Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Error 0x009765B2 does not have a Microsoft-documented, single cause or component. The safest fix is to identify when it appears, complete Windows’ basic update and storage checks, repair the component store and system files with DISM and SFC, and then isolate an application, driver, update, or damaged Windows installation. The code alone does not prove that your PC has malware, a registry fault, or failing hardware.
What error 0x009765B2 means
0x009765B2 is a hexadecimal Windows error value. Microsoft documentation reviewed for Windows 10 and Windows 11 does not identify a specific Windows component or application that emits this exact code. That means two computers can display the same value for different underlying problems, and a code-specific “one-click” cure cannot be established from the number alone.

Use the message and its timing as the diagnostic clue. A code shown during Windows Update points you toward update services, connectivity, storage, or damaged system files. A code shown only when one program opens points toward that program or one of its dependencies. A code that began immediately after a device or driver change calls for a hardware-driver investigation. A message during startup or shutdown raises the possibility of broader Windows corruption and makes recovery options more relevant.

Is it a virus?
Not based on the code alone. The available Microsoft material does not classify 0x009765B2 as malware, a virus, a registry defect, or a hardware failure. Do not delete system files or make registry changes simply because a web page labels the number as an infection. If your security software separately reports a threat, follow that product’s removal procedure; that is a different issue from interpreting this error value.

Record the trigger before changing anything
Write down the exact wording, the application or Windows screen that displayed it, and the approximate time. Also record what happened immediately beforehand. This prevents a repair step from destroying the clues needed to find the real cause.
- Sign-in or startup: note whether Windows reaches the desktop, loops, freezes, or displays the code before sign-in.
- Windows Update: record the update name or percentage at which the message appears.
- One application: identify the program version and whether other programs launch normally.
- After a device change: note the device, its connection type, and when its driver was installed or replaced.
- Shutdown or restart: note whether the computer eventually powers off and whether the next boot is normal.
Press Windows + R, enter winver, and press Enter to record the Windows edition and build. In Settings, also note whether Windows reports pending updates. Keep this information with the error’s timestamp so you can give a precise report to Microsoft Support or an application or device vendor if escalation becomes necessary.
Complete the low-risk checks first
1. Restart normally
Choose Start > Power > Restart. A restart closes a stuck process, reloads services, and completes some pending maintenance. Do not hold the power button unless Windows is completely unresponsive; forced shutdown can make file-system problems worse.
2. Install pending Windows updates
On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install available updates. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Restart when Windows requests it, then repeat the action that produced 0x009765B2.
3. Verify the basics that an update needs
- Open a browser and confirm that the internet connection works.
- Open the date and time settings and make sure the time zone, date, and clock are correct. An incorrect clock can interfere with update and certificate checks.
- Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11, or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10, and confirm that the system drive has usable free space. Remove only files you recognize as unnecessary; do not delete Windows folders manually.
- Temporarily disconnect nonessential USB devices while testing, especially if the error began after connecting new hardware.
4. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter when updating triggers the code
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter. Apply the suggested correction, restart, and try the update again. Settings labels can differ slightly by build.
Repair Windows system components with DISM and SFC
Microsoft documents the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) for finding damaged Windows components and restoring missing or corrupted files. Run DISM first and SFC second. SFC can use the repaired component store as its source, so reversing the order can leave the repair incomplete.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- At the elevated prompt, enter this command exactly, then press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Wait until DISM finishes. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a period while Windows checks or restores components.
- When the prompt returns, run:
sfc /scannow - Allow SFC to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows after it completes and test the action that generated the code.
Keep the final messages from both commands. They are useful evidence if you need support. If DISM cannot complete, first confirm that the computer is online, has free system-drive space, and has been restarted after pending updates; then run the command again. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, record that result instead of repeatedly running it without a new change to the system.
Determine whether one application is responsible
If 0x009765B2 appears only when one program starts or performs a particular action, treat that program as the primary suspect rather than reinstalling Windows immediately.
Repair or reset the application
On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application’s three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and use Repair if it is available. Repair attempts to correct the installation without removing its data. If Repair does not help, the same screen may offer Reset; read the warning because resetting can remove the application’s local data and preferences.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the application, choose Advanced options when offered, and use Repair or Reset. Traditional desktop programs may instead provide a Repair option in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
Update or reinstall from the application’s vendor
Install the current version from the application’s legitimate support channel, then restart Windows. If the program stores important files locally, back them up before uninstalling. If only that program continues to show the error while other programs work, provide its vendor with the exact message, application version, Windows build, timestamp, and the DISM/SFC results.

