Error 0x0092E38F does not have a documented, universal meaning in current Microsoft references. It is not identified as a standard Windows Update, Windows Setup, Device Manager, or general Win32 error. The correct fix depends on the program or Windows component that displayed it. Treat the hexadecimal string as a clue, not a diagnosis.
Before changing drivers, editing the registry, replacing hardware, or purchasing repair software, capture the dialog title, complete message, application or component name, Windows edition and build, and a screenshot. Then follow the troubleshooting branch that matches where the code appeared.

What error 0x0092E38F means
Microsoft’s current documentation does not define 0x0092E38F as a standard Windows error. That means a universal “fix” would be speculation. The same hexadecimal text can be displayed by unrelated software components, including a Windows service, an installer, a device driver, a game, or a third-party application.
The value is also listed in a non-Microsoft color reference as a COLORREF value. That possibility matters if the string was copied from a graphics, design, or application log: it may be an application-specific number rather than a failure code. A color-reference listing does not prove that Windows is damaged and does not identify a repair.

Look for the surrounding words. “Windows Update,” “installation failed,” a device name, an application name, an Event Viewer source, or a blue-screen stop-code name provides more diagnostic information than the hexadecimal value by itself.
Record the source before trying a fix
Write down the following while the message is still visible:
- The exact application, service, installer, or Windows page showing the message.
- The dialog title and every line of the full message, including any second code.
- The date and time, what you were doing immediately beforehand, and whether the problem repeats.
- Your Windows edition and build. Press
Windows key + R, enterwinver, and press Enter. - A screenshot that includes the title bar and the complete text.
- Any affected device name, update number, setup phase, Event Viewer source, or crash stop-code name.
Do not rely on a cropped screenshot containing only 0x0092E38F. If the message disappears, check the relevant log after recording the time. In Event Viewer, open Windows Logs, select Application or System, and inspect entries at that time. Select an entry and use Copy to preserve its General and Details text.

Choose the troubleshooting path

If none of these descriptions matches, preserve the context and use the lookup procedure below rather than applying an unrelated repair.
If 0x0092E38F appeared in Windows Update
Windows 11
- Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
- Search for the Windows Update troubleshooter and start the automated troubleshooter.
- Allow it to check update components and apply the changes it recommends.
- Restart the computer, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
- Record the update name and any new companion code if the same message returns.
The Get Help workflow can change as Microsoft updates Windows 11. If its result identifies a specific component, follow that result instead of repeatedly running the same scan.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply the suggested changes, restart Windows, then return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Open View update history and note which update failed. Keep that entry with your screenshot if escalation is needed.
Do not infer that the hexadecimal value identifies Windows Update merely because it was visible near an update message. If the troubleshooter reports no issue, the originating application or service may be elsewhere; capture the complete dialog and investigate that component.

If it appeared while upgrading or installing Windows
A setup error needs the setup phase and any companion code. “Copying files,” “installing features,” “installing updates,” and “finishing up” point to different failure areas, so record the exact wording before retrying.

- Unplug nonessential hardware: USB flash drives, printers, scanners, speakers, external disks, hubs, and similar accessories. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and hardware required to boot.
- Disconnect storage devices that are not involved in the installation, taking care not to remove the drive containing the installer or existing Windows installation.
- Restart the upgrade or installation and watch for the phase where it fails.
- If it fails again, preserve the complete message, companion code, phase, and any setup log entry before making another change.
Repeatedly retrying without recording the phase can erase useful evidence. A rollback that returns you to the previous Windows version should be reported with the exact point of rollback and the associated code, not just 0x0092E38F.
If Device Manager displayed the code
Device Manager’s status text identifies the affected hardware and is more useful than an isolated hexadecimal string.

- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the warning icon.
- Right-click the device, choose Properties, and read the complete text under the General tab in Device status.
- Record the device name, manufacturer, hardware identifiers if shown, and the status text.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version. Do not remove a working driver before you have a recovery plan.
- Obtain the current driver from the hardware maker for your exact model and Windows edition, then install it according to that maker’s instructions.
- Restart Windows and check Device Manager again. If the status text changes, record the new text rather than assuming the hexadecimal value was the diagnosis.
Microsoft states: “If you are getting an error code that isn’t listed here, you can contact the hardware device vendor’s technical support or Microsoft Support.” Use that escalation route when the status code is not covered by Microsoft’s list or the manufacturer’s instructions do not resolve it.

An application can display a value that Windows itself does not recognize. Start with the application name and version, not with system-wide repairs.
- Close the application and restart Windows once.
- Check whether the application shows the message only when opening a particular file, account, level, or feature. That distinction helps the publisher reproduce the problem.
- Install updates offered by the application’s publisher or store, using the publisher’s documented process.
- Review the application’s own logs or crash-report screen. Preserve the timestamp, module name, and any second error value.
- Check Event Viewer around the same time under Windows Logs > Application. Copy the event’s General and Details information.
- Temporarily remove a recently added plug-in, overlay, mod, or peripheral only if the application publisher identifies it as a possible conflict. Restore it if it is unrelated.
- Contact the application’s publisher with the screenshot, exact version, Windows build, reproduction steps, and log entry.
Do not replace system DLL files or download DLLs from unofficial sites because an application dialog contains this code. Those actions can introduce a second problem and do not establish what the original value means.
If the code accompanied crashes or unexpected restarts
For a blue screen or restart, the stop-code name and the sequence of events are more valuable than 0x0092E38F. Note the stop-code name, whether Windows created a dump, and any hardware or software added immediately before the failures began.
Try Safe Mode to separate startup software
- Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10.
- Under advanced startup, select Restart now.
- After the recovery menu appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- At the numbered list, choose Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking only when network access is necessary for the diagnostic step.
- Observe whether the crash or restart occurs in Safe Mode. If it does not, recently installed startup software, a service, or a driver becomes more likely; if it does, hardware or a lower-level Windows problem remains possible.
Remove newly added hardware and undo the most recent driver or software change one at a time, restarting between changes. Keep a written record so you can reverse a change that makes the situation worse. If Windows cannot remain running long enough to collect evidence, use another computer or a vendor support channel to preserve the stop-code details.
Look up the raw value only after preserving context
Microsoft Learn recommends searching for the raw text or error code. Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool displays the message text associated with a hexadecimal status code. If the value came from a Windows API or an Event Viewer entry, run the tool from a command prompt using the exact code:

An unrecognized result can mean the value belongs to third-party software, is application-specific, or is not a status code supported by the tool. Keep the original dialog and log entry because the lookup output does not replace that context.
Escalate with a complete evidence package
Contact the organization responsible for the component that displayed the message. Send one concise package containing:
- The screenshot and verbatim message.
- Application, service, device, or setup-phase name.
- Windows edition, build, and whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit when relevant.
- Date, time, and precise steps that reproduce the issue.
- Update history, Device status text, Event Viewer entry, setup details, or crash stop-code name, as applicable.
- Recent changes such as a driver, peripheral, application update, or Windows upgrade.
- What you already tried and the exact result of each step.
For a Windows Update or Windows Setup issue, Microsoft Support is the appropriate escalation point. For a Device Manager issue, contact the hardware maker or Microsoft Support. For an app or game issue, contact that application’s publisher. This division prevents a vendor from having to rediscover which component generated the value.
