What error 0x00993450 means
The hexadecimal value 0x00993450 is not defined in the authoritative Microsoft material available for this issue. The number alone does not identify a virus, licensing failure, damaged registry entry, defective hardware, or any other specific cause. Windows and third-party programs can display hexadecimal values in their own dialogs, and the same-looking code can have different meanings when it comes from different software.

That uncertainty matters because a registry edit or a command copied from an unrelated error page can make the underlying problem worse. Do not assume the code is a Windows stop error simply because it appears on a blue screen, and do not assume it is malware because it appears in a warning dialog. The originating process, the full text, and the event recorded at the same time are the evidence needed to choose a repair.

Capture the context before changing anything
Record the details while the message is visible. A screenshot is useful, but copy the text as well if the dialog allows it. Include the title bar, the complete sentence around the code, buttons such as Retry or Cancel, and the name of any application or installer.

- Note when it appears. Record whether it occurs during startup, sign-in, Windows Update, a Windows 10 or 11 upgrade, program installation, activation, shutdown, or while using one named application.
- Record the software identity. Write down the application name and version, installer filename, publisher shown in the dialog, and your Windows edition, version, and build. Press Win+R, enter
winver, and select OK to see the Windows version and build. - Check Event Viewer. Right-click Start, select Event Viewer, and open Windows Logs > Application. Check entries at the exact time of the message, then repeat under Windows Logs > System. Open a matching error and note the source, event ID, faulting application or module, and description.
- Preserve the sequence. Write down what happened immediately before the first appearance: a driver installation, Windows update, new USB device, security product change, application update, or power interruption.
If Event Viewer names a process or module, that name is more useful than the hexadecimal value. Search support for the named publisher or component and quote the complete event text when contacting support.
Choose the troubleshooting path by symptom
Use the location of the message to select the least disruptive path. Do not apply every remedy at random; a startup failure and an error inside one application have different likely triggers.

Undo a recent hardware, driver, or software change
Microsoft’s general stop-error guidance notes that a hardware device, its driver, or software might have caused a failure. If the code began immediately after a change, reverse that change before making unrelated edits.
Remove newly connected hardware
- Shut down Windows normally if possible.
- Disconnect nonessential USB drives, docks, printers, cameras, hubs, and other recently added devices. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and required network connection attached.
- Start Windows and repeat the action that produced the message.
- If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time and test after each connection. The device present when the message returns is a useful lead.
For an internal component that cannot be safely removed, do not open the computer while it is powered. Use the manufacturer’s service procedure or qualified assistance.

Roll back or uninstall a recent driver
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the changed device, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties > Driver.
- If Roll Back Driver is available, use it when the problem started after an update. If it is unavailable, select Uninstall Device, restart, and allow Windows or the device manufacturer’s installer to restore a known-good driver.
Do not delete driver packages or disable unrelated devices merely because they have warning icons. Record the device name and existing driver version first. For a replacement, use Windows Update or the hardware maker’s official support channel rather than a repackaged download.
Undo a recent application change
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find the application installed or updated immediately before the first error.
- Use its Modify, Repair, or Uninstall option when available. Follow the publisher’s instructions if the program has its own repair utility.
- Restart and test the original action. If the application is needed, install a current version from the publisher after confirming that the setup package matches your Windows edition and processor architecture.
Try Safe Mode to separate startup software from Windows
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If 0x00993450 does not appear there, a startup application, optional service, or third-party driver becomes more likely. If it still appears in Safe Mode, the cause may be a core Windows component, a required driver, or the same application launched manually.
When Windows still reaches the desktop
- Hold Shift while selecting Start > Power > Restart.
- At Choose an option, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the numbered list appears, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode. Choose 5 or F5 only when you need networking.
- Repeat the action that normally triggers the message. Do not install unrelated software while testing.
What to do if Safe Mode works
- Uninstall or roll back the most recent driver or application.
- Disable a recently added startup item, restart normally, and test again.
- Use the identified application’s repair or update process.
- Review Event Viewer after the next normal boot to see whether the same source returns.
To leave Safe Mode, restart Windows normally. If it repeatedly returns to Safe Mode, open System Configuration, select the Boot tab, clear Safe boot, select Apply, and restart.
If Windows cannot reach the sign-in screen
Interrupting startup twice can cause Windows Recovery Environment to appear automatically on the next boot. You can also boot from Windows installation or recovery media. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options and use Startup Settings to reach Safe Mode. If the recovery menus do not appear, use installation media created for the same Windows release and select Repair your computer rather than starting a new installation.

