How do I fix error 0x0093BD74 on Windows 11 or Windows 10? Microsoft does not publish a verified definition or code-specific repair for 0x0093BD74. The value may be mistyped, produced by a third-party application, or displayed without the surrounding message that identifies its component. Start by recording the complete error, then choose the repair path that matches where it appears: Windows Update or setup, an individual app, repeated crashes, or a failed boot.

Do not assume that the hexadecimal-looking value proves malware or hardware failure. The same-looking code can require entirely different troubleshooting depending on its screen, trigger and whether Windows can still start.

What error 0x0093BD74 means

At present, Microsoft does not publish an established meaning for 0x0093BD74 for Windows 11 and Windows 10. That means a precise explanation such as “this is a Windows Update error” or “this is a graphics-driver error” would be a guess. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting pages do not assign a component, severity or fix to this exact value.

Three possibilities fit the information available:

  • The number was copied incorrectly. One missing or transposed character is enough to make a different code.
  • A third-party application generated the message. In that case, Windows may only be displaying the app’s failure rather than causing it.
  • The code was shown without the title, text, file name or log entry needed to identify the failing component.

Because the code is unidentified, the safest method is to classify the symptom first and then use the documented Windows workflow for that symptom.

Record the complete message before changing anything

Take a screenshot or write down the entire dialog, including its title, buttons, file or application name and any text before or after 0x0093BD74. Also record:

  • Whether the message appeared in Settings, Windows Update, Windows Setup, an individual application, the sign-in screen or a blue/black stop screen.
  • Whether Windows starts normally after you dismiss it.
  • What happened immediately beforehand: an update, restart, new driver, peripheral, application installation or hardware change.
  • Whether the code returns every time or occurred once.
  • Any relevant Event Viewer entry, including its source, event ID and timestamp.

This information is more useful than the number alone. If you ask for help, include the Windows edition and version, the application name if one is shown, and the exact wording rather than only the hexadecimal code.

Choose the repair path by symptom

Use this classification before running repairs. It prevents applying boot procedures to an application problem or changing drivers when the failure is limited to Windows Update.

Where 0x0093BD74 appears What it suggests Start with
Windows Update, Settings or Windows installation A servicing or setup workflow is involved, but the code itself is not identified. Remove nonessential hardware, check permissions for an installation, run the Windows Update troubleshooter and restart.
Only when one application opens or performs a task The application may be the source; Windows can still be operating normally. Capture the app name and full message, check whether the failure repeats only in that app, and use the app maker’s support process after protecting your data.
Repeated restarts, a stop screen or crashes across programs A driver, update, storage-space or other system change may be involved. Start in Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, check free disk space, install updates and use recovery options if needed.
Windows cannot reach the sign-in screen The priority is boot recovery, not interpreting the code. Use Windows installation media, Startup Repair and the SrtTrail.txt log.
Activation or another isolated Windows dialog The code needs its surrounding message and component name; no code-specific definition is established. Record the complete dialog and identify the exact Windows screen before attempting a targeted repair.

First checks that are safe in every case

Restart once and observe the result

If Windows restarts unexpectedly, Microsoft notes that in most cases the restart resolves the problem and no further action is needed. After the system returns, check whether the code reappears and whether the same action triggers it. A one-time event and a repeatable failure require different levels of intervention.

Disconnect nonessential external hardware

Power down and remove nonessential USB devices, docks, external drives, printers and other peripherals. Leave only the input devices and hardware required to operate the computer. Then repeat the action that produced the message. If the problem disappears, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the change associated with the failure. Do not disconnect a drive that contains data you have not safely saved.

Protect data before recovery work

Copy important documents to another drive or a trusted cloud location while Windows is usable. Recovery procedures are designed to preserve personal files, but a failed disk or an interrupted repair can make access harder. If Windows cannot start, avoid repeatedly forcing power-offs; move to the installation-media procedure below.

