Error 0x0093130A has no verified definition in Microsoft’s published Windows error references. It may be an application- or vendor-specific value, a mistyped code, or an undocumented status returned by a particular component. Treat the surrounding message, the program that displayed it, and the time and action involved as more useful evidence than the hexadecimal string alone.
Capture that context first, then follow the path that matches what happened: recurring restarts, a failed boot, a Windows Update or upgrade failure, or a dialog inside one application. The procedures below start with reversible checks and progress to recovery tools. Windows 10 remains usable after support ended on October 14, 2025, but Microsoft no longer supplies free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for it.

What error 0x0093130A means
Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool is designed to display the text associated with a hexadecimal status code, but the cited Microsoft documentation does not map 0x0093130A to a standard Windows message. There is also no Microsoft source in the available documentation that assigns this value to a specific subsystem. That uncertainty changes the repair strategy: do not assume the code proves a damaged registry, failing hardware, malware, or a Windows Update problem.

The same digits can be emitted by a third-party program, an installer, a device utility, or an internal component that is not publicly documented. A code copied from a screenshot can also lose a digit or gain one. The safest approach is to identify the emitting component before changing system files or the registry.

Record the complete event
- Copy the entire message, including text before and after
0x0093130A. If possible, use the application’s copy button rather than retyping it. - Write down the program, game, installer, device utility, or Windows screen that showed it. Note whether the dialog appeared during startup, sign-in, shutdown, an update, or a specific action.
- Record the date and time, whether the computer restarted or froze, and anything changed immediately beforehand, such as a driver, peripheral, update, or new application.
- For a recurring crash or restart, open Event Viewer by pressing
Win+R, enteringeventvwr.msc, and checking Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application around that time. Save the event’s source, Event ID, and general tab text.
This record lets you match the symptom to the appropriate procedure and gives an application or hardware vendor evidence it can actually investigate.
Choose the repair path that matches the symptom

If the code appears only inside one third-party application and no system symptom exists, stop after collecting the application details. System-wide repairs may not affect that program and can introduce avoidable risk.
Fix recurring restarts or stop-style failures
Microsoft notes that many unexpected Windows 11 restarts resolve after the restart itself. When the same failure returns, use the following sequence. Apply it to Windows 10 as well, while considering that Windows 10 no longer receives free security or technical support after October 14, 2025.
1. Disconnect recent hardware
Shut down and remove a newly installed USB device, dock, expansion card, printer, or other peripheral. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, and essential power connections. Start Windows again. If the failure stops, reconnect devices one at a time and install the current driver or firmware supplied by the device maker.
2. Start in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. From a working desktop, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Select 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. If Windows will not reach the desktop, interrupt startup twice by holding the power button during boot; Windows should enter the recovery environment on the next start, where the same Startup Settings path is available.

If the error does not occur in Safe Mode, a nonessential driver, startup service, or background application is more likely than core Windows files. Do not use Safe Mode as a permanent operating mode; use it to remove a recent change, collect logs, or perform a clean boot.
3. Inspect Device Manager
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand categories related to hardware you recently changed, and look for a yellow warning icon. Open the device’s Properties and read the status on the General tab. Under Driver, note the provider, date, and version. If the issue began after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available; otherwise uninstall the device only if you have a known-good replacement driver and understand that the device may be unavailable until the next restart.

Open Settings > System > Storage and inspect the system drive. Microsoft’s current guidance is to keep about 10% to 15% of the drive free. Remove or move personal files and uninstall applications you no longer need, but do not delete unknown files from C:Windows or the WinSxS folder manually. Restart after making space and test the original action again.
5. Install pending Windows updates
In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart. On Windows 10, the absence of new updates may reflect the end of free support rather than a malfunction.
6. Use System Restore when the timing is clear
Search for Recovery, open Open System Restore, and choose a restore point created before the first occurrence. System Restore changes system files, drivers, and settings but normally leaves personal documents untouched. Review the affected programs list before confirming. If no restore point exists, continue with the other recovery options rather than creating one after the damage has occurred.