Install pending Windows and hardware updates
Microsoft recommends applying current driver and cumulative updates when troubleshooting repeated stop or startup failures. Updates can correct a known incompatibility, but install them through trusted channels and keep a record of what changed.
- Open Settings > Windows Update in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when requested.
- Return to Windows Update and open Advanced options > Optional updates when offered. Review optional driver updates by device name before installing them.
- For a device that still fails, compare the installed driver with the current package on the device manufacturer’s official support page. Download the package for the exact model and Windows version.
If the error began immediately after a Windows or driver update, use the relevant rollback option instead of repeatedly reinstalling the same update. In Settings > Windows Update > Update history, identify the update date and name so support can correlate it with Event Viewer.
When the code appears during an upgrade or installation
Microsoft advises trying general upgrade fixes before searching for a specific code. Start with the simple isolation steps because setup can fail when an external device, security software, insufficient free space, or a damaged installation path interferes.

- Restart Windows, sign in with an account that has administrator rights, and retry the upgrade or installer.
- Close other applications and ensure the computer remains connected to reliable power.
- Confirm that the installer came from the software publisher or Microsoft and that its Windows edition and architecture match the computer.
- If the same message returns, record the setup stage, installer filename and version, complete text, and Event Viewer entries. Do not apply a registry “fix” written for a different code.
For a third-party installer, the publisher is the correct source for a code-specific interpretation. For a Windows upgrade, provide Microsoft support with the screenshot, build number, setup stage, and logs or events requested by its general troubleshooting process.

Use Windows Recovery when startup fails
If Windows cannot start normally, use recovery tools in order from least destructive to more disruptive. Keep personal files backed up whenever possible, and understand that a recovery option can remove applications or recent changes.
Startup Repair
From Windows Recovery Environment, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Select the Windows installation and let the tool complete. Restart and check whether the original startup sequence now reaches sign-in. Startup Repair targets boot-related problems; it will not identify an unknown code produced later by an application.
System Restore
If a restore point predates the first appearance, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Select a point by date and inspect the affected programs list before confirming. System Restore changes system files, drivers, and installed programs but is not a substitute for a personal backup.

When the built-in recovery partition is unavailable, boot from Windows installation media and select Repair your computer. The Advanced options menu provides documented startup and command-line recovery methods. Use commands only when you know the Windows volume, boot configuration, and exact purpose of each command; an incorrect command can make the installation unbootable. If you cannot verify those details, stop at Startup Repair or System Restore and seek support.
Check whether the problem is account-specific
A message that appears for one Windows account but not another points toward a per-user setting, startup item, or application profile rather than a system-wide failure. Create a temporary local test account under Settings > Accounts > Other users (Windows 11) or Family & other users (Windows 10), sign in, and repeat the same action. Do not move personal files or delete the original profile during this test.
If both accounts produce the code, compare Event Viewer and recent system changes instead of rebuilding the profile. If only the original account fails, repair or reset the affected application profile and check its per-user startup entries before considering a profile replacement.
What not to do
- Do not label 0x00993450 a virus without a named process, security alert, or scan result. The code itself proves none of those things.
- Do not run registry cleaners or delete registry values because a generic page associates the number with them.
- Do not download a “one-click” repair program that claims to recognize this exact code but does not identify the originating component.
- Do not repeatedly force power-off during updates or recovery. A forced shutdown can add filesystem or update damage to the original problem.
- Do not install a driver for a similar-looking model. Confirm the exact manufacturer, model, Windows version, and architecture.
When to escalate and what to send
Escalate when the code returns after Safe Mode testing, rollback, updates, and the appropriate recovery step, or when Windows cannot remain usable long enough to collect evidence. Contact Microsoft for a Windows component, update, upgrade, or startup failure; contact the named application or hardware publisher when Event Viewer identifies its process or device.
Send one organized report rather than only the hexadecimal value:
- A screenshot and the complete dialog text.
- Windows edition, version, and build from
winver. - The application, installer, service, or device involved and its version or driver version.
- The exact time of the failure and the steps that reproduce it.
- Matching entries from Windows Logs > Application and System, including source, event ID, faulting module, and description.
- Recent hardware, driver, Windows, or application changes.
- Whether Safe Mode, another user account, or disconnected external hardware changes the result.
That information lets support identify the component instead of guessing from an undefined number. Until the source is known, the safest conclusion is that 0x00993450 is an unidentified application, setup, or system message rather than a diagnosed Windows condition.