If the error appears during Windows Update or installation

Microsoft’s Update Troubleshooter is the documented first-line workflow when an error code occurs while downloading or installing updates. Microsoft describes it this way: “If you get an error code while downloading and installing Windows updates, the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve the problem.” The exact value 0x0093BD74 is not mapped to a specific update, so use the general process rather than searching for a supposed code-specific package.

1. Prepare the installation or update attempt

  1. Remove nonessential external hardware as described above.
  2. If the message appears during an installation, confirm that the account and destination have the permissions required for that installation. Do not change permissions broadly; correct the specific permission problem indicated by the installer.
  3. Microsoft’s installation troubleshooting guidance allows temporarily disabling antivirus as part of the installation troubleshooting process. Do this only for the duration of the controlled installation test, disconnect from unnecessary networks if appropriate, and turn protection back on immediately afterward. If the installer is not the source of the problem, leave antivirus enabled.

2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update, then run the troubleshooter. Microsoft also provides an automated Get Help flow.

On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update, or use the Get Help flow.

Allow the tool to complete its checks and apply the offered corrections. Restart when it finishes, then return to Windows Update and check for updates again. Record any new message rather than assuming that a changed code identifies the original cause.

3. Separate an update failure from an application failure

If Windows Update completes but the code appears only when one program starts, the update workflow did not establish that Windows is the cause. Capture the application’s full message and check the application’s documented repair or support route. Conversely, if the code appears in Settings while checking for updates, continue treating it as a Windows servicing symptom even if a recently installed app made the timing seem related.

If the error appears after a restart, during crashes or on a stop screen

Repeated restarts and stop screens justify a broader system check. The objective is to determine whether Windows can run with a minimal set of drivers and services, then identify a recent driver or update change.

1. Start Windows in Safe Mode

Use the Windows Recovery Environment’s Safe Mode option. Safe Mode loads a reduced set of drivers, so note whether the computer remains stable there and whether the 0x0093BD74 message appears. If the failure stops in Safe Mode, a normal-startup driver or service becomes more likely; if it continues, the cause may be deeper or unrelated to a normal startup component.

2. Inspect Device Manager

In Safe Mode or a stable normal session, open Device Manager and look for devices marked with a warning symbol. Pay particular attention to hardware installed or changed shortly before the first failure. For the implicated device, update the driver if a known compatible update is available. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, roll that driver back instead. Restart and test after each individual change so you know which action affected the result.

3. Check available disk space

Verify that the Windows system drive has adequate free space. Low space can interfere with updates, temporary files and recovery operations. Remove only files you recognize as safe to delete, and preserve personal files and recovery data. If the drive is nearly full, free space before repeating an update or installing a driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Install pending Windows updates

When Windows can remain running, return to Windows Update and install available updates after the troubleshooter has completed. Restart as requested. If the same stop screen returns, note whether it happens before or after sign-in and whether the text identifies a driver or component; that context is more actionable than 0x0093BD74 by itself.

5. Use System Restore or another recovery option

If the crashes began after a driver, application or update change and System Restore is available, restore to a point created before the change. If Restore is unavailable or does not resolve the problem, use the recovery option that matches your backup and Windows Recovery Environment choices. Keep the recorded error text and Event Viewer details for any subsequent support request.

If Windows will not boot

When Windows cannot reach the sign-in screen, do not keep repeating normal startup attempts. Use another computer to create or obtain Windows installation media appropriate to the affected edition, then start the affected PC from that media.

Run Startup Repair from installation media

  1. Boot the affected computer from the Windows installation media.
  2. At the setup screen, choose Repair your computer, not the option that begins a new installation.
  3. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
  4. Allow Startup Repair to finish and restart the computer. Remove the installation media if the firmware asks you to do so.

Startup Repair addresses boot-start problems; it does not prove what 0x0093BD74 means. If the repair reports that it could not fix the computer, record that result and the exact wording.

