Error 0x0097371E has no confirmed match in Microsoft’s published Windows error documentation. It may be mistyped, incomplete, or generated by a particular installer or application. Before choosing a code-specific repair, record the complete message and identify whether it appeared during Windows Update, setup, activation, startup, or inside another program. Then follow the troubleshooting branch that matches the symptom.

What error 0x0097371E means

Microsoft’s documented error tables do not identify 0x0097371E. A separate exact search for both 0x0097371E and 0x8007371E also produced no authoritative match. That means the hexadecimal text alone cannot establish a cause or guarantee that a particular command will fix it.

Codes that look similar are not interchangeable. For example, Microsoft documents 0x80073701 as ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING and 0x8007371B as ERROR_SXS_TRANSACTION_CLOSURE_INCOMPLETE. Those documented errors can involve the Windows component store, but their existence does not prove that 0x0097371E is the same condition.

Treat the visible code as a clue until you have captured the surrounding text. The app, installer, update number, or event-log entry often supplies the information needed to select the correct repair.

Confirm the complete message before changing Windows

  1. Copy every character. Check the leading 0x, every digit, capitalization, punctuation, and any second code shown in the same dialog.
  2. Write down the source. Note whether the message came from Windows Update, a feature or quality update, Windows Setup, activation, boot, a game, a driver installer, or another application.
  3. Record what happened immediately before it. Include a newly installed driver, device, application, update, disk cleanup, or forced shutdown.
  4. Check Event Viewer when Windows is running. Press Win, type Event Viewer, open it, and inspect Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application at the time of the error. Save the event’s source, event ID, and full text.
  5. Search the full message, not just the hexadecimal string. A phrase such as an installer name, package name, or stop code is more useful than an unverified code fragment.

Do not delete system folders or edit the registry merely because a web page associates a similar-looking number with them. The exact code remains unresolved until the complete context identifies a supported Windows error or an application-specific problem.

Choose the repair branch that matches the symptom

What you see Start here Data impact Privilege
Update download or installation fails Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, then check for updates Reversible; does not remove personal files Settings app; administrator approval may be requested
Messages mention damaged Windows components or servicing DISM /RestoreHealth, followed by SFC Reversible system repair Elevated Command Prompt
Blue/black screen, crash, or restart loop Remove new hardware, Safe Mode, Device Manager, free-space and update checks Usually reversible; uninstalling a device or driver changes configuration Safe Mode or administrator account may be needed
Windows will not start or in-place repair fails System Restore or official recovery/installation media Restore can roll back system state; reset or clean installation can remove apps and files Recovery environment and a second working computer may be needed

This comparison is important because a repair that is reasonable for one branch can be counterproductive in another. Running component-repair commands will not fix a defective USB device, while resetting Windows is excessive for a troubleshooter-detectable update configuration issue. Start with the least destructive step that fits the observed symptom, and move to the next branch only when the result or the error context justifies it.

Fix update-related occurrences first

When the dialog appears while downloading or installing a Windows update, Microsoft identifies the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter as the safest first-line action. Microsoft states, “If you get an error code while downloading and installing Windows updates, the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve the problem.” It is designed for update error codes and can correct common update configuration problems without immediately changing personal data.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Apply any recommended correction and restart the computer, even if the troubleshooter does not request an immediate restart.
  5. Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Select Windows Update, then Run the troubleshooter.
  4. Apply the suggested action and restart.
  5. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates again.

If the same dialog returns, capture the full message and the update’s knowledge-base number before trying more invasive repairs. A failure tied to one application’s installer is not necessarily a Windows Update failure, even if it occurs soon after an update. Note whether the failure occurs during download, restart, installation percentage, or the first boot afterward; that timing helps separate update servicing from a driver or application problem.

Repair the Windows component store with DISM and SFC

Use this branch when the surrounding message refers to failed servicing, missing assemblies, or damaged Windows components. Microsoft documents the following sequence for nearby component-store errors, including 0x80073701 and 0x8007371B; it does not map the unresolved 0x0097371E string to this sequence.

