Error 0x0092A617 does not have an identified standard meaning in Microsoft’s published Windows 10 or Windows 11 error references. It may be generated by an application, installer, device driver, activation component, or another vendor program. Treating it automatically as a Windows activation error, a Device Manager code, or proof of a damaged system can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.
Start by recording exactly where the hexadecimal value appears, then use Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool and follow the workflow for that context. The steps below cover application crashes, startup failures, activation screens, Device Manager entries, and recurring restarts without assuming that the code is a native Windows status.

What error 0x0092A617 means
Microsoft’s general system-error guidance says that system error codes can occur in many locations and require investigation of the programmatic and runtime context. Microsoft also notes that system error values can be returned by non-system software. In practical terms, the same-looking hexadecimal string can be meaningful to a particular application or hardware vendor without being a documented Windows kernel, activation, or Device Manager code.
Authoritative Microsoft references do not identify 0x0092A617 as a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 Win32 error, activation code, stop code, or Device Manager code. That does not prove that the message is fake or harmless; it means the screen, application, device, and event that produced it are essential evidence. There is no published prevalence figure for this value, either.

Do not delete registry entries, replace hardware, or reset Windows merely because the number looks technical. First establish the source and whether the problem is repeatable.
Capture the source before changing anything
Write down the complete event while it is visible. A cropped number without its surrounding text often removes the clue that identifies the responsible program.
- Copy the entire message, including the title, buttons, file name, and any text before or after
0x0092A617. - Record the application, installer, game, device, or Windows screen showing the message.
- Note whether it appeared during startup, sign-in, installation, activation, printing, networking, a driver change, or a crash.
- Record what changed immediately beforehand, such as a Windows update, new hardware, driver installation, application update, or security-policy change.
- Save a screenshot and, if available, the related Event Viewer entry or application log. Include the event date and time so separate failures are not mixed together.
- Check whether the code appears every time or only once. A one-time installer message and a restart loop require different decisions.
If the message names a vendor or product, keep that name with the hexadecimal value. A vendor’s support team may recognize its own code even when Microsoft’s database does not.

Use Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool
Microsoft documents the Error Lookup Tool as a way to display the message text associated with a hexadecimal status code or another code. Its documented command format is:
Err_6.4.5.exe <error code>
- Obtain the Microsoft-signed Error Lookup Tool from Microsoft’s official documentation or support channel. Verify that the downloaded executable is digitally signed by Microsoft before running it.
- Open Command Prompt and change to the folder containing the executable, or provide the full path to it.
- Enter the value exactly as displayed, including the
0xprefix:Err_6.4.5.exe 0x0092A617. - Save the returned message text, header, and source name with your screenshot. If the tool names a component, use that component’s documentation or support workflow rather than a generic Windows repair.
- If the tool returns no useful entry, do not infer that Windows is corrupted. Microsoft describes the database as point-in-time, and vendor-specific values may not be included.
The lookup result is a clue, not a guarantee that the code originated in Windows. Compare it with the screen and application that produced the value. A mismatch is a reason to investigate the originating software, not to force the result into an unrelated Windows category.

Choose the workflow that matches where the code appears
| Where you see the code | What it may indicate | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Inside an application or installer | An application or vendor-defined status | Capture the complete message, check the application’s log, and use the vendor’s documented repair or support route. |
| During startup, a freeze, crash, or unexpected restart | A driver, recently added hardware, update, or broader Windows recovery problem | Use the Windows crash sequence: remove recent hardware, test Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, update or remove the suspect device, install updates, and use recovery options if needed. |
| On the Windows activation page | An activation workflow issue or a code produced by another component | Run winver, use the Activation troubleshooter, and follow any new documented code it produces. |
| Beside a device in Device Manager | A device or driver condition; Microsoft’s list is not exhaustive | Identify the device, inspect its status, and update or reinstall the manufacturer’s driver. |
Reproduce the issue after each major change. If the behavior changes in Safe Mode, after disconnecting hardware, or after removing a driver, record that result; it narrows the cause even when the hexadecimal value itself remains undocumented.
Fix a recurring crash, freeze, or restart
For a Windows 10 or Windows 11 crash or restart that repeatedly displays the code, use the following order. It follows Microsoft’s recommended sequence while keeping each change reversible where possible.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Disconnect recently added hardware
Shut down the computer and remove newly installed USB devices, expansion cards, docks, storage devices, or other hardware that was added shortly before the failures began. Leave essential input devices connected. Start Windows again and check whether the same event returns. If removing one device stops the problem, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the trigger and then obtain the manufacturer’s current driver or firmware instructions.
2. Test Windows in Safe Mode
From Windows, open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10. Under Advanced startup, choose Restart now. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose Safe Mode. If Windows cannot reach Settings, interrupt startup as directed by Microsoft’s recovery interface until Windows Recovery Environment appears, then use the same Startup Settings path.
Try the operation that normally triggers the code. If it works in Safe Mode, a nonessential driver, startup program, or service is more likely involved. Do not assume Safe Mode has repaired anything; use the difference to guide the next inspection.