Review SrtTrail.txt

Microsoft documents the Startup Repair log at %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. From the recovery environment, inspect the file for the reported root cause, tested repairs and referenced drivers or files. Copy the relevant lines before making another change. A file or driver named in the log provides stronger evidence than the unidentified hexadecimal code.

Use Bootrec only when the boot configuration calls for it

Microsoft also documents Bootrec commands for boot-code repair. They are intended for specific boot-code or configuration problems, not as a universal response to every startup message. Use the command sequence Microsoft specifies for your Windows installation and boot mode, and stop if the output identifies a different disk or partition than expected. If you cannot identify the correct installation, preserve the SrtTrail.txt contents and seek qualified assistance rather than experimenting with boot sectors.

How to tell whether this is a Windows error or an app error

No single character in 0x0093BD74 identifies its owner. Use the behavior around the message:

  • Windows component: The code appears in Settings, Windows Update, Windows Setup, the recovery environment or before an application can open, and the same problem affects more than one program.
  • Application component: Windows remains usable, and the message appears only inside one named application or during one app-specific operation. The app name, module name or vendor dialog is more useful than the code.
  • Driver or hardware interaction: The failure began after a device, driver or update change, appears during startup or causes repeated restarts, and Safe Mode changes the behavior.
  • Boot problem: Windows cannot reach sign-in and Startup Repair or SrtTrail.txt reports a startup failure.

These are diagnostic indicators, not proof of a particular cause. If the complete message contradicts the category, follow the message and log evidence.

Windows 10 support status in 2026

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer can continue to run, but update and support expectations in 2026 differ from those for Windows 11. The end-of-support date does not explain 0x0093BD74 and does not make the code safe to ignore; it means that a current fix, update or official assistance path may not be available for every Windows 10 configuration.

When troubleshooting a Windows 10 system, record the exact edition and version. Do not assume that a Windows 11 procedure, driver or update applies identically to Windows 10.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Searching for a guaranteed code-specific download: Microsoft has no verified mapping for 0x0093BD74, so a file or registry edit advertised as its definitive fix is unsubstantiated.
  • Changing several things at once: Updating a driver, removing software and altering recovery settings together makes the result impossible to diagnose. Change one relevant item, restart and test.
  • Leaving antivirus disabled: If it was temporarily disabled for an installation troubleshooting test, turn it back on as soon as the test ends.
  • Using boot commands blindly: Boot-code repair is situation-dependent. Preserve the Startup Repair log and use Microsoft’s documented sequence for the actual boot configuration.
  • Assuming every restart is catastrophic: Microsoft says most unexpected Windows 11 restarts are resolved by the restart itself. Escalate when the restart repeats, produces a stop screen or prevents normal use.
  • Ignoring the full message: The application name, screen location, event source and timestamp can identify the responsible component when the hexadecimal value cannot.

A practical escalation checklist

  1. Capture the complete message and screenshot.
  2. Record where it appears, whether Windows starts, what changed beforehand and whether it repeats.
  3. Remove nonessential external hardware and restart once.
  4. For Windows Update or setup, run the correct troubleshooter for Windows 11 or Windows 10 and restart.
  5. For repeated crashes, test Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, check disk space, install updates and consider System Restore.
  6. For a failed boot, use installation media, Startup Repair and the SrtTrail.txt log.
  7. Use the identified application, driver or boot evidence when contacting Microsoft or the application maker; do not submit only 0x0093BD74.

As an optional shortcut after you have recorded the evidence, Outbyte PC Repair can check and fix more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary and cache cleanup, privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and has a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

What to conclude from 0x0093BD74

The only reliable code-specific conclusion is that Microsoft currently does not document 0x0093BD74. Treat the surrounding screen, full text, log and timing as the evidence. Use the Windows Update troubleshooter for update or setup symptoms, Safe Mode and driver checks for repeated crashes, and Startup Repair with SrtTrail.txt when Windows will not boot. That approach fixes the underlying class of problem without pretending that an unidentified number has a confirmed meaning.