Run the commands in an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Enter this command exactly, then press Enter:
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth

DISM checks and repairs the running Windows image. The process can pause for a long time at one percentage; do not close the window solely because progress appears slow. Wait for a completion message or an explicit error.

  1. After DISM finishes, run:
Sfc.exe /Scannow
  1. Wait until System File Checker reaches 100 percent, read its result, and restart Windows.
  2. Retry the update or installation that originally produced the message.

DISM should be run before SFC in this sequence because SFC uses the Windows component store as its source for replacing protected files. If DISM completes successfully but SFC reports that it found and repaired files, restart and test the original operation. If SFC says it found no integrity violations, the unidentified code may be coming from an application, driver, or update workflow rather than damaged protected files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair files, keep the exact output. A new error code, the component name, or an indication that source files are unavailable is more actionable than repeating the same commands indefinitely. Do not interrupt either operation by powering off the computer. The commands require an elevated window; a standard Command Prompt may return an access or permission error without changing anything.

Use the crash and restart-loop branch

If 0x0097371E appears with a blue or black screen, an unexpected restart, or a stop code, treat the event as a stability problem rather than an ordinary update dialog. Microsoft’s recovery guidance emphasizes hardware, drivers, storage space, updates, Safe Mode, and System Restore.

Remove recently added hardware

Shut down, disconnect a newly added USB device, expansion card, dock, printer, or other hardware, and start Windows again. If the machine stabilizes, reconnect devices one at a time so the trigger can be identified. Do not open a laptop or desktop power supply unless you are qualified to work safely with it.

Start in Safe Mode

From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select a Safe Mode option. Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers, which helps distinguish a third-party driver or startup program from a core Windows failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows cannot reach the sign-in screen, interrupt startup two or three times by holding the power button after Windows begins loading. Windows should enter the recovery environment, where the same Troubleshoot > Advanced options path is available. Use forced shutdown only to reach recovery; repeated abrupt power loss can damage unsaved data.

Check Device Manager

  1. Press Win+X and open Device Manager.
  2. Look for a yellow warning icon or a device that appeared immediately before the crashes.
  3. Right-click the device and inspect Properties for a status message and device-specific error code.
  4. Use Update driver when a current driver is available, or choose Disable device temporarily to test whether stability returns.
  5. If the problem began after a driver change, open Properties > Driver and use Roll Back Driver when that option is available. Otherwise, uninstall the problematic device and restart so Windows can redetect it.

Prefer drivers supplied by the device or computer manufacturer and match the exact Windows edition and hardware model. A driver fix is appropriate only when the symptom points to a device; it is not a general answer to an unidentified hexadecimal code.

Check free space and pending updates

Ensure the Windows system drive has adequate free space for temporary update and recovery files. Remove only files you recognize, empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate, and restart before retrying the operation. Then install available Windows updates that apply to your edition. Lack of space or a pending restart can make an update appear to fail for an unrelated reason.

Try System Restore when the failure persists

Open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore, or reach Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore from the recovery environment. Select a restore point dated before the crashes or driver change. System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings; it is not a substitute for backing up personal documents, and it does not remove every type of application or hardware problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Escalate to recovery or installation media only when necessary

A bootable USB drive is an escalation tool for a computer that will not start or cannot be repaired in place. It is not evidence that the unidentified 0x0097371E code has a particular cause.

Protect personal files first

  • Back up documents, photos, browser data, encryption recovery keys, and other irreplaceable files to storage that is separate from the affected Windows installation.
  • If Windows still starts, copy files before selecting reset or reinstall options.
  • Confirm that you know the account credentials and any application license or activation requirements needed after recovery.

Use Microsoft’s official recovery workflow

Windows recovery options include Startup Repair, System Restore, uninstalling a recent update, and other advanced paths. Choose the least destructive option that matches the symptom. If those options fail, use Microsoft’s official Windows download and installation-media workflow to create or use installation media. A USB flash drive is a practical physical medium for that process, but the media can also be used to access repair tools without immediately performing a clean installation.

