How to Fix Error 0x009477A4 on Windows 11 and Windows 10

Error 0x009477A4 is not identified in Microsoft’s published lists of standard Windows, Win32, HRESULT, NTSTATUS, or Device Manager codes. The hexadecimal value alone cannot tell you which driver, program, device, or security problem is involved. Treat it as an application- or vendor-defined code until you capture the complete message and where it appeared.

The reliable fix is to identify the originating component first, decode the value when possible, update only that component from an official source, and escalate with complete diagnostics if the code remains unlisted. Do not buy hardware, install random drivers, or assume malware from this number alone.

What error 0x009477A4 means

Windows error values are not all drawn from one universal catalog. Some come from Win32 or NTSTATUS, some from Device Manager, and many are private values generated by an application, an OEM utility, an installer, or a device driver. Microsoft’s Device Manager documentation warns that its published list does not contain every code generated by Device Manager and directs users with an unlisted code to the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support.

Because 0x009477A4 does not appear in Microsoft’s standard Windows references, there is no evidence-based way to assign it a particular cause from the digits alone. The code might be displayed by a setup program, a vendor utility, a driver, or an application that happens to use its own hexadecimal numbering. The same text can therefore require completely different fixes depending on the window that showed it.

What the number does not prove

  • It does not identify a specific graphics, audio, Wi-Fi, USB, storage, or chipset driver.
  • It does not prove that RAM, an SSD, a cable, or another hardware part has failed.
  • It does not establish that a computer is infected or that the message is malicious.
  • It does not provide a reliable basis for purchasing replacement hardware or a driver-management product.
  • It does not have a published frequency, success rate, or universal one-click repair.

Capture the complete context before changing anything

Write down the full message exactly as shown before closing the dialog. Include punctuation, any file name, the button or operation that triggered it, and whether the message appeared during startup, sign-in, installation, printing, gaming, networking, or another task. A hexadecimal value without its surrounding text is often insufficient for support staff to identify the source.

  1. Record the location. Note the application name, installer, Settings page, Device Manager entry, Event Viewer entry, or vendor utility that displayed the code.
  2. Record timing. Write the date and time, whether the message appears every time or only once, and what happened immediately beforehand.
  3. Record recent changes. List Windows updates, application updates, driver installations, newly connected devices, firmware changes, or configuration changes made shortly before the first occurrence.
  4. Preserve identifying details. For a device, copy its name and hardware category. For software, copy the product name and version shown in its About or support screen. For Windows, record whether the system is Windows 10 or Windows 11 and its edition and build.
  5. Take a screenshot if allowed. Keep the screenshot with your notes, but redact account names, license keys, network addresses, and other private information before sharing it publicly.

Do not repeatedly uninstall components or reset settings while the source is unknown. Each unrecorded change removes evidence that could help the vendor reproduce the problem.

Use the place where the code appeared to choose the next step

Where you saw 0x009477A4 What to identify Most appropriate next action
Device Manager The device category, device name, and Device status text Read the device properties, then use an official Windows or manufacturer driver source.
An application or game Application name, version, operation, and its own log Use the application’s repair, update, or support process; the value may be application-defined.
Windows Setup or an installer The package being installed and setup log location Retry with the same package only after recording the full message; contact that software or hardware vendor if it persists.
Event Viewer Provider name, event ID, level, timestamp, and message text Use the provider name to identify the component that generated the event.
An OEM or vendor utility Utility name, device model, and utility version Check the device maker’s support page and supply the complete message to its support team.

This classification prevents a generic Windows repair from being presented as a code-specific cure. If the source is not known, continue gathering context rather than selecting a driver at random.

Check Device Manager when a device is involved

If the message appears beside a device, Microsoft’s documented procedure is the most direct way to associate the code with hardware.

  1. Open Device Manager. You can search for it from the Windows taskbar.
  2. Expand the device category that contains the affected item, such as Network adapters, Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or another category shown on your computer.
  3. Double-click the device name.
  4. Open the General tab and read the Device status box. Copy the complete text, not only the hexadecimal value.
  5. Open the Details tab only when support asks for an identifier. Choose the property requested by the vendor and copy its value accurately.

A device name in Device Manager is more actionable than 0x009477A4 by itself. If Device status names a different code or gives no code at all, use that status text as the primary diagnostic evidence and keep the original message in your notes.

Do not guess the driver from the category

A category such as Display adapters narrows the search but does not prove that the display driver caused an unrelated application message. Update a driver only when Device Manager, the complete error, or reproducible symptoms point to that device. Avoid packages offered by unaffiliated download sites; an incorrect driver can create a second problem while leaving the original one unresolved.

Try Microsoft Error Lookup

Microsoft documents an Error Lookup utility that can display message text associated with hexadecimal status codes. The documented command is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Err_6.4.5.exe <error code>

The Microsoft Download Center identifies this utility as version 6.4.5 and states that it does not require elevation. Run it in a Command Prompt from the folder containing the executable, replacing the placeholder with the value you recorded. For example:

Err_6.4.5.exe 0x009477A4

How to interpret the result

  • If the utility returns a message, compare that text with the complete dialog, device status, or event entry. A matching description can reveal which component’s status family is involved.
  • If it returns no message, treat that as an unlisted lookup result, not as proof that the code is harmless, malicious, or meaningless.
  • If the returned wording names a component that does not match what you saw, preserve both results and report the mismatch to the component’s vendor.
  • Keep the utility version and the exact command in your support notes. Lookup databases can change, so the output is a point-in-time reference rather than a diagnosis.

