There is no confirmed Windows definition or safe, code-specific fix for 0x00961E0B yet. The exact hexadecimal string has not been matched to an authoritative error record, so do not treat it as a printer, update, or malware error without checking the original dialog. Capture the complete message and context first. If the code is actually 0x00000961, a separate, nearby printer error, use the Print Spooler and printer-driver procedure below. If it appeared during Windows Update or while installing a desktop application, follow the corresponding Microsoft-supported route instead.
Why the exact code must be verified
Error codes are character-sensitive. A missing zero, an extra letter, or a different number of digits can identify an entirely different Windows component. No authoritative Windows 10 or Windows 11 error listing identifies 0x00961E0B as a documented code. That means a web page that confidently assigns it a single cause is likely guessing or silently substituting another code.

The closest documented match is 0x00000961, which is not the same string. That code concerns a printer Print Spooler or printer-driver DLL entry-point failure. An explanation from Error Code Reference, updated in 2026, describes it as: “This is a DLL version mismatch problem.” A stricter Print Spooler loading rule can expose an older driver that calls a function no longer available in a system DLL. This interpretation applies only when the dialog really shows 0x00000961 and the symptoms involve printing.

Record the evidence before changing Windows
Keep the original dialog open or take a screenshot. Then write down the following information exactly as displayed:
- The complete code: include every digit, letter, and leading zero. Distinguish the number zero from the letter O.
- The full wording: copy the title bar, message text, and any file name, DLL name, function name, or status text.
- Where it appeared: identify the application, printer queue, Windows Update page, installer, game, or device utility that showed it.
- What action triggered it: note whether it occurred while printing, checking for updates, installing or removing software, launching an application, signing in, or connecting hardware.
- When it began: record whether the first occurrence followed a Windows update, a driver installation, an application update, or a newly connected device.
- Its scope: test whether the failure affects one document, one printer, one application, every application, or the entire computer.
- Your Windows edition: open Settings > System > About on Windows 11, or Settings > System > About on Windows 10, and note the edition and OS build.
Do not delete the dialog or reboot repeatedly before recording this information. If you later contact the application or printer manufacturer, the screenshot and trigger sequence are usually more useful than the hexadecimal code alone.
Choose the repair route from the symptom
| What you see | Route to use | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| The message appears while printing, a queue is stuck, or a printer installation fails. | First verify whether the code is 0x00000961; if it is, restart Print Spooler and refresh the printer driver. |
It does not prove that 0x00961E0B is a printer code. |
| The message appears on the Windows Update page or during an update download or installation. | Use the Windows Update troubleshooter, check connectivity and administrator access, disconnect unnecessary hardware, restart the relevant service, and clear the update cache if files are corrupt. | These are general Windows Update procedures, not a confirmed repair for the unverified code. |
| A desktop program cannot be installed, removed, or updated. | Restart, use the program’s Repair or Reset option when available, reinstall it, or run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. | The code has not been shown to represent an app-installation problem. |
| The error appears in another application or device utility. | Use that product’s complete message and support documentation; do not substitute the neighboring printer code. | There is no evidence that the printer, update, or app procedures will address an unrelated component. |
If the dialog actually says 0x00000961 and printing is affected
Proceed with this section only after checking the screenshot or dialog. The documented interpretation is a Print Spooler or printer-driver DLL entry-point mismatch. The practical sequence is deliberately conservative: restart the service, inspect the failure if it returns, then replace the incompatible driver package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors1. Restart Print Spooler from Services
- Press Win+R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services list, locate Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, choose Start.
- Close Services, send a small test document to the affected queue, and note whether the queue completes, pauses, or produces the same message.
A restart clears a service state; it does not replace a mismatched DLL or driver. If the service stops again immediately, continue to the log review rather than repeatedly restarting it.
2. Inspect Event Viewer when the service will not stay running
- Press Win+R, enter
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Review Windows Logs > System around the exact time of the failure. Check Windows Logs > Application as well if the printer software reports an application error.
- Open the event whose timestamp matches the failure and record the DLL name, function or entry point, service name, and any referenced driver file.
- Use that file and function name when checking the printer manufacturer’s support page. Do not download a replacement DLL from an unrelated file-sharing site.
The DLL or function named in the event helps distinguish a driver package problem from a service problem. If no event identifies the failure, preserve the event details you do have before removing software.
3. Install a compatible printer driver
- Identify the exact printer manufacturer and model from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Obtain the current Windows 10 or Windows 11 driver package from that manufacturer’s official support channel. Select the package for the printer model and the computer’s Windows architecture when the site offers a choice.
- If the existing package is identified as incompatible, remove the affected printer and its driver using the manufacturer’s documented uninstall option or Windows’ printer-removal controls, then restart the computer.
- Install the compatible package, add the printer again, and print a test page.
Driver labels and removal screens differ by manufacturer. Do not remove every printer driver merely because one queue fails; first establish whether the error follows one model or all queues.
4. Retest the scope
Print a Windows test page and a document from the application that originally failed. If another printer works but one queue does not, the problem is likely confined to that queue or its package. If every queue fails and Print Spooler events name the same DLL, preserve those events for the printer manufacturer or Windows support. If the dialog’s code is not exactly 0x00000961, stop using this printer branch and return to the identification step.
If it appeared during Windows Update
Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance is relevant when the error is displayed by the update workflow. It does not identify 0x00961E0B as an update code, so use these steps because of the symptom, not because of the number.
1. Run the built-in troubleshooter
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply the proposed repair, restart when requested, and check for updates again.
2. Remove common update blockers
- Confirm that the internet connection is stable. If possible, retry on a reliable connection rather than an intermittently disconnected network.
- Use an administrator account or provide administrator credentials when Windows requests them.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB storage, docks, printers, and other external hardware during the update attempt. Leave only the hardware needed to operate the computer.
- Restart Windows before trying again. A pending restart can leave update services and files in an incomplete state.
- Check the computer manufacturer’s support information for driver updates, especially if the failure began immediately after a hardware or Windows update.
3. Clear a potentially corrupt SoftwareDistribution cache
Microsoft notes that corrupt update files can require clearing the C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution cache. This operation affects downloaded update data, not personal documents.

