recovery tools. Avoid repeatedly hard-powering the computer while CHKDSK or a recovery operation is running.
Use System Restore or another recovery option
If the error continues after the checks above and began after a known software, driver, or configuration change, System Restore can return Windows system files and settings to an earlier restore point without intentionally deleting personal documents. Open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore, choose a restore point dated before the first occurrence, review the affected programs, and complete the restart. Restore points are not guaranteed to exist and do not replace a personal backup.

The available choices can include Startup Settings, System Restore, and other recovery options. Read each warning carefully. A reset or reinstall can remove applications and, depending on the selected option, personal data, so back up files and use those choices only after less destructive options fail.
When to escalate the problem
Escalate when the code survives the manual sequence, returns in Safe Mode, is accompanied by disk or memory failures, or prevents Windows from starting. Provide support with:
- The exact text surrounding
0x009AABC6. - Whether it appeared in Windows Update, activation, sign-in, an application, setup, or a stop screen.
- Windows edition and version, computer model, and affected device.
- The date and time of occurrence and any recent hardware, driver, firmware, or software change.
- Device Manager status text, CHKDSK and DISM results, and relevant Event Viewer entries.
To review event details, right-click the Start button, open Event Viewer, and inspect Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application around the recorded timestamp. Copy the event source, event ID, and general message; do not rely on the hexadecimal code alone.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That end date covers free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes. It does not establish that support status caused 0x009AABC6, but it affects the options available if the computer is still running Windows 10. The troubleshooting sequence above applies to both Windows 10 and Windows 11; for ongoing security and support, determine whether the hardware can move to a supported Windows release or whether another supported plan is appropriate.
