Error 0x00927CCB is poorly documented: Microsoft’s indexed Windows 10 and Windows 11 support documentation does not define it or provide a code-specific repair. The safest approach is to identify exactly when it appears, begin with reversible Microsoft troubleshooting, and then move to Safe Mode, driver checks, system-file repair, or recovery only when the problem persists. A third-party page associates the code with settings errors, invalid entries, failed software installation or removal, improper shutdown, or missing system files, but those are possibilities—not a confirmed diagnosis.
What error 0x00927CCB means
There is no confirmed Microsoft definition
Windows error codes normally point to a documented component, but 0x00927CCB does not appear with a Microsoft explanation in the indexed Windows 10 or Windows 11 support material. That means the code by itself cannot tell you whether Windows Update, startup, an application, a driver, activation, or a damaged system component is failing.

A third-party description lists incorrect system settings, invalid system entries, an installation or removal that did not finish cleanly, an improper shutdown, and deleted system files as possible associations. Treat that list as a set of hypotheses. It is not evidence that any one of those conditions exists on your computer, and it does not establish a special registry edit or one-command cure.

Record the event that produces the code
Before changing anything, write down the exact screen, application, and action that precede the message. Take a screenshot if possible and note whether the code appears once or after every restart. The context determines which branch below is appropriate.

| Where the code appears | Start with | Useful clues |
|---|---|---|
| During Windows Update or an upgrade | Disconnect peripherals, restart, install pending updates, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter | Update history, a percentage at which the process stops, or a rollback after reboot |
| Immediately after power-on or sign-in | Safe Mode and Device Manager | A recent driver, hardware change, or repeated restart |
| When opening one application | Repair or reinstall that application and check its recent changes | Whether other applications open normally |
| With a blue screen, freeze, or unexpected restart | Safe Mode, free-space check, and driver inspection | A stop code, dump screen, or device marked with an exclamation point |
| After installing or removing software | Restart, verify the installation state, and use System Restore if the change clearly preceded the failure | Whether the problem began during the same session |
Safe first steps for every occurrence
- Save the context. Record the time, what you were doing, the application or Windows feature involved, and whether the code recurs. Do not rely on the hexadecimal value alone.
- Disconnect nonessential hardware. Shut down if practical, then unplug printers, scanners, speakers, USB flash drives, external hard drives, docks, and other accessories. Undock a laptop where applicable. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection needed for the test. Microsoft’s installation guidance specifically recommends removing such devices because they can interfere with setup or updates.
- Restart normally. A one-time interruption can clear after a clean restart. If the same action produces the code again, continue instead of repeatedly forcing power off.
- Check for pending Windows updates. On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install what is offered, and restart when requested.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. In Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter. Apply a suggested correction, restart, and test the original action.
- Check the Windows Update service when an update is the trigger. Press Win+R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. Locate Windows Update; if it is stopped, use Start, and if it is disabled, change the startup setting to an enabled state before retrying. Microsoft also documents resetting update components for applicable failures; use the procedure for your Windows version rather than copying an unrelated script. - Verify that your account can complete the action. An update or installation may require an administrator account. If Windows reports an access or permission problem, sign in with an account that has administrator rights and retry. Do not lower security controls permanently just to get past an unknown code.
If the code appears during Windows Update or setup
Retry with a minimal hardware configuration
Keep the nonessential devices disconnected while you retry. External storage, printers, scanners, audio devices, and docking hardware can introduce another driver or storage target into setup. Reconnect one device at a time only after the update completes successfully; if the code returns after a particular device is reattached, that device or its driver becomes the leading suspect.
Check update history and available space
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history in Windows 10. Look for the first failed update rather than only the latest retry. Then open Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10) and check the system drive. For recurring stop-code problems, Microsoft gives 10%–15% free space as a useful rule of thumb; it is guidance, not a measured failure threshold and not a guarantee that freeing space will solve this particular code.
When an upgrade rolls back
Leave the computer connected to power, remove external devices again, and retry after restarting. If setup repeatedly rolls back, stop repeating the same attempt and move to Safe Mode or System Restore. Repeated interrupted upgrades can make diagnosis harder, especially when the original trigger was a driver or an incomplete software change.

