The hexadecimal text by itself cannot tell you whether the cause is a driver, damaged system files, activation, Windows Setup, an individual application, or something else. The correct fix depends on where the code appeared and what happened immediately before it. Capture that context first, then follow the matching Windows procedure below.
First, identify where 0x0096A218 appeared
Do not treat this code as a diagnosis. Write down the complete message around it, the name of the application or installer, the action that triggered it, and whether Windows crashed or restarted. Take a screenshot if possible. Also record your Windows edition and build by pressing Windows+R, typing winver, and pressing Enter.

If the code appeared only in a third-party program, that program’s vendor may have assigned the number. Microsoft does not document 0x0096A218 as a standard Windows stop, update or activation code in the sources reviewed, so do not infer a specific fault from the digits.

If 0x0096A218 appeared on a blue screen or after a restart
Microsoft’s general blue-screen guidance is that a hardware device, its driver or software might have caused the failure. A single unexpected restart can be transient; repeated crashes require evidence and a controlled troubleshooting sequence.

1. Remove recent changes
- Shut down the computer.
- Disconnect newly installed, nonessential hardware such as a USB device, expansion card, dock or external storage. Leave the keyboard, mouse and display connected.
- If you recently installed a driver, utility or security product, note its name and installation date. Do not delete system files to try to clear the code.
- Start Windows and check whether the same action still causes the crash.
If removing a device stops the crash, reconnect it later only after obtaining a compatible driver or checking the device manufacturer’s support instructions.
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If the problem does not occur there, a startup item, optional driver or service is more likely than the basic Windows installation.
- Open Settings and go to System > Recovery in Windows 11, or Update & Security > Recovery in Windows 10.
- Under Advanced startup, choose Restart now.
- After the recovery menu appears, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking when network access is necessary.
In Safe Mode, undo the most recent driver or software change and restart normally. If Windows cannot reach the recovery menu, interrupt startup twice by holding the power button while Windows begins to load; on the next start, Windows should enter the recovery environment.

3. Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand categories for hardware changed shortly before the crash. A yellow warning icon identifies a device that Windows has flagged.
- Right-click the suspect device and choose Properties. Read the status on the General tab and note the driver provider and date on the Driver tab.
- Use Update driver to let Windows search, or install a driver obtained from the hardware maker. If the failure began immediately after an update, Roll Back Driver may be available.
- If the device is not needed, choose Disable device for a test. Uninstalling a device removes its driver package and should be reserved for a clearly identified, replaceable device; restart afterward.
Do not install a random driver because its version number looks newer. Match the driver to your exact computer or device model and Windows edition.
4. Check free space and install Windows updates
Windows needs working space for paging, temporary files and update operations. In Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10), check the system drive and remove only files you recognize. Then open Settings > Windows Update (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update (Windows 10), select Check for updates, install available updates and restart.
5. Use System Restore when the timing is clear
- Search for Create a restore point and open the result.
- Select System Restore, choose a restore point dated before the first crash and review the affected programs.
- Complete the wizard and let Windows restart. Personal documents are not erased, but applications and drivers installed after the selected point may be removed.
System Restore is available only if a suitable restore point exists and system protection was enabled.

When the crash repeats: collect evidence
Review the System log
- Right-click Start and open Event Viewer.
- Choose Windows Logs > System.
- Use Filter Current Log or sort by date, then inspect critical and error events in the minutes before the restart.
- Open an event and record the Source, Event ID, general message and timestamp. Use Copy > Copy Details as Text if you need to send it to support.
An event that occurs at the same time as the crash is a clue, not proof of causation. The hexadecimal code alone is not enough to identify the failing component.
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
- Save your work, press Windows+R, type
mdsched.exeand press Enter. - Choose Restart now and check for problems. Windows will reboot and run the test before the desktop loads.
- After Windows starts, open Event Viewer and go to Windows Logs > System. Use Find for
MemoryDiagnostics-Resultsto read the result.
A reported memory problem warrants shutting down and checking the computer manufacturer’s hardware instructions or a qualified repair service. Do not assume a clean test proves that every hardware component is healthy.
If the code appeared during Windows Update, upgrade or installation
Treat an installation failure separately from a blue-screen failure. A setup screen, update history entry and installer log may use different error identifiers even when they occur during the same upgrade attempt.

Prepare the installation
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external drives, docks, printers and other peripherals. Keep the keyboard, mouse and network connection needed for the installation.
- Back up important files before attempting another upgrade.
- Confirm that the account has administrator rights. In Settings > Accounts > Your info, check the account type, or ask the computer’s administrator to run the upgrade.
- Check available space in Settings > System > Storage. Remove or move files only after confirming they are not needed.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update and select Run.
- In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update and choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any recommended action, restart and try the update once more.
If Setup displays a separate error number, use that number with Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation error table. The separate number is more useful than 0x0096A218 unless the same application explicitly documents the latter.
Note the Windows 10 support date
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 installation can still run after that date, but ordinary support and security-update availability are no longer the same as for a supported Windows release. When an upgrade is failing, confirm that the target edition and hardware meet the requirements for the Windows version you are attempting to install.

Verify edition and build
- Press Windows+R, enter
winver, and record the version and build. - Open Settings > System > Activation in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Activation in Windows 10.
- Check whether the installed edition, such as Home or Pro, matches the license associated with the computer.
Run Activation Troubleshooter
- Stay on the Activation page and select Troubleshoot when it is available.
- Follow the prompts, including signing in with the Microsoft account that holds a digital license if requested.
- Restart and recheck the Activation page.
If 0x0096A218 is not listed or explained by the activation screen, contact Microsoft Support with the complete message, edition, build and license history. Do not enter a product key from an unverified source.
If an individual application displays the code
An app dialog is the strongest indication that the application—not Windows itself—assigned the number. Record the app’s exact name and version, the file or feature being used, and whether the error appears for every Windows account.
Use the app’s own repair options
- Restart Windows and reproduce the error once, noting the exact action that triggers it.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the application, choose Advanced options when offered, and try Repair. Use Reset only after checking the app’s documentation because it can remove local settings or sign-in data.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart, then reinstall it from the developer’s official source. Preserve project files and export settings first.
Check the application’s help center or contact its vendor with the screenshot and version. A vendor can map a private application code that Microsoft does not publish.
What not to do
- Do not assign a meaning such as “virus,” “bad memory” or “driver failure” to 0x0096A218 without screen context and supporting evidence.
- Do not delete DLLs, drivers or other system files to make the message disappear.
- Do not edit the registry based only on a hexadecimal code.
- Do not purchase a repair utility solely because this undocumented code appeared.
- Do not keep retrying an upgrade without disconnecting nonessential peripherals and recording the separate Setup error, if one is shown.
When to escalate and what to send
Escalate when the code recurs after the relevant procedure, Windows cannot start normally, the memory test reports an error, or an activation or installation attempt remains blocked. Send one concise evidence package:
- A screenshot showing the complete message, not just the hexadecimal string.
- The exact action that triggered it and the date and time.
- Application, installer or device name and version.
- Windows edition, version and build from
winver. - Recent hardware, driver, software or update changes.
- Relevant Event Viewer source, event ID and timestamp.
- Any crash dump or Windows Setup log requested by Microsoft Support or the software vendor.
This information lets support distinguish a blue-screen event from an application-specific or setup-specific error. Because no published source currently defines 0x0096A218 as a standalone Windows code, the surrounding evidence is essential.
