What error 0x0095E6B1 means
Microsoft describes system error codes as values that can occur in many parts of the operating system and require investigation in their programmatic and runtime context. Microsoft also notes that third-party services can generate their own codes. Because 0x0095E6B1 is not identified as a named Win32 message or standard stop code in the relevant Microsoft references, it should be treated as unidentified until you know where it came from.

This distinction matters. A number shown by a game launcher is investigated through that launcher’s logs and support documentation; the same number appearing during boot or on a blue screen requires Windows crash and hardware checks. Running a generic repair command without knowing the source can waste time and may not affect the component that produced the value.

Is 0x0095E6B1 a virus?
The code by itself is not evidence of malware. It is simply a hexadecimal-looking value, and legitimate software can create private error codes. A suspicious program, unexpected browser behavior, or a security alert should still be investigated on its own facts, but do not infer an infection from this number alone. Identify the process, publisher, file path, and complete message before deciding what the alert represents.
First, capture the context
Before changing drivers or uninstalling software, preserve the details that make the code diagnosable. Take a screenshot if possible and write down:
- The full text surrounding
0x0095E6B1, including any second code, file name, or module name. - Whether it appeared in a blue screen, a Windows dialog, an installer, a browser tab, a game, a security application, Device Manager, or another interface.
- The exact program or device name and its version, if shown.
- The date and time, whether the computer restarted or merely displayed a dialog, and whether data or an installation was interrupted.
- What changed immediately before the event: a Windows update, driver installation, new peripheral, application update, VPN or security setting, hardware upgrade, or power interruption.
- Whether the message returns at startup, only when one application runs, or only when a particular device is connected.
These observations separate a Windows failure from a product-specific failure. If the message disappears after closing one application and never affects other programs, begin with that application’s vendor rather than treating the value as a system-wide Windows code.
Look up the hexadecimal value with Microsoft’s tool
Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool displays the message text associated with a hexadecimal status code or another code. Its documentation describes the command-line form:

- Open a terminal in that folder. In File Explorer, you can use the address bar to open a Command Prompt or PowerShell window, or provide the full path to the executable.
- Run the command with the complete hexadecimal value, including the
0xprefix. - Read the returned message text and compare it with the application, device, and event that produced the code. A result that does not match the on-screen context is a reason to investigate the originating product rather than force a Windows interpretation.
The tool is digitally signed by Microsoft. Microsoft’s documentation records a last-updated date of July 14, 2025, and describes the utility as a point-in-time lookup; a missing result does not prove that the code is malicious or that Windows is damaged. It confirms only whether that particular code is present in the tool’s message database.
Choose the correct troubleshooting branch

Use the table as a starting point, not as proof of the cause. The same hexadecimal text can be reused by unrelated products.
Fixes for a crash or blue-screen event
1. Remove recently added hardware
If the code appeared after installing a graphics card, storage device, memory module, USB accessory, docking station, printer, or another component, shut down and remove or disconnect that hardware if it is safe to do so. Reconnect only the keyboard, mouse, display, and other essentials, then restart. Microsoft’s Windows 11 and Windows 10 stop-code guidance recommends this test because a newly added device or its driver can destabilize startup.
Do not open a powered computer or remove internal components unless you know the manufacturer’s procedure and electrical precautions. For a laptop or sealed device, use the vendor’s approved service instructions instead.

2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If the failure stops there, a recently installed driver, startup program, or service becomes more likely than a basic Windows boot component.
- From the sign-in screen or desktop, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. If Windows cannot reach those controls, interrupt startup two or three times to enter the Windows Recovery Environment.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, press the number for Enable Safe Mode, or Enable Safe Mode with Networking only when network access is necessary.
- In Safe Mode, repeat the action that normally triggers the code. If it does not recur, review recent drivers, startup items, and applications before returning to normal startup.
Safe Mode is a diagnostic state, not a permanent repair. Some applications and network features will not work there, so record what changes before restarting normally.
3. Check Device Manager
Open Start, search for Device Manager, and expand categories related to the suspected hardware. A yellow exclamation point identifies a device requiring attention.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Properties. Read the Device status message on the General tab and note any numbered code.
- On the Driver tab, record the provider, date, and version. If the problem began immediately after an update, Roll Back Driver may be available.
- Use Update driver when a current driver is available from the device or computer manufacturer. For a failing device, choose Disable device as a test, or Uninstall device only when you know Windows can reinstall it or you have the manufacturer’s package ready.
- Restart and check whether the original message returns. Re-enable a device after testing if disabling it did not change the behavior.
Microsoft advises escalating unlisted Device Manager codes to the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support. Do not assume that an unrelated driver update will resolve an unidentified application code.

