Safe preparation and a quick restart
- Save open work. If Windows is unstable, copy important documents to another drive or cloud storage before attempting recovery operations.

- After Windows starts, perform a clean restart (clean boot) to test whether a non-Microsoft startup service or program is interfering with the update. Open System Configuration by searching for
msconfig, use the Services tab to hide Microsoft services before disabling third-party services, disable startup items through Task Manager when prompted, and restart. Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to hardware you recently added or that stopped working.

Check free disk space and install pending updates
Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage in Windows 10 and verify that the system drive has usable free space. Remove or move personal files only after confirming a backup. Then install available Windows updates and restart.
