What the code does not establish
- It is not verified as a Windows Update error.
- It is not verified as a driver error, even if it appears when a device is connected.
- It is not evidence by itself that Windows system files are corrupted.
- It does not prove malware, a failing disk, or any other specific cause.
Capture the failure before changing anything
Reproduce the problem once, if doing so is safe, and record the context. A vendor can often identify an otherwise undocumented value when it is accompanied by the surrounding details.
- Copy the complete dialog. Transcribe every line, including the application name, file path, secondary code, button labels, and any text above or below
0x0093DB5E. Take a screenshot as well. Keep the leading0x, every zero, and every hexadecimal character; a single transcription error can produce a different value. - Record the trigger. Note what you were doing—launching an app, opening a file, printing, connecting a USB device, signing in, installing an update, or waking the computer—and whether the failure is repeatable.
- Write down the system context. Record whether the machine runs Windows 10 or Windows 11, its edition and build (press
Win+R, enterwinver, and select OK), the affected user account, and the local date and time. - Preserve logs. Do not clear Event Viewer logs or uninstall the suspected program yet. Export relevant events or save screenshots so the original timestamp, source, and event ID remain available.
Check the value with Microsoft Error Lookup Tool
Microsoft documents the Error Lookup Tool as a utility that displays the message text associated with a hexadecimal status code. The Microsoft download page lists version 6.4.5, published July 15, 2024, with a 2.2 MB download. Its requirements include Windows 8.1 and later releases, which covers supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations.
Run the utility
- Download the official Microsoft Error Lookup Tool 6.4.5 from Microsoft’s download page and note where
Err_6.4.5.exeis saved. - Open Command Prompt. You do not normally need administrator rights merely to query a code; use an elevated prompt only if Windows asks for it.
- Change to the folder containing the executable. For example, if it is in your Downloads folder, enter a command such as
cd "%USERPROFILE%Downloads". - Run
Err_6.4.5.exe 0x0093DB5E. Enter the value exactly as shown in the dialog. - Save the displayed message or capture the “no match” response with the date and tool version.
Interpret the result
A matching message gives you a standardized description to compare with the application or device that displayed the dialog. It still does not identify every underlying cause, so keep the event-log context. A blank result or “no match” means the value is not present in the tool’s compiled tables. That is a meaningful finding: it suggests an application-specific, device-specific, copied, or unpublished internal value. It is not proof that Windows itself is damaged, and repeatedly running the lookup will not repair anything.

Identify the component that emitted the code
The next objective is to connect the timestamp and message to a named executable, service, driver, or device. Use more than one Windows view when possible.
Event Viewer: Application and System logs
- Press
Win+R, entereventvwr.msc, and select OK. - In the left pane, open Windows Logs > Application. Sort by date and time, then inspect events within a few minutes of the error.
- Repeat under Windows Logs > System. System events can identify a service, device, driver, disk, or power transition that the application dialog does not name.
- Open an event and record its Level, Source, Event ID, Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and the text in the General and Details tabs.
- Use Save Selected Events to create an
.evtxcopy before making changes. Remove personal data before sending a log to a third party.
An event whose source names the same executable or service as the dialog is stronger evidence than a generic warning at the same time. An unrelated event occurring hours earlier should not be treated as the cause.
Reliability Monitor: a timeline view
Reliability Monitor can make a recurring crash easier to correlate. Press Win+R, enter perfmon /rel, and select OK. In the calendar, choose the day marked with a red error, open the application or Windows failure, and compare its time, executable, and faulting module with your captured dialog. If the same program fails repeatedly after a specific update, that pattern supports an application rollback or clean reinstall rather than a blanket Windows repair.