Do not edit the executable, download repackaged copies, or run commands supplied by an anonymous forum merely because they claim to decode the value. Use the Microsoft-distributed utility and record what it reports.

Update only the relevant software or driver

Once the source is identified, obtain an update from Windows Update or from the maker of the affected device or application. Microsoft’s stop-error troubleshooting guidance uses Windows Update’s Optional updates area when a driver issue is suspected.

  1. Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
  2. Check for ordinary updates first and install the updates appropriate for your edition and build.
  3. Open Advanced options, then Optional updates when that section is available.
  4. Expand driver updates and select only the driver that matches the device identified in Device Manager or the vendor message.
  5. Install it, restart when Windows requests a restart, and repeat the original action that produced the error.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 expose similar update functions, but labels and placement can differ by build. If Optional updates is absent, use the device maker’s official support page and search by the exact model, hardware identifier, Windows edition, and architecture. For an application-defined message, update or repair the application through its own supported channel instead of substituting a hardware driver.

Confirm that an update actually applies

After restarting, verify the installed driver or application version in its Properties, About, or support screen. Compare it with the recommended version shown by the official source. A successful installation does not prove that it caused the original error to disappear; reproduce the same action and note whether the message returns, changes, or is replaced by a different status.

Use Event Viewer to identify a provider

When the dialog closes too quickly or appears during startup, Event Viewer may retain a corresponding entry.

  1. Search Windows for Event Viewer and open it.
  2. Review Windows Logs, especially Application and System, around the recorded time.
  3. Open entries marked Error or Warning whose timestamp matches the popup.
  4. Copy the Provider, Event ID, level, and complete message. Save the entry details rather than relying on the hexadecimal value alone.

The provider name can distinguish a Windows component from a third-party application or device utility. An event that merely repeats the code without naming a provider is still useful when supplied with the original screenshot and timing.

Handle recurring and one-time appearances differently

When it appeared once

A single message after an interrupted setup, temporary device connection, or transient application operation does not establish a persistent fault. Keep the captured details, restart if the originating software requests it, and test the same operation once. If it does not recur, retain the notes in case a later update produces the same symptom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When it appears every time

Reproducibility is valuable evidence. Record the shortest sequence that triggers the message, such as opening one program, connecting one device, or selecting one setup option. Test only the relevant official update or repair at a time so you can tell which change affected the result. If the same sequence still fails, include the sequence and timestamps in a support request.

When it began after a hardware change

Record the exact device model, connection type, firmware or driver package, and the date it was added. Disconnecting hardware can help establish whether the message is tied to that device, but do not repeatedly unplug storage or other equipment while it is in use. If the code remains after the device is safely removed and the original software still fails, the software may be the source rather than the hardware.

Escalate an unlisted code with a complete evidence package

Microsoft advises taking codes that are not in its Device Manager list to the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support. A useful support request is specific enough that another person can reproduce and classify the event.

  • Full error text and an uncropped screenshot with private information removed.
  • The exact location: Device Manager, application, setup, Event Viewer, or vendor utility.
  • Device name and model, or application name and version.
  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition, build, and system architecture.
  • Date and time of the occurrence, frequency, and the shortest reproducible sequence.
  • Recent updates, driver changes, new hardware, or configuration changes.
  • Device status text or Event Viewer provider and event ID, when available.
  • The output of Err_6.4.5.exe 0x009477A4, including the utility version and whether it returned a message.
  • What official update or repair you tried and what changed afterward.

Send hardware-related cases to the hardware or device maker first when its utility or Device Manager identifies the component. Send application-defined messages to the application maker. Microsoft Support is appropriate when Windows itself is the identified source or when the hardware vendor cannot classify the code.

Common wrong turns to avoid

  • Searching only the hexadecimal value. Search results can associate an unrelated program with the same-looking number. Always include the complete message and source location when asking for help.
  • Installing a random driver. A driver from an unofficial site may be incompatible, unsigned, or for a different model. Use Windows Update or the device maker’s official page.
  • Replacing hardware immediately. The value alone does not establish a failing RAM module, SSD, USB adapter, or cable. Wait for a named component and a reproducible symptom.
  • Running broad registry cleaners or command bundles. Unrelated changes can erase evidence and introduce new failures. Start with identification and the relevant official update.
  • Assuming a virus. The hexadecimal format is not a malware verdict. Use your existing security software for a separate security assessment if you have independent signs of compromise, but do not infer infection from this code.
  • Repeating an installation without recording results. Note the package version, restart status, and exact outcome after each controlled attempt.

When a clean Windows reinstall is not justified

A reinstall is a disruptive operating-system operation and is not a code-specific remedy here. Because 0x009477A4 is not identified as a standard Windows code, reinstalling before determining the originating application or device can remove useful logs while leaving a vendor component unchanged. Consider major recovery actions only after the responsible vendor or Microsoft Support identifies an operating-system fault and you have backed up data and documented recovery requirements.

Decision checklist

  1. Have you captured the complete text, source window, timestamp, and triggering action?
  2. Can you name the application, setup package, Event Viewer provider, or Device Manager device?
  3. Did Microsoft Error Lookup 6.4.5 return a message for 0x009477A4?
  4. If a driver is implicated, did you use Windows Update Optional updates or the device maker’s official support page?
  5. Did you test the same reproducible action after restarting?
  6. If the code remains unlisted, did you send the complete evidence package to the appropriate vendor or Microsoft Support?

If any answer is no, complete that diagnostic step before purchasing hardware or applying unrelated system-cleanup procedures.
