Error 0x0093AC36 is not listed in Microsoft’s Windows 10 or Windows 11 activation-error catalog. If you saw it in a browser page, a full-screen warning, or a pop-up that supplied a telephone number, treat the message as a probable technical-support scam—not as a normal Windows diagnostic. Do not call, click its “fix” button, download its recommended program, pay, or allow remote access.
If the code appears inside Settings > Activation instead, use Windows’ built-in troubleshooting, record your edition and build, and contact Microsoft through an official support route. An unlisted code should not be “fixed” with a product key, registry change, or an unverified repair download.

First, identify where the code appeared
The location and behavior of the message matter more than the number itself. Microsoft says genuine error messages never include a phone number to call. Fake support warnings commonly imitate Windows branding, lock the browser into a full-screen page, play an alarm, or insist that you call immediately.
| Where you saw 0x0093AC36 | Most likely interpretation | Safe first action |
|---|---|---|
| Browser tab, web page, full-screen overlay, or pop-up with a phone number | Possible technical-support scam; Microsoft does not publish this code in its activation catalog | Do not interact with the page. Close the browser or end its process, then scan the PC. |
| Windows Settings > Activation | An activation problem may be present, but this specific code remains undocumented in Microsoft’s catalog | Run the Activation troubleshooter, record the build with winver, and use official Microsoft support. |
| Windows upgrade or installation screen | A generic installation or upgrade problem; the code does not establish a cause | Remove nonessential external hardware, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and verify permissions. |
Do not assume that a hexadecimal-looking number proves that a message came from Windows. Scam pages frequently invent codes or display real-looking codes without any corresponding Microsoft documentation.

If a browser or pop-up displayed the code
Do not follow the instructions on the page
- Do not call a number shown in the warning. Microsoft’s published guidance says, “Never call a number provided in an error message. Genuine Microsoft error messages never include a phone number to call.”
- Do not click buttons labeled “Fix,” “Remove,” “Renew,” “Activate,” or “Contact support.” They can download software or redirect you to another fraudulent page.
- Do not install a remote-access application, browser extension, “security tool,” or driver offered by the caller or pop-up.
- Do not provide passwords, verification codes, payment details, or permission to control the computer.
- Do not pay a person who claims the code requires an immediate service contract or activation purchase.
Microsoft describes these fake messages as pressure tactics designed to make a user call a support hotline. A loud sound, countdown, locked-looking screen, or demand that you stay on the phone does not make the warning authentic.
Close a normal browser tab
- Try the browser’s own close button or press
Alt+F4. - When asked whether to leave the page, choose the option that closes the tab or window. Do not select a button inside the web page itself.
- Open the browser again without restoring the suspicious session. If the browser offers to restore tabs, decline that option.
End a browser that will not close
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. You can also right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager. - On the Processes tab, select the browser that is displaying the warning.
- Choose End task. This terminates the browser process; unsaved work in other browser windows can be lost.
- Restart Windows, then open the browser without restoring the suspicious page.
If Task Manager is hidden behind the warning, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and choose Task Manager. Ending the browser process is safer than calling the number or downloading a “cleanup” tool offered by the page.
Remove unfamiliar browser additions and update the browser
- Open the browser’s extensions or add-ons manager.
- Remove extensions you do not recognize or that appeared at the same time as the warning. If an extension belongs to a program you trust, check that program before removing it.
- Install the browser’s pending updates using its built-in settings page, then restart it.
- If the warning returns whenever the browser starts, review the browser’s startup-page and notification-permission settings and remove entries you did not deliberately add.
The pop-up may have been a one-time malicious advertisement, a compromised site, or a sign that unwanted software is present. Closing the page does not by itself prove that the computer is clean, so continue with a scan.
Run a full Microsoft Defender scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then Scan options.
- Choose Full scan and select Scan now.
- Allow the scan to finish. Follow Windows Security’s instructions if it identifies unwanted or malicious software, and restart when requested.
Microsoft recommends Microsoft Defender for known support-scam malware. A scan is a containment step; it does not turn an undocumented code into a genuine Windows error or validate a telephone number displayed by a web page.

