Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchError 0x0094C249 does not have a confirmed entry in the Microsoft system-error, Device Manager, stop-code, or Windows Update references covered for Windows 10 and Windows 11. A hexadecimal value by itself is not enough to identify the fault: the same-looking number may come from a particular application, installer, device component, or service. Do not apply a generic “0x0094C249 fix” or edit the registry until you know what displayed it.
The reliable approach is to preserve the complete message, decode the value with Microsoft’s lookup utilities, then follow the branch that matches the symptom. The steps below cover one-time dialogs, repeated restarts or stop screens, Device Manager warnings, Windows Update, and errors raised by a single third-party application.

What error 0x0094C249 means on Windows
Microsoft’s published references do not assign a confirmed meaning to 0x0094C249. It is therefore not possible to say from the hexadecimal string alone that the problem is Windows Update, a driver, malware, damaged system files, or any other specific cause. Microsoft notes that system error codes can appear in many parts of Windows and require investigation, while third-party services and applications can generate their own codes.

First, preserve the complete error context
Before closing the message or changing anything, record enough information for the code to be identified later. A screenshot is useful, but copy the text as well when possible.
Capture these details
- The complete hexadecimal value, including the
0xprefix and every character. - The dialog or stop-screen title.
- The name of the application, installer, Windows component, service, or utility that displayed it.
- All surrounding text, file names, buttons, and any secondary code.
- What you were doing immediately before it appeared: starting Windows, installing an update, launching an app, printing, connecting a device, or another action.
- Whether it happened once, repeats after every restart, or occurs only when a particular device or program is used.
- Your Windows edition, version, and build number.
- Recent changes such as new hardware, a driver installation, a major update, or newly installed software.
Find the Windows edition and build
Press Win+R, type winver, and press Enter to display the Windows version and build. You can also open Settings > System > About on Windows 11, or Settings > System > About on current Windows 10 builds, and copy the values under Windows specifications. Include this information when you contact support; “Windows 10” or “Windows 11” without the build is often insufficient.
Decode the hexadecimal value before changing Windows
Microsoft provides an Error Lookup Tool that displays the message associated with a hexadecimal status code. The result may identify a standard Windows status, or it may return no matching message. A blank or unhelpful result does not prove that Windows is damaged; it can mean the value belongs to an application or component with its own error catalogue.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use Microsoft Error Lookup Tool
- Obtain the Microsoft Error Lookup Tool from Microsoft’s documentation and use the executable supplied there.
- Run it with the exact value, preserving the hexadecimal notation. Microsoft documents the command form
Err_6.4.5.exe <error code>. - Save the returned message alongside the original dialog. If the tool does not recognize
0x0094C249, keep that result as evidence rather than substituting a similar-looking code.
Try the built-in CertUtil decoder
Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt and run:
certutil -error 0x0094C249
Microsoft documents certutil -error <code> as a way to decode hexadecimal error values. Read the output literally. It may describe a known status, or it may indicate that no matching message is available.

Use err.exe when it is available
Microsoft also documents the Error tool command:
err.exe 0x0094C249
Run the command from the folder containing err.exe, or provide its full path. Keep a copy of the output for support. Do not infer a cause merely because a search result associates another hexadecimal code with a driver or update; a single changed digit can represent a different status.
Choose the troubleshooting branch that matches the symptom
The table below prevents a common mistake: applying a driver or Windows Update procedure to a code generated by an unrelated application.
| Observed symptom or location | Most useful next evidence | Initial direction |
|---|---|---|
| One dialog from a single application | Application name, version, action that triggered it, and the full text | Treat the value as that application’s code and consult its publisher after recording the message. |
| Repeated restart, blue screen, or black screen | Stop-screen text, recent hardware or software changes, and Windows build | Remove newly added hardware, try Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, install current updates, then use recovery options if needed. |
| Yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager | Device name and the exact Status text in its Properties window | Follow the device manufacturer’s driver update or reinstall procedure; do not change unrelated drivers. |
| Windows Update failure | Complete Update message, update history entry, and build | Compare the complete message with Microsoft’s documented update-code list. This exact value is not listed there. |
| Installer, printer utility, game, or other tool | Program name, installer log or dialog text, and the triggering action | Use the publisher’s support route once the full context is captured. |
Fix repeated restarts, blue screens, or black screens
If the code appears with a stop screen or the computer repeatedly restarts, prioritize access and stability over decoding every possible interpretation. Microsoft’s recovery guidance starts with recent hardware, Safe Mode, Device Manager, updates, and recovery options.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Remove recently added hardware
Shut down the computer and disconnect a device that was added immediately before the problem began, such as a USB accessory, expansion card, storage device, or docking connection. Leave essential input and display hardware connected. Start Windows again and check whether the restart or stop screen returns. If removing the device changes the symptom, identify that device and use its manufacturer’s support and driver procedure rather than changing unrelated system settings.

