Error 0x0097A438 has no confirmed, code-specific meaning in the authoritative Windows documentation available. It may be an application-specific value, a parameter attached to another error, or a transcription mistake. Treating it automatically as a malware, registry, printer, or driver problem would be guesswork.
The reliable fix is to identify where the value appears, capture the complete message and surrounding diagnostic data, then follow the repair path for that component. The steps below cover Device Manager, stop errors, Event Viewer, Windows Update, third-party applications, drivers, firmware, memory, and Windows recovery.

What error 0x0097A438 means
Microsoft’s Device Manager documentation explicitly warns that its reference does not contain every code. The hexadecimal value 0x0097A438 is not identified there, and no authoritative vendor page in the available documentation assigns it a specific cause. Microsoft’s wording is: “This article doesn’t contain all error codes generated by Device Manager.”

That leaves three realistic possibilities:
- The number belongs to a particular application or hardware vendor rather than to Windows itself.
- It is a parameter included with a different error or stop code.
- The value was copied incorrectly from a message, log, screenshot, or OCR result.
Therefore, the number alone cannot tell you whether the problem is a driver, hardware, Windows component, application, or security issue. The screen and the complete text around it determine the next diagnostic tool.

First identify where the code appears
Device Manager
If the value is shown in Device Manager, press Win + X, select Device Manager, expand the relevant category, double-click the device, and read the Device status box on the General tab. Record the device name, manufacturer, status text, and any separate numeric code. An unlisted Device Manager value should be taken to the device manufacturer or Microsoft Support rather than matched to an unrelated code found online.
A blue-screen or stop error
If the value appeared during a crash, photograph or copy the entire stop screen. Record the stop code, any named driver or module, the percentage progress, and whether Windows restarted successfully. A hexadecimal value can be a parameter accompanying the real stop code, so troubleshooting only 0x0097A438 may miss the actual failure.
Microsoft describes a stop error this way: “When Windows encounters a condition that compromises safe system operation, the system stops.” Its general guidance is to install current Windows, cumulative, and optional driver updates; check BIOS and firmware; run appropriate hardware and memory tests; maintain adequate free disk space; and contact the vendor when a driver or application is implicated.

Event Viewer, Windows Update, or an application
For an Event Viewer entry, open Event Viewer from Start, go to Windows Logs, choose System or Application, and inspect entries at the exact failure time. Save the event source, Event ID, level, General text, and Details view. If Windows Update or a third-party program displayed the value, record the update name or application version and check that product’s own log. The originating component is more useful than the hexadecimal number by itself.

Capture evidence before changing anything
Write down the following while the message is still visible:
- The complete error sentence, including punctuation, additional numbers, and any file or driver name.
- Where it appeared: Device Manager, Event Viewer, Windows Update, a blue screen, or a particular application.
- Your Windows edition, version, and build number. Press Win + R, enter
winver, and copy the result. - The device model and, if relevant, the driver version shown in the device’s properties.
- Whether the failure is repeatable, occurs only at startup, or follows sleep, gaming, printing, networking, or another activity.
- Recent changes: Windows or driver updates, BIOS or firmware work, newly connected hardware, antivirus changes, newly installed applications, or system-cleanup utilities.
- Any Event Viewer entries, crash-dump references, screenshots, and the approximate time of each occurrence.
Do not delete logs or uninstall software before recording this information. A timeline often reveals that the code started immediately after a specific change.
Manual fixes, in the safest order
1. Install Windows updates
- Open Settings and select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates and install available quality or cumulative updates.
- Open Advanced options, then Optional updates. If a driver update is offered and it matches the affected hardware, note its version before installing.
- Restart even if Windows does not immediately request it, then test the action that previously produced the code.
Windows Update is Microsoft’s recommended first source for a suitable driver. If no update is offered or the problem remains, use the computer or device manufacturer’s support page and select the exact model and Windows edition. Avoid drivers intended for a different revision of the device.
2. Check and, when appropriate, roll back the driver
In Device Manager, open the affected device’s Properties and inspect the Driver tab. Compare the provider, date, and version with the manufacturer’s current release. If the problem began immediately after a driver update and Roll Back Driver is available, use that reversible option, restart, and test again. If rollback is unavailable, do not force an arbitrary replacement; preserve the driver details and obtain the manufacturer’s package.

