What error 0x00947312 means
A hexadecimal value by itself is not enough to identify a Windows component, driver, application, or security problem. Microsoft’s authoritative Windows pages do not define 0x00947312 as a known Windows 10 or Windows 11 error. That means any page claiming that this number always means one specific damaged file, virus, registry key, or device would be going beyond the available evidence.

Windows can display status values in several places: a blue-screen or black-screen restart, Device Manager, an installer, a browser dialog, or a third-party application. The same-looking number can require a different investigation depending on that location. A message shown beside a device in Device Manager is handled differently from a popup generated by one application, and neither automatically explains a repeated system restart.

Record the complete context before changing anything
Write down the information below while the message is visible. If the alert disappears, take a photograph or screenshot and transcribe it exactly, including punctuation and any additional hexadecimal or decimal values.
- Where it appeared: identify a blue screen, black screen, Device Manager, Windows installer, browser popup, game, or another application.
- Complete message: capture every line, not only
0x00947312. Include a symbolic name, file name, driver name, stop-code label, or suggested action if one is shown. - Application or device: record the program title, installer name, or the exact device category and model shown in Device Manager.
- Timing: note the date and time, what you were doing, and whether the problem happened once or after every launch, connection, or restart.
- Recent changes: list hardware, drivers, Windows changes, applications, or peripheral connections added immediately before the first occurrence.
- Behavior: note whether Windows restarts, freezes, loses a device, refuses an installation, or continues working after dismissing the message.
This record prevents a common mistake: treating an isolated number as if it were a complete diagnosis. It also gives a hardware vendor, application publisher, or Microsoft Support the information needed to match the value to the correct component.
Use Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool to identify the value
Microsoft documents the Error Lookup Tool for displaying the message text associated with a hexadecimal status code or another code. Use it before trying unrelated fixes.

- Obtain the Microsoft Error Lookup Tool from Microsoft’s official documentation or distribution source. Use the Microsoft-provided copy rather than an executable from an unrelated download site.
- Open Command Prompt. If the tool is in a different folder, change to that folder first or provide the full path to the executable.
- Run the command
Err_6.4.5.exe 0x00947312. - Read and save the returned symbolic name and message text. Copy the output into your troubleshooting notes with the date and the original location of the alert.
- If the prefixed form returns no useful result, run
Err_6.4.5.exe 00947312without0x. Preserve both outputs, including an indication that no message was returned if that is what the tool reports. - Compare the returned text with the complete on-screen message. A lookup result is useful only when it matches the event you observed; do not assume a generic-looking result identifies the failing program.
The tool maps a code to message text; it does not by itself repair the underlying condition. If the output names a device, driver, application, or operation, use that clue to select the corresponding workflow below. If it provides no meaningful match, continue to use the original context and escalate with the complete record rather than guessing.

The table separates actions by evidence, not by a presumed meaning for the number. The appearance of 0x00947312 does not establish a unique root cause.
If the message is in Device Manager
Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10. Start with the exact device entry rather than attempting system-wide changes.

- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category that contains the affected device. The category and device name are important evidence, so write them down.
- Right-click the device, choose Properties, and open the General tab. Record the full Device status text and any code shown there.
- Follow the resolution Microsoft gives for that reported Device Manager code. If the guidance calls for a driver update, use the device’s driver-update command and record what Windows reports.
- Restart only after recording the original status. Then return to the same Properties page and check whether the status text has changed.
Updating the driver is a recommended step in Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance, but the correct driver belongs to the specific device and Windows edition. Do not substitute a random driver because its name resembles the device. If the code is not covered in Microsoft’s list, Microsoft advises referring the case to the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support. Give them the model, the full status message, the lookup output, and the steps already attempted.
When Device Manager reports a device that was just added
A newly connected device is a useful timing clue. Disconnect the hardware only if doing so is safe for your work, then restart and observe whether the original behavior returns. Keep the device, connection type, and time of removal in your notes. This does not prove the device is defective; it narrows the investigation to the new hardware, its driver, or the software that installed with it.
If the code appears with crashes or repeated restarts
Microsoft’s general stop-code guidance treats an unexpected restart as potentially related to hardware, a driver, or software. The number alone cannot distinguish among those causes.

- Think back to the first occurrence and remove hardware added immediately before the restarts. Disconnect only equipment you can safely remove, and keep the details of what was disconnected.
- Start Windows in Safe Mode. Safe Mode loads a limited environment so you can continue investigating without the full set of normal drivers and startup software.
- Observe whether the restart or crash occurs in Safe Mode. Record the result and the exact steps that trigger the problem. A change in behavior is evidence about the environment, not a final diagnosis.
- While in Safe Mode, review the hardware and driver changes that preceded the first crash. If a device or driver was newly added, use the relevant Device Manager entry and the vendor’s documented guidance.
- Restart normally and test one change at a time. Do not remove several unrelated drivers or devices simultaneously, because you will lose the ability to tell which change affected the result.
If Windows cannot remain running long enough to complete these steps, stop repeatedly forcing restarts and preserve the stop-screen wording, dump or event details available to you, and the list of recent changes. A support technician can use that record to determine whether the next test should target hardware, a driver, or software.

A popup generated during an installation or inside one application does not establish that Windows itself is damaged. Keep the application name, version if displayed, complete dialog text, and the action that triggered it.

- Close the dialog only after recording its text or taking a screenshot.
- Run the Error Lookup Tool with the value in both prefixed and unprefixed forms and save the output.
- Repeat the operation once, if doing so is safe, and note whether the same value appears at the same point. Record whether another operation in the same application works.
- Use the application’s documented support channel with the complete message, lookup result, operating-system edition, and event time. Include any file or driver name shown in the dialog.
A browser page can display text that resembles a Windows status code. Identify the page or web application first; do not treat a web popup as proof that the computer has a Windows component failure or malware.
How to tell whether it is a virus
There is no authoritative evidence tying 0x00947312 specifically to malware. The value is not defined in Microsoft’s published Windows references, and its presence alone cannot establish an infection. The responsible conclusion is that the code is unidentified until its complete message and source are known.
If the number appears in a browser popup, the page itself may be generating the wording. If it appears in Device Manager, the relevant evidence is the device status and driver. If it accompanies a stop screen, the relevant evidence is the restart behavior and the hardware, driver, and software timeline. These distinctions are more useful than judging the number by its appearance.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Searching only the number: a bare hexadecimal value omits the message and location needed to identify the component.
- Assuming every result is a Windows error: applications and web pages can display their own codes.
- Changing several things at once: simultaneous driver, hardware, and software changes make the outcome impossible to interpret.
- Installing an unrelated driver: Device Manager troubleshooting should stay tied to the named device and its vendor.
- Editing the registry or deleting system files first: no evidence links those actions to this unidentified value, and they can make later diagnosis harder.
- Ignoring timing: hardware or software added immediately before the first crash is a useful clue and should be documented.
- Failing to save the original text: once a popup disappears or a restart overwrites the screen, important diagnostic details may be lost.
A practical decision checklist
Use this sequence whenever the number returns:
- Capture the complete message, location, application or device, time, and recent changes.
- Run

When to escalate
Escalate when the value is not listed, Windows cannot start normally, the same restart continues after Safe Mode testing, or a device remains unusable after following its documented resolution. Include the Windows edition (Windows 10 or Windows 11), complete message, lookup output, device or application name, event time, recent changes, and every step that changed the behavior. This information is more actionable than the hexadecimal value alone.