Install Windows updates and verify storage
Microsoft includes current updates and adequate free disk space in its basic Windows 10 and Windows 11 stop-code workflow. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Restart when requested and check again after the restart if a pending update remains.
For storage, open Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10) and inspect the system drive. Microsoft notes that the exact free-space requirement varies by configuration; keeping roughly 10% to 15% of the drive free is a practical guideline, not a guarantee or a fixed Windows rule. Remove or move only files you have identified as safe to delete, and preserve backups before changing personal data.

If the code returns after every restart or whenever a particular action occurs, use Event Viewer to correlate the time of the failure with a driver or module.
- Press Windows key + X and select Event Viewer, or search for it from Start.
- Open Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application. Sort or filter entries around the recorded event time.
- Look for a named driver, executable, service, or faulting module. Copy the event source, event ID, faulting application, and timestamp into your notes.
- Compare that name with recently installed software or hardware and with the product’s own support documentation.
Microsoft’s advanced guidance recommends testing suspicious drivers first and warns that verifying every driver at once can reduce performance or make the computer unusable. Change one suspected driver or service at a time, create a restore point when available, and keep a record of each change so you can reverse it.
When the code came from an installer or application
A third-party installer, game, browser, VPN, antivirus, or utility may display 0x0095E6B1 as its private status value. In that case, collect the exact product name, version, Windows edition, installation path, and the time of failure. Check the product’s official release notes, logs, and support instructions for that version.
Before retrying, close the application, restart Windows, and confirm that the system drive has adequate space. If the failure began after an application update, the publisher may provide a repair, rollback, or clean-reinstallation procedure. Do not delete shared system files or registry entries merely because their names appear near the error; obtain a documented procedure from the software vendor.
If several unrelated applications fail with the same behavior, return to Windows-level checks: Safe Mode, Device Manager, updates, storage, and Event Viewer. If only one product fails, send its vendor the complete message and logs rather than reporting the hexadecimal value without context.
Use System Restore or another recovery option
When basic checks do not stop a recurring crash, Microsoft recommends moving to Windows recovery options. From Settings > System > Recovery in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery in Windows 10, open the available recovery choices. From the Windows Recovery Environment, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
System Restore can return system files, drivers, and settings to an earlier restore point without intentionally removing personal documents. It is useful when the problem began after a driver or software change, but it cannot help if no suitable restore point exists. Other recovery options may include startup repair or resetting Windows; read the warning about applications and personal files before confirming. Back up important data first, especially if the computer is unstable.
How to report the problem effectively
Support staff can act on a reproducible report. Include:
- The exact string
0x0095E6B1and every other code shown. - A screenshot or transcription of the full message.
- Windows edition (10 or 11), version, and whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit when relevant.
- The originating application or device, exact version, and vendor.
- What you were doing, the event time, and whether the system crashed, restarted, or continued running.
- Recent hardware, driver, Windows, or application changes.
- Relevant Event Viewer source, event ID, faulting module, and Device Manager status.
- Which steps changed the symptoms, including whether Safe Mode prevented recurrence.
Send this information to the named software or hardware vendor when the code appears inside that product. Contact Microsoft Support for a Windows-level failure that persists after the documented checks, especially when no third-party component or device can be identified.

What not to do
- Do not assume the hexadecimal value is a standard Windows stop code when Microsoft’s references do not identify it.
- Do not treat the code alone as proof of malware.
- Do not verify or replace every driver at once; Microsoft warns that indiscriminate driver verification can impair or disable the computer.
- Do not delete system files, registry keys, or shared DLLs without a product-specific, documented reason.
- Do not keep retrying an installer without recording its version and logs; repeated attempts can obscure the original event.
- Do not reset Windows before backing up important files and considering less destructive recovery options.
