What error 0x0093B368 means—and what it does not mean
Microsoft’s documented Windows 10 and Windows 11 support material does not assign a component, cause, malware family, registry value, or standard Windows message to 0x0093B368. An exact-code search also produced no authoritative definition. The code may be generated by a particular application, an installer, a setup log, or an internal dialog rather than by Windows itself.

Microsoft describes stop-code failures broadly: “A hardware device, its driver, or software might have caused this error.” That guidance is relevant only when your symptoms actually match a stop, blue-screen, or unexpected-restart problem; it does not identify 0x0093B368 itself.
First, capture the context before changing Windows
Write down the complete message before dismissing it. A code copied without its title, punctuation, or accompanying text can point to the wrong troubleshooting path.
- Record the source. Note whether the value appeared on a blue screen, during startup, at sign-in, in Settings, in Windows Update, during an upgrade, in an installer, or inside a named application. If a window has a title bar or publisher name, copy it exactly.
- Save evidence. Take a screenshot and record the date and time, what you were doing, and whether Windows restarted, froze, or continued normally. Preserve any setup or application log before retrying an operation that could overwrite it.
- Check the Windows build. Press
Windows key + R, enterwinver, and press Enter. Record the edition, version, and OS build shown in the About Windows dialog. - Note recent changes. List hardware added immediately before the problem, driver installations, Windows updates, security software changes, new applications, and major settings changes.
- Check recurrence. Record whether the value appears once, only after a particular action, or at every boot. Also note whether Safe Mode changes the behavior.
If the dialog clearly belongs to an application, search that vendor’s official support documentation using the full message and version. Microsoft does not define this exact value in the material available for this guide, so the program that displayed it may be the only authoritative source.
Choose the troubleshooting branch that matches the symptom

Compare five details before selecting a fix: the location of the message, whether Windows restarts or merely shows a dialog, whether Safe Mode changes it, any recent hardware or driver change, and whether a setup or event log contains a more specific error. Those details are more useful than the hexadecimal value by itself.
If 0x0093B368 accompanies a stop code or unexpected restart
Use this section only when the surrounding behavior is a blue screen, a black screen followed by rebooting, or repeated unexpected restarts. These steps address common hardware, driver, and software triggers; they do not prove that the hexadecimal value is a Microsoft stop code.

1. Remove recently added hardware
Shut down and disconnect hardware installed immediately before the first failure, such as a USB device, expansion card, dock, or external drive. Leave essential keyboard, mouse, display, and network equipment connected. Restart and check whether the symptom returns. If removing one device changes the result, reconnect devices one at a time so the trigger can be isolated.
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If normal startup is unreliable, enter the Windows Recovery Environment by interrupting startup two times; on the next start Windows should display recovery options. You can also reach recovery from Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now when Windows remains usable. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select the Safe Mode option.

If the error disappears in Safe Mode, a third-party startup program, service, driver, or recently installed component becomes more likely. If it occurs in Safe Mode as well, hardware, core Windows files, or a recovery-level problem remains possible.
3. Inspect Device Manager
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand categories and look for a device with a yellow exclamation mark or an unfamiliar device added around the time the failures began. Open its Properties dialog and read the device status and driver details.
- Use Update driver when a known, compatible update is available from the device manufacturer or Windows.
- Use Disable device temporarily when you need to test whether that device is responsible and Windows can operate without it.
- Use Uninstall device when the driver was just installed or corrupted; restart so Windows can redetect it, or reinstall the manufacturer’s supported package.
Do not disable or remove devices at random. Record the original device name and driver version so you can undo the test.

4. Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when requested. If an update repeatedly fails, stop retrying long enough to capture the displayed code and setup logs; use the update branch below instead.