Read every screen carefully before selecting Reset this PC or a clean installation. Depending on the option, applications, settings, and personal files can be removed. A clean installation should be the final step after backup and after confirming that the hardware itself is not failing. If you need to create media on another computer, use Microsoft’s official download process and label the USB clearly so it is not mistaken for an ordinary storage drive.

Windows 10 support status matters

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The troubleshooting steps above may still help an existing installation, but a continuing repair problem should also prompt migration planning to a supported Windows release when the computer meets its requirements. Do not assume that a successful one-time repair restores ongoing security support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Windows 10 system that cannot meet the requirements of a supported release, weigh the cost and risk of continued use, hardware replacement, or an organizational migration plan. Keep recovery media and backups current, because the absence of ongoing security fixes increases the consequences of a later failure.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming similar digits mean the same error. 0x0097371E, 0x8007371E, and documented servicing codes such as 0x8007371B are different strings.
  • Running commands in a non-elevated window. DISM and SFC need an administrator Command Prompt for the documented repair sequence.
  • Repeating DISM and SFC without reading results. Save the exact completion or failure text and use it to choose the next branch.
  • Using a driver fix for an application-only failure. Update, disable, or roll back a device only when Device Manager or the crash timing implicates that device.
  • Resetting before backing up. Recovery and clean-install choices can remove applications or files.
  • Treating a USB installer as a diagnosis. Installation media provides recovery tools; it does not identify the source of an unconfirmed code.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings adjustments, temporary and cache cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder, and crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial by category lasts at least two days before a paid subscription, results vary, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus software.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 0x0097371E the same as 0x8007371B?

No. They are different hexadecimal strings. Microsoft documents 0x8007371B as ERROR_SXS_TRANSACTION_CLOSURE_INCOMPLETE, while 0x0097371E has no confirmed match in Microsoft’s published tables. Do not apply a code-specific fix until the complete message is verified.

Can DISM and SFC fix error 0x0097371E?

They can repair Windows component or protected-file damage when the surrounding symptoms indicate servicing corruption. Microsoft documents the DISM RestoreHealth followed by SFC /Scannow sequence for nearby errors such as 0x80073701 and 0x8007371B, not specifically for 0x0097371E.

What should I do if the code appears during Windows Update?

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter for your Windows version, restart, and select Check for updates again. If it returns, record the complete dialog and update knowledge-base number. An application installer that fails outside Windows Update needs a different branch.

Do I need a bootable USB to repair this error?

Usually not. Start with the troubleshooter or the appropriate in-Windows repair. Use official installation media when Windows will not start or recovery tools cannot repair it in place. Back up personal files before reset or clean installation.

Why does the code appear after a driver installation or crash?

The hexadecimal text alone does not prove a driver cause. Remove newly added hardware, try Safe Mode, and inspect Device Manager for warning icons or a device changed immediately before the crashes. Update, disable, roll back, or uninstall only the implicated device.

Will System Restore delete my personal files?

System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings to a selected restore point. It is not a substitute for a backup, and you should still copy important files before recovery. Reset and clean installation have greater potential to remove applications and personal files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Windows 10 still supported for this repair?

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Existing troubleshooting steps may work, but Microsoft no longer provides free updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Plan migration to a supported Windows release when the hardware qualifies.

Where can I find more useful details than the hexadecimal code?

Record the full dialog, the program or installer name, what happened immediately before it, and any second code. In Event Viewer, inspect Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application around the error time and save the event source, ID, and full text.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: 0x0097371E is not confirmed in Microsoft’s published error tables, so verify the complete message before treating it as a specific Windows condition. Use the Windows Update troubleshooter for update failures; use elevated DISM followed by SFC when the message points to component corruption; use Safe Mode, Device Manager, free-space checks, updates, and System Restore for crashes; and reserve recovery media, reset, or reinstall for systems that cannot be repaired in place. Back up personal files before destructive recovery steps, and remember that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