Investigate a driver or device change
A driver is a plausible lead only when the error follows a device installation, driver replacement, Windows upgrade, or a change in how a peripheral behaves. The reviewed Microsoft sources do not attribute 0x009765B2 to a particular hardware maker or driver.

- Compare that information with the current support package published by the device maker for your exact Windows edition and hardware model. Install only a package intended for that model and Windows version.
- Restart and test again. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, the device’s Driver tab may offer Roll Back Driver; use it only when the option is available and the timing clearly matches.
If the device is not listed, appears with a warning icon, or stops working after the installation, document the device’s hardware ID and the exact driver package used. Give that information to the hardware maker rather than guessing at a replacement driver.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a recovery option when the problem persists
Recovery is more disruptive than file repair, so choose it according to what changed and what you must preserve. The following choices are documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
| Situation | Recovery choice | What to know before starting |
|---|---|---|
| A recent update preceded the error | Uninstall the relevant update | Use Windows recovery or Update history to remove the update that matches the timing. Restart and test before removing anything else. |
| A recent system change preceded the error and a restore point exists | System Restore | Select a restore point dated before the change and review the programs and drivers Windows says will be affected. |
| Windows still boots, but repeated repairs have not helped | Reset this PC | Windows can be reinstalled while offering a choice about keeping personal files. Read every screen because installed applications and settings may be removed. |
| Windows cannot be repaired through the installed system | Installation media | A bootable USB can be created on another working PC. Reinstalling from installation media can remove the device’s contents, so back up first and verify the selected option. |
Uninstall an update
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > View update history on Windows 10, and look for the option to uninstall updates. Remove only the update whose installation matches the start of the problem. Restart, test, and then pause further troubleshooting if the code disappears so you can identify whether that update was the trigger.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse System Restore
Search for Recovery, open Recovery, and select Open System Restore. Choose a restore point from before the error began and review the affected programs and drivers before confirming. If Windows will not start normally, System Restore may also be available from the Windows recovery environment. A restore point is not a substitute for a current backup of personal files.
Reset this PC
Back up documents, photographs, browser data, and application-specific files first. Then open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, and select Reset this PC. Follow the prompts and choose the personal-file option only after confirming which applications and settings will be removed. Keep the computer connected to power and allow the process to finish without forcing a shutdown.
Create and use Windows installation media
Use installation media when Windows will not repair itself or when Reset this PC cannot complete. Microsoft documents creating a bootable USB on another working PC through its official Windows download process. You will need a second working computer, a USB drive suitable for the media-creation process, and a backup of files from the affected PC.
- On the working PC, use Microsoft’s official Windows download process to create bootable installation media for the Windows edition you intend to reinstall.
- Back up important files from the affected computer. If Windows still starts, copy them to external storage or another trusted location before changing partitions or reinstalling.
- Connect the bootable USB to the affected PC and start it from that device using the computer’s boot-device selection procedure.
- Follow the Windows Setup screens carefully. Confirm the edition and installation target, and stop if a screen indicates that existing partitions or device contents will be removed unexpectedly.
- After installation, run Windows Update, install the hardware maker’s current drivers, restore your files, and reinstall applications from their legitimate sources.
Installation media is the most disruptive option in this sequence. Microsoft warns that reinstalling from installation media can remove device contents. Do not proceed until you understand whether the selected path preserves personal files and whether you have the credentials and installers needed afterward.
If Windows does not boot normally
When the code appears before the desktop, disconnect nonessential peripherals and try one normal restart. If Windows repeatedly fails to start, use the recovery choices offered by the Windows recovery environment. System Restore and update removal are the least destructive options when the problem began after a recent change. Reset this PC or installation media should be reserved for cases where those options and DISM/SFC cannot return the system to a usable state.
Do not repeatedly interrupt a repair, update, or reset by holding the power button. If the computer cannot reach recovery options, create installation media on another working PC and use it to access Windows recovery or reinstall Windows after backing up what you can.
When to escalate and what to send
Contact Microsoft Support for a Windows-level failure, or the application’s or device maker’s support team when the error is limited to that product. Include:
- The exact code and full message, copied rather than retyped when possible.
- The trigger: sign-in, update, one application, device change, shutdown, or another action.
- Windows edition and build from
winver. - The date and time, recent updates or driver changes, and whether the issue is reproducible.
- Relevant Event Viewer details. Open Start, search for Event Viewer, and review Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application around the timestamp. Copy the event source, event ID, and general message; do not delete logs while investigating.
- The final DISM and SFC messages, plus the result of the Windows Update troubleshooter if updating triggered the code.
This evidence lets support distinguish a Windows servicing problem from an application or device failure without assuming that the hexadecimal value identifies the cause.