5. Check free disk space
Open Settings > System > Storage and inspect the system drive. Microsoft’s guidance recommends keeping approximately 10% to 15% free space; the page’s publication year is not stated and was accessed in 2026. Low space can prevent updates, paging, and recovery operations. Remove or move files you recognize, empty Recycle Bin, and use Storage settings to review temporary files. Do not delete unfamiliar system folders.
6. Use recovery if the restarts continue
When the problem began after a driver, application, or configuration change, try a restore point from Settings > System > Recovery or from Windows Recovery Environment’s Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Choose a restore point dated before the change and understand that applications and drivers installed afterward may be removed while personal files are normally retained.
If it appears during Windows Update, setup, or an upgrade
1. Disconnect nonessential peripherals
Shut down and unplug nonessential USB devices, printers, scanners, docks, card readers, and external drives. Leave the display, keyboard, mouse, and any hardware required to complete setup. Retry only after recording the exact message and build shown by winver.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter. Apply only the suggested changes you understand, restart, and test once.

3. Check permissions and update components
An update can fail when the account lacks required permissions or when update services and their cached components are damaged. Confirm that you are using an administrator account, temporarily remove policy or security software changes made immediately before the failure, and follow Microsoft’s current procedure for resetting Windows Update components for your Windows version. Because the exact reset commands differ by release, use Microsoft’s instructions for the edition and build recorded with winver rather than copying an unverified script.
4. Preserve setup logs and run SetupDiag
For an upgrade or installation failure, preserve the logs before starting another attempt. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance identifies setuperr.log and related setup logs as useful evidence. The free Microsoft SetupDiag diagnostic tool can analyze those logs and often reports a more specific rule or failure cause than the dialog’s hexadecimal value.
- Copy the setup-log folder to another location so a subsequent attempt cannot overwrite it.
- Record the exact error text, Windows edition, version, build, and the time of the failed attempt.
- Run SetupDiag according to Microsoft’s current instructions for your Windows release.
- Read the generated result and follow the identified driver, compatibility, storage, or permissions remedy only when it matches your hardware and setup phase.
If SetupDiag finds no matching rule, retain the logs and provide them to Microsoft Support. The absence of a match does not establish that 0x0093B368 is a Windows-defined code.
If it appears during Windows activation
- Press
Windows key + R, enterwinver, and record the installed edition, version, and build. - Open Settings > System > Activation in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Activation in Windows 10.
- Run the built-in Activation troubleshooter when it is offered. Complete the prompts without changing the product key unless you have verified that the key belongs to this edition.
- Note the code displayed after troubleshooting. Microsoft advises following the new code if the troubleshooter changes it.
If 0x0093B368 remains, is still absent from Microsoft’s published list, and the dialog is definitely from Windows Activation, contact Microsoft Support with the screenshot, edition, build, and troubleshooting result. If a separate licensing application produced the dialog, contact that vendor instead.
If Windows will not boot
When the system cannot reach sign-in, use the Windows Recovery Environment rather than repeatedly forcing power-offs. From Troubleshoot > Advanced options, select the option that matches the failure:
- Startup Repair for problems preventing normal boot.
- Uninstall Updates when the failure began immediately after a quality or feature update.
- System Restore when a restore point exists from before the change.
- Startup Settings to test Safe Mode and other controlled startup modes.
- Command Prompt only when you have a documented repair procedure for your installation and have backed up accessible data.
Do not treat the RegBack folder as a routine registry rescue. Microsoft Learn notes that automatic RegBack backups stopped beginning with Windows 10 version 1803, so the folder may be empty or unsuitable. Prefer a restore point or the recovery option that corresponds to the observed failure.
If a third-party application displays the code
Close the program only if doing so will not lose unsaved work, then record its name, version, publisher, installation path, and the action that triggered the dialog. Check the publisher’s official support page for the exact text and version. Install application updates from that publisher, repair or reinstall the application using its own supported installer, and review the application’s logs if it provides them.
Do not substitute Windows Update, activation, or blue-screen procedures merely because the code begins with 0x. A third-party program can choose hexadecimal values that have no Windows-wide meaning.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek support
- The computer cannot stay running long enough to back up important files.
- Storage makes unusual noises, disappears intermittently, or reports repeated hardware errors.
- The failure persists in Safe Mode after recent hardware has been removed.
- SetupDiag or application logs identify a component you cannot safely change.
- Activation remains unresolved after the built-in troubleshooter and the code is still undocumented.
Provide support with the complete screenshot, exact wording, winver output, timeline of changes, steps already attempted, and relevant setup, event, or application logs. This information lets the responder distinguish a Windows failure from a vendor-specific dialog instead of guessing from 0x0093B368.
