Error 0x0098E079 is not defined in the Microsoft support material reviewed, so there is no trustworthy one-size-fits-all repair. The correct fix depends on where the value appears: during Windows Update or an installation, on a recurring crash or stop-code screen, while Windows is starting, or during activation. Follow the matching branch below, and note what happened immediately before the message appeared.
First identify where 0x0098E079 appears
The screen and timing are more useful than the hexadecimal value itself. A code shown by Windows Update needs a different process from one shown before sign-in. Use this table to select the safest starting point.

| Where you see the code | Typical clue | Start with | Does Windows start? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update or program installation | The message appears while downloading, installing, or rolling back an update | Update and installation checks | Usually yes |
| Recurring crash or stop-code screen | The computer restarts unexpectedly or shows a blue or black error screen | Hardware, Safe Mode, driver, storage, and restore checks | Often, at least intermittently |
| Startup or boot | The code appears before the sign-in screen, or Windows never reaches the desktop | Windows Recovery and Startup Repair | No, or only after repeated attempts |
| Activation | The value appears in Activation settings or when validating a license | Confirm the edition and run the Activation troubleshooter | Yes |
Write down the exact capitalization, any surrounding text, and the application or screen that displayed it. Also record the last change you made: a Windows update, new device, driver, application, hardware replacement, or restore operation. Do not infer a cause from the code alone; its exact value is not documented by the authoritative Windows guidance available for this issue.

Prepare before repairing Windows
- If the desktop opens, copy irreplaceable documents to another drive or a trusted cloud location before using recovery tools.
- Photograph or transcribe the complete message, including any file name, stop-code text, or button labels.
- Disconnect nonessential USB drives, docks, printers, cameras, and other external hardware. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and the device needed to perform the repair connected.
- Keep the computer connected to reliable power. An interruption during an update or recovery operation can create additional startup problems.
- If you recently added hardware or software, record its name and installation date. That information determines whether removing or rolling back the change is sensible.
- Have a second working computer and a USB flash drive available if Windows cannot boot. Microsoft uses installation or recovery media for the supported Startup Repair path.

1. Remove nonessential external hardware
Shut down if possible, unplug external storage and other accessories, and start the update again. A device that is not required for the installation can introduce a driver or detection failure. Reconnect accessories one at a time after the installation completes so that a newly repeated error can be associated with a specific device.
2. Check Device Manager for warning icons
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand the device categories and look for a yellow warning symbol. Open a flagged device’s Properties window and read the status on the General tab. Note the device name and status text before changing anything. If the error returns after the update, the device and its driver are useful evidence for support.
3. Repair disk errors using Windows’ drive-checking tools
Open File Explorer, select This PC, right-click the Windows drive, choose Properties, open Tools, and select Check in the Error checking area. Follow the prompts and restart if Windows schedules a check. Do not interrupt a scheduled disk check.
4. Try a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with only essential services, helping distinguish an installation problem caused by background software. Press Windows+R, enter msconfig, and press Enter. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all. On the Startup tab, open Task Manager and disable enabled third-party startup items. Restart and retry the update or installation.
After testing, return to msconfig and choose Normal startup on the General tab, then re-enable the services and startup items you need. Leaving the computer permanently in a diagnostic startup state can prevent expected software from loading.
5. Repair the Windows component store with DISM
Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) from the Start menu and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to reach completion, even if progress appears to pause. Restart Windows and try the update again. If DISM reports that it cannot complete, keep the full message; it is more actionable than the hexadecimal code by itself.

Microsoft’s installation guidance includes temporarily disabling third-party antivirus software because it can interfere with setup. Use that product’s own pause or protection setting, complete the installation, restart, and turn protection back on immediately afterward. Windows Security and any other security components should not be left disabled longer than necessary.
7. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter. Apply any suggested repair, restart, and test the update once more.