Uninstalling a driver can leave a device unavailable until Windows reinstalls a compatible package. Use removal only when the manufacturer or Microsoft’s troubleshooting instructions call for it, and keep the correct driver package available first.
3. Check BIOS and firmware after a recent hardware change
A stop error or device failure that began after a BIOS, firmware, or hardware change warrants a model-specific check on the system or component manufacturer’s support site. Verify the exact model and revision, read the release notes, connect reliable power, and follow the vendor’s recovery instructions. Never apply firmware intended for another model. If the code started after a firmware update, the vendor’s rollback or recovery procedure is safer than repeatedly flashing different files.
4. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic when symptoms point to memory
Unexplained restarts, blue screens during different workloads, corrupted files, or failures that move between applications can justify a memory test. Press Win + R, enter mdsched.exe, choose Restart now and check for problems or schedule the test for the next reboot, and allow the test to complete. After Windows starts, open Event Viewer and review the MemoryDiagnostics-Results source for the result. A reported memory problem should be investigated with the computer manufacturer or a qualified technician; do not assume the unidentified code itself proves a faulty module.
5. Check storage space and relevant hardware
Microsoft’s stop-error guidance includes maintaining adequate free disk space because updates, diagnostics, and crash data need working room. In Settings > System > Storage, check the system drive and remove only files you recognize as unnecessary. If the failure affects a particular device, use the manufacturer’s approved diagnostic tool for that device. Record test results rather than replacing hardware solely because the hexadecimal value looks unfamiliar.

6. Undo a change that immediately preceded the problem
Use the least destructive reversal that matches the timeline:
- For a recent Windows update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates and remove only the update associated with the onset, when Windows allows it.
- For a recent device-driver update, use the device’s Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver option if present.
- For a newly installed application or service, uninstall that specific item through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, then restart and test.
- For a recent system-level change, use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists. From Windows recovery, Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore may be available.
- If Windows cannot start normally after the change, use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair from the Windows Recovery Environment.
Recovery options can remove applications, drivers, or settings installed after the selected restore point. Read the affected-item list before confirming and back up accessible personal files first.
7. Reproduce the failure with minimal variables
After each change, restart and perform the same action that triggered the code. If the error disappears, stop changing unrelated components and document what fixed it. If it returns only with one peripheral, application, or workload, disconnect or disable that item temporarily and test with the latest supported driver or application version. A repeatable trigger is valuable evidence for the vendor even when no code-specific explanation exists.
How to interpret driver and hardware likelihood
Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting guidance gives a broad analysis of crash root causes: 70% attributed to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware issues, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% to unknown causes. Those percentages describe Microsoft’s general crash analysis, not measurements of error 0x0097A438. They cannot establish that this particular value is a driver or hardware error.

When the code is not enough to diagnose
Escalate instead of guessing when the value persists, Windows cannot start reliably, data is being corrupted, or the message names a device or application that you cannot identify. Send Microsoft Support or the relevant vendor:
- The exact message and a screenshot.
- Windows edition, build, and update history.
- Computer or device model, affected component, and driver or firmware versions.
- Event Viewer details, dump-file references, and memory or hardware test results.
- A timeline showing when the issue began and which changes came immediately before it.
- Whether the issue is reproducible and the exact steps that trigger it.
Support can then determine whether 0x0097A438 is a vendor-defined value, a parameter attached to another error, or a transcription problem. Do not substitute a generic registry cleaner, an unofficial DLL download, or a replacement device for that identification.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, a Windows 10 computer may still run, but you should verify its edition, update state, and available support options before treating a persistent system error as an ordinary current-version issue. If the machine is eligible for a supported Windows release, review compatibility and backup requirements before upgrading; an upgrade is not a code-specific cure.
Is it safe to keep using the computer?
The hexadecimal value alone is not evidence of malware or imminent hardware failure. Continued use is a judgment based on symptoms: an isolated application message with no instability is different from repeated blue screens, shutdowns, data corruption, overheating, or an inaccessible device. Back up important files before extensive troubleshooting, and stop using the system for sensitive work if crashes are frequent until diagnostics identify the cause.