If you already called, installed software, or granted remote access
Act as though the computer and any information you disclosed may be exposed. Do not continue the conversation with the caller, and do not let the person reconnect.
Remove the requested remote-access or “support” applications
- Write down the names of programs the caller asked you to install, if you remember them.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Sort by installation date, select unfamiliar applications associated with the incident, and choose Uninstall.
- Restart the PC. If an application will not uninstall, do not download another tool from the caller; use Microsoft support or a qualified local technician.
Also remove any browser extension installed during the call and review the browser’s notification permissions. Keep the name of each removed program for your records.
Change passwords from a clean device
Use a different device that you trust, such as a phone or another computer that was not controlled during the incident. Change the password for your primary email first, then for financial, cloud-storage, shopping, social, and work accounts. Enable multifactor authentication where available. Do not reuse the password that was exposed, and do not type new passwords into the possibly compromised PC until you have taken appropriate security steps.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check accounts and payment activity
- Review recent sign-ins and security alerts for your email, Microsoft account, and other important services.
- Sign out unknown sessions and remove unfamiliar recovery addresses, phone numbers, applications, or authentication methods.
- Contact your bank or card issuer immediately if you paid the caller or disclosed payment details. Ask about stopping or disputing unauthorized transactions.
- Watch statements and account notifications for additional activity after the incident.
Report the incident
Microsoft’s support-scam guidance includes a reporting route. Use that route rather than replying to the caller or using contact information supplied by the pop-up. Preserve screenshots, telephone numbers, payment records, and the names of installed programs if you can do so without reopening the malicious page.

If the code appears in Windows Settings > Activation
A message inside Windows Settings deserves a different procedure, but the undocumented status of 0x0093AC36 does not change. Do not buy a key or install a third-party “activation fix” solely because this number appears.
Record the edition and build with winver
- Press
Windows+Rto open the Run dialog. - Enter
winverand pressEnter. - Record whether the system is Windows 10 or Windows 11, the edition shown, and the OS build number.
Keep the exact wording of the activation message and note whether it appears after a hardware change, an upgrade, or a reinstall. These details help official support identify the licensing context.
Run the built-in Activation troubleshooter
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Activation.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot and follow the prompts.
- Restart if Windows requests it, then return to the Activation page and check the status.
Microsoft notes that an activation code can change while troubleshooting is in progress. Record the final code if one appears; do not assume that a changed number confirms that the original 0x0093AC36 was a documented code.

Use official Microsoft support for an unlisted code
Because 0x0093AC36 is absent from Microsoft’s current Windows 10/11 activation-error catalog, the appropriate next step is Microsoft customer support reached through Windows or Microsoft’s official support site. Tell the representative that the code is not in the published catalog and provide the edition, build, activation status, and any recent license or hardware change.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the message appeared during an upgrade or installation
The available Microsoft guidance for general Windows upgrades recommends a few low-risk checks. These steps do not establish that they fix 0x0093AC36; they address common installation conditions when the code appears in that context.
- Disconnect nonessential external hardware such as extra USB drives, printers, docking accessories, and external storage. Leave connected only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and hardware required for the installation.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter from Windows Settings. Apply any recommended correction and restart.
- Check that the account performing the upgrade has the permissions required to install updates and that the device is connected to a reliable power source.
- Retry the upgrade through the normal Windows Update or installation path. If the same message returns, record the exact screen, build, and stage at which it appears.
- Contact Microsoft support with those details instead of downloading an unofficial ISO, key, activator, or “error repair” package.
These generic steps may help an upgrade proceed, but no Microsoft source assigns a specific installation cause or code-specific remedy to 0x0093AC36.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhat this code does not justify
The absence of a catalog entry is important. Do not present the number as a confirmed Windows, activation, DLL, driver, hardware, or malware error. There is no documented basis here for claiming that one particular registry edit, system-file command, driver update, or commercial repair utility fixes it.
Best Value
- Registry edits: Avoid instructions that tell you to delete licensing keys or change random registry values. A wrong edit can create a separate Windows problem.
- SFC or DISM as a code-specific cure: These are general Windows maintenance commands, not an established remedy for this undocumented number. Running them because a caller demanded it does not validate the message.
- Driver updates: A driver update is not supported as a fix for this code unless a separate, clearly identified device problem exists.
- Activation keys and activators: Never purchase a key from a pop-up or install an activator to silence an unverified warning.
- Unverified support services: A company that repeats the code, supplies a phone number, or requests remote control has not thereby shown that the code is genuine.
A practical decision checklist
Choose the browser-scam path when any of these signs are present
- The message is inside a web page or browser window.
- It supplies a telephone number or tells you to call immediately.
- It uses urgency, threats, alarms, countdowns, or claims that Windows is locked.
- It asks you to download a tool, provide remote access, or pay.
Close or end the browser, remove unfamiliar additions, update it, run a full Microsoft Defender scan, and complete the post-compromise steps if you interacted with the page.
Choose the Settings path when all of these are true
- The message is visible in Windows Settings rather than a browser.
- You can open the Activation page normally without a telephone prompt.
- No caller or web page directed you to install software or grant remote access.
Record the build with winver, run Activation troubleshooter, and contact Microsoft for the unlisted code if the status remains unresolved.
Choose the upgrade path when the code appears only during setup
Disconnect nonessential hardware, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, verify permissions, and document the installation stage before contacting Microsoft. Do not infer a cause that Microsoft has not published.

If ordinary Windows problems remain after you have contained the message, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut that can attempt fixes for more than 100 common Windows issues, adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, and provide features such as vulnerability checks and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