If the code accompanies a recurring crash or stop-code screen
Use this route when Windows restarts unexpectedly, freezes and reboots, or repeatedly displays a blue or black stop-code screen. Microsoft notes that, in most cases, an unexpected restart is resolved by the restart itself; recurring failures require the checks below.
1. Remove hardware added just before the crashes
Power off and disconnect a newly installed expansion card, USB device, dock, printer, or other accessory. Start Windows with the previous hardware configuration. If the crashes stop, reconnect one item at a time and check for a matching driver or firmware update from the device manufacturer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers so you can determine whether ordinary startup software is involved. If the desktop opens, hold Shift while selecting Restart. From the recovery screen choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose the Safe Mode option. If Windows cannot reach the desktop, use the same Startup Settings route from Windows Recovery after two or more interrupted starts.
Use Safe Mode to remove a recently installed application or device driver only when the timing and symptoms point to it. Record the change and restart normally to test. Safe Mode is a diagnostic environment, not a permanent operating mode.
3. Inspect and update drivers in Device Manager
Open Device Manager and inspect categories related to the hardware involved in the crash. A warning icon, a device that disappeared, or a driver installed immediately before the failures is significant. Use the device’s Driver tab to review its details and available update or rollback options. Restart after a driver change and check whether the same stop-code screen returns.
4. Check available disk space
Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11, or Settings > System > Storage in Windows 10, and inspect the Windows drive. Keep adequate free space for updates, temporary files, and crash recovery. Remove or move files only after confirming that they are backed up; do not delete Windows folders manually.

Open Settings > Windows Update in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10. Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when asked. If the update itself triggers the error, return to the update branch rather than repeatedly forcing the same installation.
6. Use System Restore when the problem began after a change
Search for Recovery, open Recovery, and select Open System Restore. Choose a restore point dated before the crashes and review the affected programs before confirming. System Restore changes system files, drivers, and settings; it is not a substitute for backing up personal files and it does not erase the need to reinstall software added afterward.

1. Open the Windows Recovery Environment
- Insert the Windows installation or recovery USB and start the affected computer.
- At the Windows installation screen, choose Next.
- Select Repair your computer, not the option that begins a new installation.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
Startup Repair examines common startup problems and attempts a supported automatic repair. Allow it to finish, then remove the USB and restart to test the internal Windows installation.

2. Use BOOTREC only for an appropriate boot-code problem
From Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt, Microsoft documents these commands for appropriate boot-code problems:
BOOTREC /FIXMBR
BOOTREC /FIXBOOT
These commands are not a general repair for an unknown error value. Use them only when the startup symptoms and recovery information indicate a boot-code issue. Enter each command separately, wait for its response, and record any error text. If the system uses a configuration or partition arrangement you do not understand, stop rather than experimenting with additional boot commands.
3. If repair does not restore startup
Return to Advanced options and use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists. If no restore point is available, preserve the exact screen message, the Startup Repair result, and any Command Prompt responses before contacting Microsoft support or a qualified technician. Repeatedly interrupting startup or reinstalling Windows without a backup can make data recovery harder.
If 0x0098E079 appears during activation
Activation errors need the installed Windows edition and license state, not a driver or disk repair. Confirm the edition first:

- Run the Activation troubleshooter and follow its prompts.
- If the troubleshooter does not identify the code, contact Microsoft support with the exact value, edition, and the screen where it appeared.
Do not assume an activation message is an update failure. Keep the two workflows separate so that you do not change boot settings or remove hardware without a reason.
When the value appears in a different context
If 0x0098E079 appears inside a particular application, a browser page, or a vendor-specific installer rather than in Windows Update, Recovery, a stop-code screen, or Activation settings, capture the application’s name and the complete dialog. The hexadecimal string alone is not enough to identify the subsystem. Check that application’s own support instructions and contact its publisher; do not apply boot commands merely because the value begins with “0x”.
Windows 10 support and what it changes
Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That lifecycle date does not prove that 0x0098E079 is caused by the end of support, but it does affect the long-term decision. If the computer meets Windows 11 requirements, plan a supported migration after the immediate error is resolved. If it cannot be upgraded, document the device’s support status and assess a replacement or another supported operating system rather than treating an undocumented code as a permanent Windows 10 feature.
What to record if you need help
- The exact code and all surrounding text.
- Whether the screen was Windows Update, installation, a crash, startup recovery, Activation, or another program.
- Whether Windows starts normally, only in Safe Mode, or not at all.
- The last hardware, driver, software, or update change.
- Any Device Manager warning text, DISM result, troubleshooter result, Startup Repair result, or BOOTREC response.
- Your Windows version and edition from
winver.
This evidence lets support choose the correct branch instead of guessing what the undocumented hexadecimal value means.