2. Enter Safe Mode
When Windows can still reach the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. At the recovery menu choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose a Safe Mode option. On Windows 11, the same recovery controls are available through Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and select Restart now under Advanced startup.
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If the code disappears there, compare recently installed drivers, hardware utilities, and startup software with the time the problem began. Do not assume that Safe Mode itself repairs anything; it is a diagnostic environment that helps separate a basic Windows startup from an added component.
3. Inspect Device Manager
In Safe Mode or a normal session, right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand the categories and look for a yellow exclamation mark. Open the affected device’s Properties and read the Status box, including any separate device error number. Device Manager codes are a distinct family from an unconfirmed hexadecimal dialog such as 0x0094C249.
Write down the device’s exact model and the status text. If the device was recently added, disconnect it again and test. If a driver change preceded the failure, use the device manufacturer’s documented update or reinstall process. Keep the original driver package or a restore path available before removing a working driver.

4. Install pending Windows updates after basic access returns
Once Windows starts reliably, open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Restart when Windows requests it, then test the action that previously produced the error. Updates are a reasonable step for a recurring stop-screen problem, but they are not a universal interpretation of 0x0094C249.
5. Use recovery options when the failure persists
If Safe Mode and hardware checks do not restore normal startup, use the Windows recovery environment. System Restore can return system files and settings to an earlier restore point without treating the hexadecimal string as a diagnosis. Other recovery choices may be available depending on the installation and backup state. Read each option’s warning about personal files and applications before confirming it, and keep a current backup whenever Windows can still start.

A device with a yellow exclamation mark is a hardware-identification problem, driver problem, or device-status problem—not proof that the unrecognized code caused it. Select the device, open Properties, and capture the Status text and any separate code listed there.

- Identify the exact device category and model.
- Check whether the device was added, moved, or updated shortly before the warning.
- Use the device manufacturer’s official driver update or reinstall instructions for that model and Windows edition.
- Restart Windows and verify that the warning disappears and the original function works.
- If the warning remains, report the model, status text, Windows build, and driver version to the manufacturer rather than installing an unrelated package found through a generic code search.
Do not remove registry entries or disable security features to make a yellow icon disappear. The status message and device identity are the evidence needed to choose a safe driver action.

Investigate a Windows Update message
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and locate the failed update. Copy the update’s name or knowledge-base identifier, the complete failure text, and the date. Compare that information with Microsoft’s documented Windows Update error-code list. That catalogue contains documented update codes and causes, but it does not list 0x0094C249.
Because the value is not mapped there, do not apply a generic Windows Update repair based only on the number. Determine whether the dialog came from Windows Update itself, an update assistant, a vendor updater, or another installer. The originating component may have its own code. If the history entry gives a different, documented code, use that code and its associated Microsoft procedure instead of substituting 0x0094C249.
Handle an error from one third-party application
When the message appears only after launching one program or performing one operation inside it, the application is the leading source to investigate. Microsoft explicitly notes that third-party services and applications can generate their own error codes.
- Record the application name, version, edition, and the exact action that triggers the dialog.
- Copy the complete message, including file names, buttons, and any text before or after the hexadecimal value.
- Check whether the program has a built-in update, repair, or log location documented by its publisher.
- Use the publisher’s support channel and provide the captured message, Windows edition/build, and the output from the lookup command.
- Test whether the issue follows a specific account, file, device, or project only if the publisher’s instructions call for that test; avoid deleting user data as an experiment.
Reinstalling Windows for a single-application dialog is disproportionate unless the application publisher or Microsoft support identifies a wider system fault. A reinstall can remove applications and settings while leaving the application’s own defect unresolved.
Risk-ordered troubleshooting: what to avoid
- Do not guess from the hexadecimal pattern. Similar-looking codes are not interchangeable.
- Do not delete registry values. No evidence here maps this value to a registry key, and an arbitrary deletion can create a new startup or application problem.
- Do not install an unverified “cleaner” because a page promises a fixed meaning. The code has no confirmed general Windows mapping.
- Do not replace every driver at once. Identify the device and its status first so a change can be reversed and its effect understood.
- Do not suppress a stop-screen restart before recording its text. The stop information may be needed to identify the failing component.
- Do not treat a successful Safe Mode boot as a permanent repair. It only shows that the limited startup environment behaves differently.
Diagnostic lookup, context capture, Safe Mode, and identifying the affected component are lower-risk than registry changes or a Windows reinstall. Escalate only after preserving the evidence that distinguishes those choices.
When and how to escalate
Contact Microsoft Support for a Windows-level failure, or the relevant application or device publisher for a component-specific failure, when the code returns after the appropriate branch has been followed. Include:
- The complete screenshot or copied message.
- The application, service, installer, Device Manager device, or Windows component that displayed it.
- Windows edition, version, and build.
- The action that triggered the error and whether it is reproducible.
- Recent hardware, driver, update, or software changes.
- The output from Microsoft Error Lookup Tool,
certutil -error 0x0094C249, orerr.exe 0x0094C249. - For a device issue, the model, Device Manager Status text, and current driver version.
- For Windows Update, the update-history entry and its date.
This evidence lets support determine whether the value belongs to Windows, a device, an update workflow, or a third-party program. Without it, a proposed “fix” is speculation.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can attempt to fix more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL problems; it can also clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows vulnerabilities, offer a real-time boost, file shredder, and app-crash log, and adjust settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days followed by a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