If Windows crashes, freezes, or restarts
Enter Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services, which helps separate a basic Windows problem from a startup program or device driver. If you can reach the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. In the recovery menu choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. If normal startup is too unstable, Windows may enter the same recovery environment automatically after repeated failed boots.
In Safe Mode, repeat the action that normally triggers 0x00927CCB. If it does not occur there, concentrate on recently installed drivers, startup applications, and hardware. Safe Mode is a diagnostic state; it is not a permanent replacement for normal startup.
Inspect Device Manager
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand the categories and look for a yellow exclamation mark or an entry that appeared after the problem began. Open the device’s Properties to read its status, then choose the least disruptive action that matches the evidence:

- Uninstall device: reserve this for a clearly suspect device and restart so Windows can redetect it. Have a recovery path available before removing a critical device.
Microsoft recommends Device Manager checks for recurring crashes and restarts. The presence of an exclamation mark is a clue, not proof that the device caused this hexadecimal code.

When the message accompanies missing files, damaged components, or repeated application failures, Windows’ built-in integrity tools are reasonable general checks. They are not a code-specific Microsoft procedure, and a clean result does not prove that the underlying cause has been found.
- Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) from the Start menu.
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress pauses temporarily. - After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow. Restart when it finishes, then repeat the action that produced 0x00927CCB.
If either command reports that it could not complete, note the exact message rather than repeatedly running it. A failed integrity check is a reason to use System Restore or another recovery option, especially when Windows is unstable.

If one application or installer triggers the error
Separate an application fault from a Windows fault
Open two or three unrelated applications. If only one program fails, the problem is more likely confined to that program, its files, or a dependency. If every program fails or Windows itself is unstable, follow the startup and recovery branches instead.
Repair an incomplete installation or removal
Restart first, then check whether the program appears in Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10). If the program offers Advanced options > Repair, use Repair before Reset or uninstalling. For a failed installation, remove only the partially installed application through Windows’ normal uninstall path, restart, and obtain a fresh installer from the software publisher. Avoid deleting random folders or DLL files from C:Windows or C:WindowsSystem32.

Choose a restore point dated before the change and read the list of affected programs before confirming.
Best Value
Use System Restore or another recovery option
System Restore
Search for Create a restore point, open the result, and select System Restore. Alternatively, from Windows Recovery Environment choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Select a restore point from before the first occurrence, review the affected applications and drivers, and keep the computer connected to power until the process finishes. System Restore changes system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs while normally leaving personal documents untouched; still, back up important files first when Windows remains usable.
Startup Repair and reset choices
For a computer that cannot boot normally, Windows Recovery Environment may offer Startup Repair. Use it when the symptom is a failed boot rather than an application-only error. If repair options do not restore a usable system, Reset this PC is a later step. Read the choices carefully: Keep my files retains personal files but removes applications and settings, while removing everything erases the Windows installation and user data. Back up documents and confirm that you have installation credentials before choosing a reset.
Choose the least-destructive next step
| Action | Authority | Reversible? | Changes system files? | Backup need | Best match |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart and disconnect devices | Microsoft guidance | Yes | No | Not normally required | One-time failures, setup, or update errors |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Microsoft built-in tool | Usually; review suggested changes | May change update settings | Recommended when updates are already failing | Update and upgrade context |
| Safe Mode and Device Manager | Microsoft built-in tools | Driver changes can be reversed | Driver installation or removal may change files | Recommended before removing a critical driver | Crashes, freezes, restarts, and startup faults |
| DISM and System File Checker | Microsoft built-in commands | Not an instant undo; create a restore point first when possible | Repairs component and system files | Recommended | Suspected Windows-file corruption |
| System Restore | Microsoft recovery feature | Reversible only by another restore operation | Yes | Back up important files | A recent driver, update, or software change |
| Reset this PC | Microsoft recovery feature | No simple undo | Reinstalls Windows and removes applications; data outcome depends on the option | Required | Last-resort recovery when other options fail |
What not to do
- Do not treat the third-party list of possible causes as a confirmed diagnosis.
- Do not download a replacement DLL from an unknown website or delete files from Windows system folders because a message mentions a missing file.
- Do not apply registry-cleaning scripts or random registry edits. There is no published evidence that a registry cleaner repairs 0x00927CCB.
- Do not repeatedly force-shut down a computer during an update or recovery operation.
- Do not assume that a utility, driver change, or restore point will repair every occurrence. The code has no documented universal fix.
When to seek further help
Escalate when the error returns after the update troubleshooter, Safe Mode testing, driver inspection, and an appropriate recovery attempt; when Windows cannot stay running long enough to back up files; when storage is failing or inaccessible; or when the code appears with a different stop code or hardware warning. Keep the screenshot, exact wording, update history, recent hardware and software changes, Device Manager status, free-space amount, and the results of any integrity commands. Those details are more useful to Microsoft or a technician than the hexadecimal code by itself.