Check the process or device named in the message
If the dialog names an .exe, note its full path and publisher in Task Manager or the file’s Properties dialog. If it names a device, adapter, printer, graphics card, audio interface, Bluetooth device, Wi-Fi adapter, or USB controller, open Device Manager and match the hardware name and driver provider. Do not assume that a similarly named device is responsible until the timestamp and logs agree.
Choose the repair branch that matches the evidence
Use the branch below only after identifying the component. The same hexadecimal value can require different actions on different machines.
If one application fails
- Check the application’s own help, release notes, and support instructions for the exact message and your Windows version.
- Install the application’s current update from its official publisher. Avoid replacing files with downloads from unverified “DLL” or driver sites.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application’s three-dot menu, choose Advanced options when available, and try Repair. Windows 10 uses a similar path under Settings > Apps > Apps & features. These controls are not provided for every program.
- If Repair does not help and the vendor documents it, use Reset or the installer’s Repair/Modify option. Reset can remove local settings or cached data, so back up configuration and user files first.
- For a clean reinstall, preserve crash logs and license information, uninstall through the vendor’s documented method, restart, and install a fresh package. Re-test before restoring optional plug-ins or extensions.
If a driver or peripheral is implicated
- Identify the exact hardware model and current driver provider, version, and date in Device Manager: right-click the device, choose Properties, then open the Driver tab.
- Obtain the driver from the hardware maker or computer manufacturer, matching Windows 10 or Windows 11 and the correct architecture. Do not use a driver-download aggregator.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when the button is available, or follow the manufacturer’s rollback instructions.
- If the package is damaged, choose Uninstall device, select removal of the driver package only when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it, restart, and install the verified package. In Device Manager, use Action > Scan for hardware changes if the device does not reappear.
- For a USB, Bluetooth, printer, or external adapter, test a different port or cable only after recording the original state. If the failure follows the device to another computer, contact its manufacturer with the model, firmware, driver version, and captured logs.
If a Windows service or component is named
Use the service name and event source to locate Microsoft’s documentation for that component. Check Settings > Windows Update > Update history for a change at the same time. If the failure started after a documented update and the affected vendor provides a rollback path, preserve logs first and use that path. Do not delete registry keys, replace system DLLs, or disable security services because an unidentified hexadecimal value appears.

If the error appears only after startup
A third-party startup item may be loading the failing executable. Save your evidence, then test a clean boot: press Win+R, enter msconfig, open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, disable the remaining non-Microsoft services, and review the Startup tab through Task Manager. Restart and test once. Re-enable items in small groups to identify the trigger, then return Windows to Normal startup. Never disable Microsoft services indiscriminately, and record each change so you can reverse it.
Use SFC and DISM only when Windows corruption is supported by the evidence
sfc and DISM repair Windows components; they are not general-purpose decoders for an unknown application code. Use them when Event Viewer identifies a Windows component, multiple built-in Windows features fail, or the symptoms point to component-store corruption. Save your logs and close applications first.
Recommended command sequence
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) by right-clicking Start and selecting the elevated option.
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to complete. It can pause for a while; do not interrupt it merely because the percentage appears unchanged. - After DISM reports completion, run
sfc /scannow. - Restart Windows and reproduce the original action once. Record the exact final messages from both commands.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, follow Microsoft’s documented servicing guidance and inspect the CBS log rather than substituting files downloaded from the web. If both commands complete successfully but the same application-specific code returns, that result points back to the application, driver, device, or service instead of proving that another round of SFC or DISM will help.
Rollback, restore, or isolate a recent change
When the first occurrence follows a specific installation, update, plug-in, driver, or policy change, compare the before-and-after state. Preserve logs, then use the affected vendor’s documented uninstall or rollback process. Windows 10 and 11 may also offer Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates for eligible updates; the available entries depend on the edition and retention period.
If the machine has a restore point from before the change, System Properties > System Protection > System Restore can return system files, drivers, and settings to that point. System Restore does not replace personal-file backups and may remove applications or updates installed afterward. Create or verify a current backup before proceeding, and do not use a restore point merely because the error code looks unfamiliar.
When the code persists
Prepare a useful vendor report
Send the software or hardware vendor one concise report containing the exact dialog text, screenshot, Windows edition and build, application or device version, reproduction steps, timestamp and time zone, whether another user account is affected, the relevant Event Viewer source and event ID, Reliability Monitor details, and the result from Error Lookup Tool 6.4.5. Include exported logs only after removing passwords, tokens, document contents, and other private data. Ask the vendor whether the value is an internal code and request its official update, repair, rollback, or clean-install procedure.

Compare scope before replacing hardware
Test whether the failure affects one Windows user, every user on the computer, one device, or multiple computers. A single-user failure favors a profile or application setting; every-user failure favors a service, driver, or system component; a failure that follows a peripheral favors that peripheral or its firmware. These comparisons are more informative than registry cleaners or one-click repair claims.
Know when to stop
Stop experimenting if the computer shows data loss, repeated disk errors, overheating, unexpected shutdowns, or a boot failure. Back up important files, photograph the messages, and obtain qualified hardware or vendor support. Do not keep uninstalling unrelated software or editing the registry while the emitting component remains unidentified.