Close the program and its installer, restart Windows, and try the same action again. A restart can release a file or service left open by the previous attempt. If the error returns, continue rather than repeating the same cycle.
2. Use Repair or Reset when Windows provides it
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find the affected program, open its menu, and choose Advanced options when that link is present.
- Select Repair first. This attempts to correct the installation without removing the program’s data.
- If Repair does not help and the application documents what Reset removes, use Reset. Reset can erase application settings or local data, so back up anything the program stores locally before selecting it.
3. Uninstall and reinstall
If Repair and Reset are unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the program from its Installed apps entry, restart Windows, and install a current package from the software publisher. Keep the installer and any license or configuration backup. If uninstalling itself fails, use the next step rather than deleting program folders or registry entries manually.
4. Run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter
Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is intended for programs that cannot be installed, removed, or updated. Microsoft says it can repair corrupted registry keys and incomplete installation or uninstallation data. Follow its prompts for the affected program, restart if it requests one, and then retry the installation or removal. This is a general app-repair path; it is not proof that the hexadecimal code belongs to the installer.
What to do when the problem began after an update
Timing alone does not identify the cause. An update may change a system DLL, expose an old printer driver, leave a program installation incomplete, or coincide with a separate hardware fault. Use the action that failed to classify the event:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Printing failed immediately after Windows updated: verify the code, inspect Print Spooler events, and check the printer manufacturer’s current driver.
- Windows Update itself failed: run the Windows Update troubleshooter, check the connection and administrator access, disconnect unnecessary hardware, and clear the update cache if necessary.
- An application stopped installing or updating: use its Repair or Reset option, reinstall it, or run the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter.
- A device utility reports the code: capture the utility’s full message and identify the device before changing drivers.
Keep a short timeline containing the update date, driver or application name, first failure, and any change after a restart. That timeline prevents a nearby but unrelated code from becoming the assumed diagnosis.
Changes to avoid
- Do not download a random DLL: replacing a system or printer DLL with a file from an unverified website can introduce a different version mismatch or malicious code.
- Do not edit the registry just because a web page suggests it: the exact code is unverified, and unsupported registry changes can prevent Windows or an installer from starting.
- Do not use a generic driver package as a substitute for identification: first determine the device, model, Windows version, and manufacturer-supported package.
- Do not assume that a printer fix applies to every occurrence: Print Spooler steps are justified only for the separately documented
0x00000961printer case. - Do not interpret the hexadecimal string as proof of malware: no Windows security listing identifies
0x00961E0Bas a security detection.
When to stop troubleshooting and escalate
Escalate with evidence when the error survives the route that matches its context, when Windows services repeatedly stop, or when several devices and applications fail at once. Include the screenshot, complete text, Windows edition and build, application or printer model, trigger action, update or driver date, Event Viewer details, and the result of each step. If the displayed string turns out to be a different code, search and support the exact code instead of treating it as 0x00961E0B.
Quick Recap
A concise decision checklist
- Read the original dialog and verify every character.
- Record the full message, affected program or device, trigger, timing, and scope.
- If it is printing and the code is exactly
0x00000961, restart Print Spooler, inspect Event Viewer if it fails again, and install a compatible manufacturer driver. - If it is Windows Update, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, confirm connectivity and administrator access, disconnect unnecessary hardware, restart, and clear
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributiononly after stopping Windows Update. - If it is a desktop program, try Repair or Reset, then reinstall or use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter.
- Keep the evidence and stop before random DLL downloads, registry cleaners, or unsupported driver changes.
