That means there is no single Microsoft-prescribed repair. The code may have been produced by a third-party application, a driver or device workflow, an activation component, an upgrade process, or a misleading message that only resembles a Windows error.
The screen, application, web page, event-log entry, and action that preceded the code determine the correct fix. Record that context first, then follow the matching troubleshooting path below. Do not install software or call a support number solely because a pop-up displays this hexadecimal value.

What error 0x0092783A means
Windows error numbers are not all defined in one universal list. Microsoft notes that system error codes can appear in many parts of the operating system and require investigation in the context where they occur. A hexadecimal value that is absent from the standard Windows 10 and Windows 11 catalogs therefore does not identify a known, universal fault by itself.
There are several realistic possibilities:
- A desktop application generated its own internal code while opening, saving, updating, or connecting to a service.
- A driver or attached device reported a failure through its setup or control software.
- The code appeared during activation, Windows Update, or an operating-system upgrade but is not listed in that workflow’s public code table.
- A browser page, advertisement, or fake support dialog displayed a made-up or mistyped value. A publisher name, phone number, or request for remote access is especially important evidence.
The number alone cannot establish that Windows is damaged, that hardware has failed, or that a computer is infected. Treat it as a clue until its source is identified.

Capture the circumstances before changing anything
Write down the details while the message is still visible. This prevents a generic repair from hiding the evidence needed to identify the actual component.
- Copy the code exactly, including leading zeroes, letters, punctuation, and any accompanying text. Note whether it is written as
0x0092783Aor in another format. - Record where it appeared: a browser tab, a named desktop program, Settings, Device Manager, an activation page, Windows Setup, or a blue or black screen.
- Record the program or publisher name, the full web address if it was in a browser, and any telephone number or request to install remote-control software. Do not call or install anything yet.
- Write down what you did immediately before the message: connected a device, installed a driver, opened a file, applied an update, changed a setting, or resumed an upgrade.
- Check whether Windows restarted, froze, signed you out, or continued normally. A restart pattern separates a system-level failure from an application dialog.
- If the message has disappeared, open Event Viewer by right-clicking Start and choosing Event Viewer. In Windows Logs, inspect Application and System entries at the time of the failure and save the event source, event ID, and description.
Choose the troubleshooting path that matches the location

Manual repair sequence for Windows 11 and Windows 10
1. Restart once and test the original action
Choose Start > Power > Restart, not Shut down followed by a hardware power switch. After signing in, repeat the action that produced the code once. A one-time application or update interruption may not return. If the code immediately recurs, stop repeating the action and continue with the diagnostic steps below.
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers and services. If the code disappears there, a startup program, optional driver, or recently added device becomes a stronger suspect.

- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. If Windows cannot reach Settings, hold Shift while selecting Restart from the sign-in or Start power menu.
- At the recovery screen choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. Use networking only when you need an online update or support page.
- Test the failing action. If it works in Safe Mode, remove or disable the most recently installed driver, startup utility, or device, then restart normally.
Safe Mode is a diagnostic state, not a permanent repair. If the same code appears there, focus on Windows components, storage, the application itself, or the attached hardware rather than startup-only software.
3. Check Device Manager and driver history
Right-click Start and choose Device Manager. Expand categories related to the event, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Bluetooth, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or the device you had just connected.
- Look for a yellow warning icon. Open the device’s Properties and read the General tab and its Device status text.
- On the Driver tab, note the provider, date, and version. If the problem began after an update and Roll Back Driver is available, use it and restart.
- Otherwise choose Update Driver and allow Windows to search, or obtain a driver from the computer or device manufacturer’s official support channel.
- If the device was just installed, shut down, disconnect it, and test again. For an internal component, follow the manufacturer’s removal instructions rather than opening hardware while powered.
Do not force a driver intended for a different model or Windows architecture. If Device Manager shows an unlisted error number, preserve the device name and status text and contact Microsoft Support or the hardware vendor.

4. Confirm sufficient free storage
Updates, temporary installation files, and recovery operations need working space. In Windows 11 open Settings > System > Storage; in Windows 10 open Settings > System > Storage. Review the system drive’s available space and remove only files you recognize. Emptying temporary files is optional; never delete driver packages, personal files, or recovery partitions merely to make a number smaller.

Open Settings > Windows Update in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when prompted. Re-test only after the restart has completed. If the code began immediately after a particular update, record its knowledge-base number before considering an uninstall; removing updates can affect security and should be used only when Windows provides that recovery option.
6. Remove newly added hardware during an upgrade
If 0x0092783A appeared while upgrading Windows, disconnect nonessential USB drives, docks, printers, phones, capture devices, and other peripherals. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection needed for the upgrade. Restart and run the Windows Update troubleshooter:

- Windows 11: Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
- Windows 10: Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
Reconnect devices one at a time after the upgrade succeeds. If setup repeatedly rolls back, note the stage at which it fails and use Windows recovery rather than repeatedly forcing a shutdown.
7. Use the workflow for activation errors
For an activation-screen message, open Settings > System > Activation in Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Activation in Windows 10. Review the edition shown, confirm that the computer is online, and select the available activation troubleshooter. Use the Microsoft account or product-key information associated with that installation.
An unlisted activation code cannot be reliably interpreted from the hexadecimal value alone. Gather the exact wording, Windows edition, and whether the license was transferred or hardware was changed, then contact Microsoft Support through the official Windows support route.
8. Repair an application-specific failure
If only one program displays the code, do not begin by changing system files or the registry. First update that program through its publisher, sign out and back in if it uses an account, and test with a different document or project. Check the program’s own log or help menu for a component name. If the failure started after an extension, plug-in, or update, disable that addition and test again.
Uninstall and reinstall only after recording settings and saved data. Download the installer from the publisher’s verified source, and avoid installers reached through a pop-up that supplied the error number. Send the publisher the exact code, application version, Windows version, and reproducible steps.
9. Investigate restart, freeze, or blue-screen symptoms
When Windows restarts or shows a blue or black screen, record every stop code or message visible before the restart. Use Safe Mode and Device Manager first. Disconnect recently added hardware, check storage space, and install pending Windows updates. If Windows still cannot start, enter the same recovery environment used for Safe Mode and consider Startup Repair or System Restore when a restore point predates the problem. Back up personal files before using Reset this PC; reset options can remove applications and, depending on the choice, personal data.

Use Microsoft’s diagnostic references when the code remains unidentified
Microsoft’s guidance for an unrecognized system code is to investigate the runtime context with Error Lookup, the Debugging Tools, and relevant protocol documentation. Enter the code exactly as displayed and compare any result with the program, driver, or device that produced it. A lookup result that belongs to a different component is not proof that component caused your failure.
Event Viewer can supply the missing context: note the event source, event ID, timestamp, and the action immediately before the error. Keep screenshots and exported event details when contacting support. This evidence is more useful than sending only the hexadecimal number.
When to stop troubleshooting and ask for help
- Contact Microsoft Support for an unlisted activation code, repeated Windows-startup failure, or an operating-system error that remains after Safe Mode, driver, storage, and update checks.
- Contact the hardware vendor for an unlisted Device Manager code, a device that fails on another computer, or a driver supplied only by that vendor.
- Contact the application publisher when one program alone generates the code and Windows otherwise operates normally.
- Use a trusted security or technical-support channel if a browser message demands payment, a phone call, remote access, or an unexpected download. The presence of 0x0092783A does not authenticate that message.
Before handing over the computer, provide the Windows edition and build, the exact code and wording, where it appeared, whether Windows restarted, recent hardware or driver changes, free-space status, update history, and the troubleshooting steps already completed.