What to do when Windows will not boot normally
Use the least invasive recovery option that matches the symptom. Keep a current backup of personal files before uninstalling drivers, resetting update components, or making any configuration change.
Open the Windows Recovery Environment
From the sign-in screen, hold Shift and select Power > Restart. If the PC never reaches that screen, use a Windows installation or recovery USB created for the same architecture and choose Repair your computer. The recovery menu provides Startup Repair, Startup Settings, Command Prompt, Uninstall Updates, and System Restore. Try Startup Repair once, then move to Safe Mode or System Restore if the same failure returns.
Use Event Viewer and clean boot when you can sign in
Event Viewer can show whether a service, driver, or application failed immediately before the restart. For a clean boot, press Win+R, enter msconfig, open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, and choose Disable all. Open Task Manager from the Startup tab, disable nonessential startup entries, and restart. If the error disappears, re-enable items in small groups until the responsible service or application is identified. Restore normal startup in msconfig after testing.
Check drivers and disks
From an elevated Command Prompt, you can schedule a file-system check with chkdsk C: /scan. If Windows reports problems that require an offline repair, it will explain how to schedule the operation for the next restart. Do not power off while a repair is running. For a driver-related boot failure, Safe Mode and Device Manager’s rollback option are safer first choices than deleting driver files manually.
Treat registry edits as advanced recovery
Microsoft’s startup guidance warns that registry-hive changes can cause serious problems. Export the relevant key or create a full backup before editing anything, and make only a documented change tied to the observed failure. A generic registry cleaner is not a diagnosis for an unidentified hexadecimal value. If you cannot explain what a key controls or how to restore it offline, stop and use System Restore or professional support instead.

If 0x0093130A appears during Windows Update or an upgrade
The code itself is not established as a Windows Update code. The following steps repair common update mechanisms and should be used because the timing points to an update, not because the hexadecimal value identifies one.
Prepare and run the troubleshooter
- Back up personal files to another drive or a trusted cloud destination.
- Disconnect external drives, docks, printers, and other hardware that is not required for the update.
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters in Windows 10. Run Windows Update and apply its recommended repair.
- Check Settings > Time & language > Date & time (Windows 11) or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time (Windows 10). Turn on automatic time and time-zone selection, then select Sync now where available.
Clear the Windows Update download cache
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvcOpen File Explorer and rename C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old. Renaming preserves the old folder if troubleshooting needs to inspect it. Return to the elevated terminal and restart the services:
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauservRestart Windows and check for updates again. If a service refuses to stop or start, record the exact message instead of repeatedly forcing it; that message is more useful for the next diagnosis.

In an elevated terminal, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannowAllow it to reach 100 percent. If it reports that files could not be repaired, run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair, restart, and run System File Checker again:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthThese commands address Windows component integrity. They do not identify an application that independently chose the value 0x0093130A.
Use clean boot and driver checks for upgrade conflicts
Perform the clean-boot procedure described above, then retry the update. Check Device Manager and the hardware maker’s support page for current third-party drivers, especially for storage, graphics, networking, and chipset devices. Avoid installing drivers from download aggregators or using an unverified package simply because the update failed.
Reset only when the evidence supports it
If the update still fails, record the Windows Update history, the exact failure time, and Event Viewer entries before resetting additional components. A feature upgrade may require more free storage or removal of incompatible software. A full reset or clean installation erases applications and can erase files, so it is a last resort after backup and after the emitting program has been identified.

Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool displays the message text associated with a hexadecimal status code. The documented command is:
Err_6.4.5.exe <error code>Run it with the exact value, including the 0x prefix when the tool’s instructions call for it. If the utility returns no message or an unknown value for 0x0093130A, treat that result as evidence that the code is not mapped in the tool’s standard database. It does not prove malware, a defective component, or a successful repair. Preserve the output with the application name and event-log details for the relevant vendor.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not interpret an unknown lookup result as proof that the computer is infected or that hardware has failed.
- Do not delete registry keys, driver packages, or files in system folders merely because their names look unfamiliar.
- Do not repeatedly interrupt a disk repair or power off during an update.
- Do not install a replacement part, generic driver package, or unrelated cleanup utility without evidence tying it to the symptom.
- Do not reset or reinstall Windows before backing up personal files and recording the original message.
- Do not assume that a Windows 10 update failure can be solved by waiting for a new free security update; Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025.
When to escalate
Escalate to the application or device vendor when the complete message names that product, when the Error Lookup Tool cannot identify the value, or when the problem survives Safe Mode and System Restore. Include the exact code, full text, application or device model, Windows edition and build, timestamp, Event Viewer source and Event ID, recent changes, and the steps already attempted. If the PC contains irreplaceable data or cannot stay powered on, stop troubleshooting and use a qualified repair service before further resets or disk operations.
