An exact-code result associates the value with a Win32 COLORREF representation of the RGB color #05F999. If you saw the value in a color, theme, interface, source-code, or configuration field, it may be data rather than a fault.
If it appeared in an error dialog, installer, update screen, or crash report, do not apply a generic “fix” yet. Windows error-code troubleshooting depends on the program that produced the value, the complete message, and the log entry at the same time. Identify that context first, then follow the matching branch below.

What 0x00999F50 means
Microsoft’s Win32 documentation defines COLORREF as a value used to specify an RGB color and documents the byte layout as 0x00bbggrr. In that format, the high-order byte is zero and the remaining bytes hold color components. A hexadecimal value that follows this pattern can legitimately appear in a user-interface setting, theme file, drawing API call, or application configuration without representing an error.
Microsoft’s system-error guidance also warns that codes can be returned by software outside Windows itself, or by a function far removed from the code that eventually handles the problem. The literal token alone therefore cannot tell you which component failed. No reviewed Microsoft source lists 0x00999F50 as a defined Windows 10 or Windows 11 system error.

The practical consequence is important: there is no evidence-based registry edit, driver replacement, hardware purchase, or universal command that can be called a specific fix for this token. The correct repair follows the application or component that produced it.
Collect the evidence before changing anything

Copy the complete message
Write down the entire dialog, not just the hexadecimal value. Include the title-bar text, the application or installer name, the executable or DLL named in the message, any decimal value, and buttons or actions offered by the dialog. A screenshot can preserve punctuation and capitalization that are easy to mistype. If the message disappears, reproduce it once and capture it again rather than relying on memory.

Record where and when it appeared
Note whether the value appeared during Windows startup, sign-in, Windows Update, a driver installation, a game launch, printing, browsing, or a custom program. Record the date and exact time, whether the event happens every time or only once, and what you did immediately beforehand. This location determines which log and support channel are relevant.

Check Event Viewer
Press
Win+R, entereventvwr.msc, and press Enter. In Event Viewer, open Windows Logs and inspect Application for application crashes or installer failures; inspect System for startup, service, or device events. Use Filter Current Log… to narrow the time range around the error. Open entries at the matching time and copy the Source, Event ID, level, and text in the General and Details tabs. Several entries may belong to one failure, so retain the surrounding warnings as well as the error. -
Read the affected program’s own log
Many installers, games, browsers, printer utilities, and development tools keep logs separate from Event Viewer. Look in the program’s settings for a diagnostics or logging option, then consult its documented log folder. Match entries by timestamp and preserve the original file before editing or deleting anything. If the program has a crash-report window, export or copy that report in full.

Decide whether the value is a color/configuration field
If the token is beside a color, brush, pen, theme, window, or rendering setting, treat it as data first. Microsoft’s documented
COLORREFlayout is0x00bbggrr; the producing application may display or store the bytes in its own notation. Change the value through that application’s interface or documented configuration format, and keep a backup of the original file. Do not delete unrelated registry entries or system files simply because the value looks unusual.Rank #3

Use Microsoft’s lookup and debugging guidance only for a suspected system code
When the complete message identifies a Win32 or Windows system error, submit the numeric code to Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool. Microsoft also points developers and administrators to Debugging Tools for Windows and the relevant protocol documentation. These resources are useful only when you know which API, service, or protocol returned the value; a bare token cannot be interpreted reliably by a lookup.

Identify the producing vendor
Microsoft explicitly notes that third-party services and applications can generate their own error codes. If the source is not a Windows component, contact that product’s publisher with the full message, version, Windows edition, reproduction steps, timestamp, and matching log entries. Avoid sending only
0x00999F50, because support staff cannot distinguish a color setting from an application failure without the surrounding context.
Choose the repair branch that matches the source
If it is in a theme, UI, or configuration value
Open the program that owns the setting and use its color or appearance controls to replace the value with a documented value. If the setting is loaded from a text or JSON/XML configuration file, close the program first, copy the file as a backup, and follow that product’s syntax rules. A malformed value may prevent the program from starting, so restore the backup if the change produces a new failure. Do not treat a color value as proof that Windows itself is damaged.

If it is in a Windows error dialog
Preserve the exact dialog text and identify the executable, service, or operation named there. Check the corresponding Event Viewer entry and use Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool or debugging documentation when the message labels the value as a Win32/system code. Apply only a repair that matches the identified component. For example, an application-specific failure should be handled through that application’s repair, update, or support process, while a genuine Windows component requires evidence from its system event and documented error code.
If it appears during Windows Update or startup
Record the update name, restart stage, or service named in the message, then compare the timestamp with the System and Application logs. A startup screen can be generated by a service, scheduled task, security product, driver installer, or another program; the location alone does not prove that Windows generated the code. Once the responsible service or program is identified, use its official recovery instructions or vendor support channel. Do not remove startup entries at random, because doing so can hide the source without correcting it.

If it appears during a driver or device installation
Capture the device name, installer name, driver version, and the complete message. Check the installer’s log and Event Viewer for the same time. The hexadecimal token is not, by itself, evidence that a particular driver or device is defective. Install or roll back a driver only when the device manufacturer’s documentation or the matched log identifies that action as appropriate.
If it belongs to a game, browser, printer utility, or custom application
Use the program’s repair, update, reset, or reinstall procedure only after confirming that program is the producer. Back up application data and settings before a reset or uninstall. Send the publisher the exact version, Windows edition, reproduction steps, full dialog, and logs. A vendor may define 0x00999F50 for its own purposes even though Microsoft does not define it as a Windows system error.
What not to do
- Do not run a registry cleaner because the value is unfamiliar. There is no evidence that this token represents a damaged registry entry, and deleting unrelated keys can create additional failures.
- Do not replace drivers at random. A driver change is justified only when the originating device or installer and its logs point to a driver problem.
- Do not buy hardware based on this code. The value does not establish a failing disk, memory module, graphics card, printer, or other component.
- Do not assume the number proves malware or a Windows infection. The same-looking hexadecimal token can be ordinary color/configuration data or an application-defined value.
- Do not use a generic “one-click” repair before collecting context. An automated change can erase useful logs or alter settings that were unrelated to the message.
Information to include when asking for help
Support requests are most effective when they let another person reproduce and classify the event. Include:
- The exact text and title of the dialog, including every code and named file.
- The application, installer, service, or Windows operation that was running.
- Your Windows edition and version, plus the affected application’s version.
- What action triggered the message and whether it repeats after a restart.
- The date and time, the matching Event Viewer source and Event ID, and relevant application-log text.
- Whether the value appeared in a color/theme/configuration field or as an error message.
Remove passwords, license keys, personal documents, and other private data before sharing logs. Keep the original files locally so you can provide them again if the publisher requests more detail.
When there is no code-specific fix
Sometimes the investigation shows that 0x00999F50 was a color value, a harmless configuration constant, or a vendor token with no public documentation. In that situation, the correct outcome is not to force a Windows repair. Restore the application’s documented setting, continue with the publisher’s support process, or monitor the event if it no longer recurs. If a real failure remains, the full message and log context—not the isolated hexadecimal string—are what determine the next safe step.