3. Inspect Device Manager for warning icons
Right-click Start and choose Device Manager. Expand the categories related to the failure, such as Display adapters for a graphics crash, Network adapters for connectivity, or Universal Serial Bus controllers for a USB event. A yellow warning icon identifies a device Windows has flagged. Open the device’s Properties page and read the status text and device name before changing it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Update, disable, or uninstall the suspect device
In the device’s Driver tab, use Update Driver when a current driver is available from the hardware manufacturer. If the problem began immediately after a driver change and the option is available, use Roll Back Driver. For a device that is causing repeated crashes, temporarily choose Disable device and restart to test the result. Uninstall the device only when you have a reliable way to reinstall its official driver and understand that the hardware may stop working until Windows detects it again.
After a driver change, restart and repeat the action that produced the code. Keep the original device name, driver version, and date in your notes so you can restore the previous state or report the change to support.
5. Check available disk space
Windows needs working space for updates, temporary files, crash data, and recovery operations. Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10 and review the system drive. Remove or move files only after confirming that they are personal data you no longer need locally. Do not delete unknown folders merely because they are large. Restart after making sufficient space and test again.
6. Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10. Select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when prompted. If the code began directly after an update, record the update name and date before considering rollback or System Restore; do not remove updates indiscriminately.

7. Use System Restore or another recovery option
If the crash continues after hardware and driver checks, open Windows Recovery Environment through Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now on Windows 11, or the equivalent Windows 10 Recovery path. Under Troubleshoot > Advanced options, choose System Restore when a restore point from before the failure exists. Read the affected-program list, keep a current backup of personal files, and allow the process to finish without powering off the computer.
If no suitable restore point exists, use the recovery option that matches your backup and installation situation. A reset or reinstall is a last resort because it can remove applications and settings; preserve personal files and installation media or account details first.

Activation errors have a separate workflow. Do not assume that 0x0092A617 is itself a documented activation code simply because it appeared near an activation message.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
winver, and press Enter. Record the Windows edition and version shown in the About Windows dialog. - Open the activation page: Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10.
- Run the Activation troubleshooter when it is offered. Follow its prompts and record any different error code or message it returns.
- Search Microsoft’s documentation for the resulting activation code, not just the original hexadecimal value. Apply the remedy that matches the installed edition and licensing situation.
- If the resulting activation code is not listed in Microsoft’s documentation, contact Microsoft support with the edition from
winver, the complete message, and the time of the failure.
Changing product keys or reinstalling Windows before recording the new code can destroy useful diagnostic context. Keep the original screenshot and the troubleshooter result together.

When the code appears beside a device in Device Manager
Microsoft explicitly states that its Device Manager error list does not include every possible error. Therefore, an unlisted hexadecimal value beside a device is not evidence that Device Manager is malfunctioning.
Best Value
- Open Device Manager from the Start context menu and identify the exact device category, manufacturer, and model.
- Open Properties and read the device status on the General tab. Note any separate numeric code, warning text, or resource conflict.
- Check the manufacturer’s support instructions for the exact model and your Windows edition. Prefer an official driver supplied for that device.
- Use Update Driver or uninstall and reinstall the official package when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it. Restart after installation.
- If the device still shows the same status, test another port or connection only when that is appropriate for the hardware, and compare behavior with the device disconnected.
- Escalate to the hardware manufacturer or Microsoft with the model, Windows edition, driver version, Device Manager status text, and the complete 0x0092A617 message.
Avoid installing an unrelated driver because its description looks similar. A wrong graphics, storage, network, or chipset driver can create additional failures and make the original evidence harder to interpret.
If an application or installer shows the code
An application-generated code is owned first by the software that displayed it. Close and reopen the program only after saving work, then reproduce the event while noting the exact operation. Check the application’s own log or crash-report screen and the Windows event entry captured at the same time.
Use the application vendor’s documented repair, update, reinstall, or support process. If the problem started after an application update, record the previous and current versions and ask the vendor whether 0x0092A617 is one of its internal statuses. Do not substitute a Windows activation fix or a Device Manager driver change unless the application’s evidence points there.
For an installer, verify that the package matches your Windows edition and processor architecture, that the download completed without errors, and that you have enough free space. If the installer produces a different, named error after retrying, follow that new error’s documentation. Keep the original 0x0092A617 text because it may identify a prerequisite or vendor service that the later message does not show.
How to decide whether a change helped
Use a simple test record for each attempt:
- the exact action taken;
- the date and time;
- whether Windows was restarted;
- the operation used to reproduce the issue;
- whether the code, wording, or behavior changed.
Three observations are especially useful. If the event disappears only in Safe Mode, investigate drivers and startup components. If disconnecting recent hardware stops it, work with that device’s manufacturer. If the code changes after the Activation troubleshooter or Error Lookup Tool, use the new named code rather than continuing to treat 0x0092A617 as a universal Windows error.
When to escalate instead of continuing manual repairs
Contact the originating application or hardware vendor when the message is confined to that product, when its logs name a component, or when an official driver and reinstall procedure do not resolve it. Contact Microsoft support for an unlisted activation result, Windows recovery failure, or a repeatable crash that persists through Safe Mode, hardware removal, Device Manager checks, updates, and available recovery options.
Provide support with the complete message, screenshots, Windows edition and version from winver, device or application name, recent changes, Error Lookup Tool output, relevant event-log details, and every step that changed the behavior. This is more actionable than reporting the hexadecimal value alone.

Repairs to avoid
- Do not treat the value as proof that your computer is infected or that the Windows registry must be cleaned.
- Do not use a generic registry cleaner or an unverified driver-updater utility to guess at a cause that has not been identified.
- Do not buy replacement hardware until Device Manager, the vendor’s diagnostics, or reproducible testing implicates that component.
- Do not delete system files or alter activation data based only on an unlisted code.
- Do not repeat a reset or reinstall without backing up personal files and recording the evidence that led to that decision.
